Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the 2013’s movie The Conjuring through Nick Lacey’s Repertoire of Elements and Vladimir Propp’s Narrative Theory. The movie, directed by James Wan, is recognized for its intricate horror narrative and rich character development. By examining the movie’s use of style, iconography, character roles, narrative structure, and setting, this research demonstrated how these elements worked together to create a compelling supernatural experience. Applying Lacey’s theory revealed the movie’s adherence to genre conventions through its dark, atmospheric settings and minimal lighting. Interestingly, the movie did not feature a "false hero", a deviation from Propp's theory, which the movie emphasized the clear moral presented in the story. The absence of this character type suggested a more straightforward narrative focus on the struggle between good and evil, without the complication of betrayal from the protagonist's ranks. In conclusion, The Conjuring Movie's linguistic and visual elements  were integral to the movie's ability to engage and terrify its audience. The camera work, lighting, and sound, combined with a well-defined character structure, created a compelling narrative that resonated with viewers, reinforcing the movie's status in the supernatural horror genre.

Abstract

People can learn human characterization by reading a novel since all characters reflect real-life human characteristics. The study aimed to describe the characterization of Amanda Collier as the female main character in Nicholas Sparks’ The Best of Me (2011). By employing qualitative data analysis from Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, the present study incorporated the data collection, data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing into a simultaneous, interactive process that was conducted repeatedly to build the research’s trustworthiness. It was revealed that as the main character, Amanda Collier was mainly described as a pretty school girl that made her popular at her school. When she grew up, was also described as a beautiful woman. Amanda Collier was rich and had a college education. Amanda Collier had strong curiosity and she was brave and impulsive. Furthermore, she was also described as generous because she made time to volunteer in a hospital to take care of children with cancer. From this study, it is implied that while enjoying the romance, readers of Nicholas Sparks’ The Best of Me can also learn various good characters reflected in Amanda Collier’s characterizations.

Abstract

Translation serves as a bridge to overcome language barriers. This research compares the types of equivalence produced by Google Translate (GT) and DeepL Translate (DT) using Koller`s equivalence framework. Employing a qualitative approach, the study follows data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion verification procedures. The translations generated by GT and DT were analyzed in the context of Kampung Kopi Camp, a tourism website being developed as a bilingual platform. The findings reveal two key classifications: (1) the same type of equivalence, where both GT and DT produce denotative, pragmatic, and text-normative equivalence for certain data, and (2) different types of equivalence, where the two tools generate varying results for the same data. Additionally, GT demonstrates a broader application of equivalence types, with a higher occurrence of pragmatic and connotative equivalence, making its translations more engaging. In contrast, DT adopts a more formal approach. These differences suggest that GT may be more effective in capturing contextual and expressive nuances, while DT maintains a stricter adherence to formal structures. By identifying the characteristics of these translation tools, this study provides insights into their effectiveness in producing equivalent translations, particularly in the tourism field. Understanding these variations can guide users in selecting the most suitable machine translation tool based on their specific needs, whether for formal communication or more engaging, context-driven translation. Ultimately, this research highlights the strengths and limitations of GT and DT, contributing to a broader understanding of machine translation in cross-linguistic communication.

Abstract

Hedges have been attributed as stereotypical women’s language, marking them as indirect, doubtful, and sensitive communicators. This study traces the effort to deconstruct this gendered use of hedges in conversational texts included in the ninth grade Junior High School EFL textbook. Following the model of interactive qualitative data analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) with Coates's perspective on women and language, the study reveals that the book has shown deconstructive efforts in the stereotypical use of hedges as women’s language by assigning male characters uttered hedges in the conversational texts. However, this effort is weakened by the significantly higer frequency hedges used by female characters as compared to those by male characters. Besides, the assigning of masculine topics for male speakers and feminine topics for semale speaker cast ambivalence in this effort. These results call for more persistent and concious efforts to include more consistent deconstructions of gendered language in future English textbooks.

Abstract

As role models, teachers hold great potential to influence their student's literacy. The present study explored Indonesian teachers' reading habits and literacy practices. In this qualitative descriptive study, 75 EFL teachers from different provinces in Indonesia enrolled in the Kelas Kreatif Indonesia English Club and became respondents to the survey. The study employed questionnaires and interviews to collect data. The study revealed that regarding the frequency of reading, 36 teachers did not allocate exact time for reading, while 39 and 9 teachers allocated one and two hours a week, respectively. The teachers read a combination of material: online or printed textbooks/modules/articles, online/printed newspapers and magazines, and literary texts such as online/printed novels, short stories, and poems. They mostly read for professional and pleasure purposes, and a small number of teachers reads for test preparation. The teachers affect their students' literacy by promoting their students' reading habits by integrating various tasks that require reading and writing with opportunities for students to retell and share their reading results and writing products in open discussions. The teachers fostered the students' awareness of reading by giving reading tasks, sharing and discussing the reading experience, establishing literacy groups, forming reading corners, using the text or result of reading as learning resources, and posting the reading activities on social media. This study shows that teachers are potential influencers on the environment. Thus, further research should be conducted on the influence of reading habits on teachers' literacy performance on a larger scale.

Abstract

Figurative language is an important device in literature, specifically in trying to enrich meaning and emotional on creative expression, and especially in song lyrics. While its presence in popular music is widely known, a detailed and comprehensive analysis focused on the density, variety, and interplay of the ten figurative language types within a single song has not been commonly explored. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyse the density and variety, as well as the functions of ten figurative language types classified by Knickerbocker and Reninger, within the song lyrics of JT Music’s “Nightmares Never End.” This study also looks into lexical density, and how richness in vocabulary correlates to figurative language’s density. With a qualitative content analysis approach, the lyrics were analysed and categorised accordingly. The analysis successfully analysed ten types of the figurative language, resulting in a total of 27 instances found in the lyrics. This density and varied types show the song’s richness in linguistic artistry and metaphorical meanings, contributing to its theme of psychological issues, struggles, and loneliness. These findings highlight the intricate use of figurative language, showing the interplay between the types that enhance the song’s thematic depth expressed through the words used.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the values of character education in the main character in the novel for children entitled Billy and The Minpins. This study uses a qualitative interpretive method, in which close reading and note-taking are used to collect data from the plot structure in the story. The research procedure involves a repeated, simultaneous process of data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The subject of this research is a novel, and the values of character education are the object of this research. The five core values of character education, as outlined by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia, were employed in this study. The findings of this study reveal that the characterization of Little Billy represents the five core values of character education: religious, nationalist, independence, cooperation, and integrity. These results suggest that children’s literature can offer examples of character education values for children, underscoring the potential of literary works as supplementary educational resources.
