Abstract

Because each student is unique, the diversity in their ways of learning and speed of learning needs to be considered to help them achieve the best process and outcome. As experts propose differentiated instruction as the method for reaching out to the students’ uniqueness, the present article will elaborate the definition, characteristics, and syntax of differentiated learning in English for Foreign Language context, in order to highlight the strength and weakness of differentiated instruction as proven by previous studies. The present study employed George’s (2008) model of library research, in which the information to support the argument of this article were all derived from secondary sources. As the main argument, the present study adopted the concept of differentiated instruction from Tomlinson (2014), supported with research findings about its implementation taken from articles published in reputable international journal and nationally accredited journals. The study revealed that by its definition and characteristics, differentiated instruction could offer strong benefits for EFL students. However, because the model of instruction needs strong commitment from the school and the teachers since it requires the teachers to adopt several strategies and media meet the different learning styles of the students, which in turn, consumes more time and energy. Thus, for EFL classroom to be benefitted by differentiated instructions, the school and the teachers needs to be fully committed to the committed to its concept, syntax, and its requirements.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the types and reasons for Code-switching in the Youtube channel Ini Talkshow on the program Net TV. This study is concerned with the Codeswitching phenomenon involving the Indonesian-English language that was found in Cinta Laura's speech during channel on the program Net TV. The quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this study. Apple and Muysken's theory (1987:118) is referred to in the study of data to analyze the type of Code-switching, and Hoffman's theory (1991) is referred to analyze the reasons for code-switching. It is done formally and informally to show the product of the analysis. There are found intra-sentential 10 data, inter-sentential 2 data, and tag switching 1 data. The reason for Code-switching are found in talking about a particular topic 25%%, quoting somebody else 10%, showing empathy about something 20%, interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connector) 10%, repetition used for clarification 10%, expressing group identity 10%, and intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor 10%.

Abstract

This qualitative research investigates the utilization of cohesive devices in report writing among English Department students. The study delves into the application of grammatical and lexical cohesive devices in the students' report writing that is connected to the students’ ability in promoting the cultural values they have to report. The research employed a comprehensive approach, including the observation on the students’ field study and interview, as well as content analysis to gain deeper contextual insights into language usage and the contribution of authentic activities prior to report writing on environmental and cultural issues. The findings demonstrate the most frequently used devices are "Reference" and "Conjunction" as primary grammatical cohesive devices, while "Ellipsis" and "Substitution" were underutilized. Of all lexical cohesive devices, "Repetition" occurred dominantly, with "Antonyms," "Synonyms," "Hyponyms," and "Meronyms" were less frequently used. In line with the use of cohesive devices in report writing, the study also emphasized how cohesive devices facilitate English department students in conveying cultural values in their report texts through the integration of field study and authentic experiences. By incorporating real-world applications and deeper learning experiences outside the classroom, aligned with the principles of Independent Learning, Independent Campus ‘Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka’ (MBKM) in Indonesia, academic institutions can foster students' language development and competence in report writing.

Abstract

This community service program aims to facilitate the improvement of English skills for military personnel of Radar Unit 212, Indonesian Air Force, in Natuna Regency. This area is in close proximity to the South China Sea, which is still subject to territorial disputes among several Southeast Asian countries. As an international language, English plays a crucial role as a communication bridge for Air Force personnel. By implementing Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), a teaching method focusing on actual interaction such as conversation and discussion, the Air Force personnel can benefit from this English skills improvement program.

Abstract

Translating economic texts is a challenge for translators because they have to understand global economic dynamics and specific terms that are frequently not understood. This study discusses the procedures applied to translate economic terms in an economic text describing Indonesian capital market. The analyzed data were English economic terms from the online media Bloomberg, "S&P 500 Suffers Worst 'Fed Day' Since January 2021: Markets Wrap" as the source text (ST) and their Indonesian translation as the target text (TT). This study aims to describe the application of translation procedures used by the first researcher as a translator, so that the approach of analysis is an annotated translation. The translation results are described and analyzed by considering the application of translation procedures which consist of direct translation consisting of borrowing, calque and literal translation, and oblique translation namely modulation, transposition, equivalence and adaptation. The findings show that through annotated translation, it can be identified that the most predominantly-applied procedure to translate economic terms is calque, which indicates the orientation towards the source language.

