Abstract

Intake of good nutrition plays an important role in achieving optimal body growth. Optimal body growth also includes brain development, which determines someone's intelligence. A factor that is most visible in the community is the lack of a mother’s knowledge about the nutritional intake required for children during their growth period. The research design used in this study is simple experiments. The research was conducted from May to September 2011 in the work areas of Nanggalo Health Center, Padang. The population in this research includes all toddlers in the work areas of Nanggalo Health Center, Padang. The sample size is 60 toddlers, where 30 toddlers received multivitamin therapy, and 30 others received honey therapy for 30 days. After performing the Friedman test, both groups showed the same significance level (P < 0.05), which means there was no significant difference between group 1 and group 2. To determine which group had the most significant effect, a Wilcoxon test was conducted. The conclusion of this research indicates that the therapeutic effect of multivitamins is better than honey therapy combined with vitamin B complex on hemoglobin levels, albumin levels, and nutritional status (w/U) in toddlers in the work areas of Nanggalo Health Center, Padang, in 2011. It is recommended for health workers to provide counseling to the community to encourage the use of multivitamins for toddlers to supplement their nutritional needs for growth and development. Multivitamins are readily available and affordable for the public.

Abstract

The low adherence of pregnant women in consuming Fe tablets is regarded to be the main cause of the ineffectiveness of the Fe supplementation program held by the government to overcome anemia issues on pregnancy. One of the factors that influence the adherence of pregnant women is family support. This research was aimed at finding out the relationship between family support and the adherence in consuming Fe tablets among pregnant women in Puskesmas Nanggalo Kecamatan Nanggalo, Padang, West Sumatra in 2010. This research was designed in a correlation study with a cross-sectional approach and 32 respondents. Respondents were those who had got Fe tablets in their last visit from Puskesmas and also had a health history with anemia in pregnancy. The data was collected by using a questionnaire. Univariate and bivariate analyses were done to variable family support as well as the adherence of pregnant women. Bivariate analysis was done by cross-tabulation with a Chi-Square test. The result of the research showed that 54.9% of respondents got low family support and 71.9% of respondents had low adherence in consuming Fe tablets. From the statistics experiment, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between family support and women's adherence in consuming Fe tablets (p < 0.05). Therefore, it is suggested that nurses or other health workers in order to start asking and taking the family members, especially for husbands, to join treatment toward pregnant women with anemia.
