Abstract

This Community Service program aims to introduce the language and culture of Japanese society to students at SMP Islam Al Maarif 02 Singosari. Foreign language education has not been widely implemented in junior high schools. In formal education, foreign languages such as Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin, and German are introduced at the junior high school level in the early semesters through a system where students choose based on their interests. This is what prompted the Community Service team from the Japanese Language Education Program to engage directly with middle school students, with the goal of introducing them to the language and culture of Japanese society. This way, when the students targeted by this Community Service initiative enter the secondary education level, they will already be familiar with the Japanese language and culture, and it is hoped that they will choose Japanese as one of their foreign language subjects to study. In other words, this Community Service program serves as a promotional platform for the Japanese Language Education Program under the Department of Language Education at FIB UB. The Community Service activity was conducted on August 5, 2022, at the meeting room of SMP Islam Al Maarif 02 Singosari. The forms of this Community Service activity were: 1) Introducing basic Japanese language, 2) Making Japanese cuisine such as Sushi and Onigiri, and introducing the daily life of schoolchildren in Japan.

The activity was attended by participants who were targeted, namely village officials, artists and youth organizations. The activity produced positive results, shown by the presence of participants exceeding the target number, where the target number was 25 people, but approximately 30 people attended. Based on the questionnaire distributed, it can be stated that most of the participants who attended had skills regarding digital technology, but were still not optimal, so these three activities were provided so that village communities with full awareness and independence promote and publish the potential of their local culture to a wide audience through the use of digitalization.

Abstract

This study is to determine whether illustrated children's book can effectively address the issue of young learners' lack of interest in reading. Learning to read entails comprehending the written symbols that oral language sounds represent. Using a picture book is one of several ways that may be used to teach reading to young learners.  Three illustrated children's books influenced by Japanese culture are included in this periodical. The findings of this study demonstrate that, with the active assistance of their parents, picture books can enhance and encourage young learners to favor reading. Picture books teach kids to understand stories that require conversation and aid in their visualization of literacy.

Abstract

Abstract Teacher competency development in Indonesia is a gradual and progressive task that is intended to increase teachers’ professionalism. In accordance with Permenpan RB Number 16 of 2009 concerning Teacher Functional Positions and Credit Points, Junior Superintendent IIIa who wishes to advance to First Class Junior Superintendent IIIb must obtain 3 points for self-development and teachers who wish to advance from First Class Junior Superintendent IIIb to Superintendent IIIc must obtain 4 points for professional development from scientific publications or innovative works. The writing of scholarly articles by teachers is fostered by Law Number 18 of 2007, which has made it a requirement, one of the parameters used to evaluate in-service teacher certification portfolio, and one of the forms of activity or professional development work that is highly respected. Regrettably, teachers encounter some obstacles in producing and publishing scholarly articles so errors are regularly made while submitting manuscripts to the predatory journal.