Abstract

The field of Translation and Interpreting (T&I) encompasses bilingual activities in transferring messages from a source language to a target language with an assertive cognitive capacity to produce natural and equivalent meaning. This study serves as a preliminary experiment to explore the cognitive capacity development of ESL students in rendering messages within T&I. Mix-method is applied by involving 28 students taking the test of rendering the messages orally and in written. The experiment consists of three stages: a CEFR test, which reveals that the students' highest level is B1 Intermediate; a 12-session T&I course covering theory, strategies, and practice; and an evaluation phase including feedback collected through questionnaires. In general, the T&I process of rendering messages from English (EN) to Indonesian (ID) is deemed naturally acceptable, and the students are able to accomplish the task. However, there are challenges related to working memory, which result in students not achieving excellent test scores. The EN-ID group shows better performance in translating and interpreting, particularly in the higher score ranges, whereas the ID-EN group has a larger number of participants with lower scores. Additionally, delivering messages from Indonesian to English poses challenges, especially in the context of noun phrases. These challenges are primarily attributed to differences in word order, determiners and articles, prepositions, idiomatic expressions, vocabulary, as well as the participants' proficiency level and exposure to both languages.

Abstract

Personification, a literary device that may give inanimate objects or abstract concepts life, has been used in poetry for an extended period of time. This research investigates the interesting realm of personification in a book of poetry in order to elicit more deep feelings, enrich thinking, and establish an intimate connection between the reader and the surroundings in a book of poetry Yesterday I Was The Moon (2017) by Noor Unnahar. In this study, twenty-two poetry titles were found that contain personification. This study uses the theory of figurative language by Kennedy & Gioia (1995). This research uses descriptive qualitative method where data was analysed and presented in discussion with detailed descriptions. The findings emphasize the importance of understanding the concept of self-identity wherein described from the attributes and things that are attached to a person. As well as the value of literature in understanding the characteristics of a poem based on the use of language and how a poem is interpreted with basic and general theories of language art. This study aimed to explore personification as a type of figurative language greater in depth. This investigation contributes to a growing number of studies on figurative language and semantic approaches to literature.

Abstract

This research analyzes idiomatic expressions in Taylor Swift’s song "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)." A qualitative approach focused on content analysis of the song's lyrics. The data were collected by transcribing and analyzing the lyrics to identify and classify idiomatic expressions using Makkai's (1972) theory. The analysis revealed a total of 11idiomatic expressions, categorized into Phrasal Verb Idioms (1 idiom), Tournure Idioms (7 idioms), Irreversible Binomial Idioms (1 idiom), and Phrasal Compound Idioms (3 idioms). Tournure Idioms were the most frequently used, highlighting their prominence in conveying the song's themes. This study contributes to the understanding of idiomatic expressions in song lyrics and their role in enhancing lyrical content.

Abstract

Storynomics tourism is about packaging the beautiful charm of a tourist destination in an interesting story, so that it becomes an attraction for foreign tourists visiting places of interests in Indonesia. Every tourist destination in Indonesia has its own uniqueness and this can be packaged in the form of storynomics tourism which can promote tourism and the creative economy in Indonesia. The training and consultation of designing agritourism attraction programs with storynomics values reported in this paper aimed at preparing tourism programs, i.e. branding for Kampung Kopi Camp (KKC) and Yeh Nu Garden (YNG), two interesting tourist attractions at Batungsel village, Pupuan subdistrict, Tabanan regency, Bali province. Designing storynomics agritourism at Batungsel Village, Tabanan Regency, Bali was realized through several stages, namely (1) compiling tour packages connecting one place to another with the close routes, (2) telling the stories about Robusta coffee roasting and its local wisdom, and (3) developing agritourism high quality fruits at Batungsel village. All of these steps were applied in accordance with the main focus of the Community Empowerment Program designed to develop agritourism at the rural area of Bali.

Abstract

The ubiquitous use of digital technology brings the inevitability of online learning and its varying degree of teacher-student interactions, both in synchronous and asynchronous online learning modes. This present study reviews the strength and weaknesses of the two online learning modes to propose the use of blended online learning as the combination that harvests the strengths of asynchronous and synchronous modes of online learning with the opportunity to cover each other's weaknesses. The recent study employed Aveyard's literature review model as a method for gaining a comprehensive understanding of a specific topic using data and arguments from previous studies. Thirty-six articles published in reputable international journals or accredited national journals published in 2015-2020 were used. This review revealed that blended online learning combines the strengths of synchronous and synchronous learning in terms of authentic learning activities, flexibility, access, interaction, development of critical thinking, comprehension, and mastery, and student-centered nature of the learning. However, it still retains challenges in terms of network and connection issues from both online learning modes. This finding implies that blended learning can be the middle-ground to facilitate online learning with benefits from both synchronous and asynchronous online modes by minimizing the students’ exposure to the weaknesses from the two modes.
