Abstract

The growing interest in mindfulness-based education highlights the need for approaches that integrate cultural and spiritual traditions to support students’ holistic development. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a Buddhist meditation retreat combined with mindful living education in enhancing mindfulness and compassion among students in Palembang City, Indonesia. Using a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control groups, the research selected 120 students from a population of 170 through the Slovin formula. Participants were divided into experimental and control groups across junior and senior high schools. The experimental group attended a structured retreat that combined traditional Buddhist practices, such as mindful breathing, insight meditation, and loving-kindness meditation, with mindful living activities inspired by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings, including cultivating awareness in daily routines, deep listening, and compassionate communication. Data were collected using researcher-developed questionnaires. Results showed that the experimental group experienced significant improvements in mindfulness and compassion, whereas the control group displayed minimal changes. Baseline equivalence was established, and post-test comparisons consistently favored the experimental group. These findings suggest that culturally grounded mindfulness programs can foster emotional awareness and prosocial behavior in youth. Practically, the study encourages educational institutions to adopt mindfulness interventions and recommends further research with broader populations, validated instruments, and long-term evaluation.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the competency development process of administrative staff at MTs Negeri 1 Jombang and its implications for improving the quality of educational services. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, this research involved in-depth interviews with madrasah principals, administrative staff, and educators, as well as participatory observation and documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted interactively using the Miles and Huberman model. The research findings indicate that administrative staff competency development is implemented structurally through four competency standards: personality, social, technical, and managerial. Development strategies include routine training programs, competency-based performance evaluations, continuous supervision, and implementation of digital service systems through One-Stop Integrated Services (PTSP). Despite challenges, particularly technology literacy gaps among staff, collaborative solutions through internal mentoring and adaptive training have proven effective in significantly enhancing administrative capacity. This research affirms that administrative staff are no longer merely support personnel, but essential actors in the success of madrasah management. Theoretically, this research extends the application of competency-based management and learning organisation models by positioning administrative staff as key subjects. In practice, these findings encourage madrasahs and similar educational institutions to design training programs that are better aligned with the real needs of administrative staff. Furthermore, this study makes a unique contribution to filling the literature gap on madrasah administrative management by providing an integrative model that connects digital transformation, competency-based development, and service quality improvement.

Abstract

This study examines how an Islamic senior high school in Indonesia implements a cyclical, participatory quality assurance (QA) model to strengthen educational outcomes. It addresses the need for context-responsive QA systems in faith-based institutions, where religious values and global standards must be harmonized. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research draws upon interviews, observations, and document analysis involving school leaders, teachers, and students at MAPK MAN 1 Surakarta. Data were examined through thematic analysis to uncover institutional strategies and stakeholder interactions in QA implementation. Ethical approval was obtained, and reflexivity was maintained to ensure trustworthiness. The findings highlight a five-phase QA cycle that includes mapping, planning, implementation, evaluation, and renewal. These processes are rooted in theological values while incorporating student participation. Several institutional mechanisms, such as digital dashboards, student surveys, electronic report cards, and curriculum review forums, contributed to strengthening graduate achievements in university admissions, academic competitions, and bilingual proficiency. The participatory approach cultivated shared accountability among stakeholders, fostering a culture of quality that integrates spiritual formation with academic excellence. This research presents a contextually grounded model of quality assurance for Islamic education. It enhances the traditional PDCA cycle by embedding moral and spiritual accountability and inclusive governance. The study advances discourse on integrating religious principles into QA frameworks while addressing contemporary educational standards and diverse stakeholder expectations. Although the findings are specific to one Islamic senior high school in Java, the model provides valuable insights for other faith-based institutions seeking to build participatory and value-oriented QA systems in resource-limited contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB) in resolving conflicts within an Islamic educational setting. Conflicts are an inevitable aspect of collective life; yet, their management reflects the maturity and solidarity of an organisation. The research aims to identify and describe how OCB contributes to effective conflict management in maintaining organisational harmony. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through purposive and snowball sampling, with observations, interviews, and document analysis. The data were analysed using an inductive conceptualisation approach to capture patterns emerging from participants’ experiences. The findings reveal that conflicts within the institution are generally situational and temporary, and do not escalate into latent disputes. The existence of organisational forums, a tradition of deliberation, and the strong leadership role of spiritual figures ensure that conflict management operates effectively. Furthermore, collective solidarity is reinforced through cooperative problem-solving and mutual agreements. OCB—manifested through sincerity, humility, loyalty, and faith in spiritual rewards—serves as social capital in preserving social equilibrium. The integration of spirituality-based OCB and deliberation-oriented conflict resolution fosters a resilient and adaptive organisational culture. These findings suggest that cultivating spirituality-driven OCB can transform conflict from a disruptive force into a constructive process of social learning and institutional strengthening.

Abstract

The issuance of PMA No. 71 of 2015, later revised as PMA No. 32 of 2020, formally positioned Ma’had Aly within Indonesia’s pesantren-based higher education system. This policy marked a significant transformation by integrating traditional Islamic scholarship with formal academic standards under the Islamic Religious Higher Education (PTKI) framework. The study aims to analyse the management dynamics, educational quality, and strategic role of Ma’had Aly in strengthening the national Islamic higher education ecosystem. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and direct observations at three leading Ma’had Aly institutions: Salafiyah Syafi’iyah Situbondo, Hasyim Asy’ari Tebuireng, and Iqna Ath Tholibin Rembang. The findings indicate that Ma’had Aly remains structurally dependent on the traditional pesantren model, where kiai hold central authority in governance and academic orientation. Despite the strength of classical Islamic pedagogy, which uses methods such as sorogan and bandongan, graduates often face limitations in professional and research skills compared to PTKI students. The study highlights the strategic potential of Ma’had Aly as a bridge between classical Islamic learning and modern higher education. Integrating practical competencies, research capacity, and institutional collaboration with PTKI is essential to enhance its academic relevance and societal impact, ensuring Ma’had Aly contributes effectively to the development of Indonesia’s Islamic intellectual landscape.

Abstract

This study explores the transformative orientation of the Jabalul Hikmah Curriculum as an emerging model for re-envisioning Islamic higher learning in Indonesia. Amid global demands for integrative, future-oriented educational systems, Islamic universities face the challenge of reconstructing their curriculum to remain intellectually relevant and socially impactful. The purpose of this article is to analyse how the Jabalul Hikmah Curriculum offers a transdisciplinary framework for global innovation, positioning it as a significant contribution to contemporary Islamic higher education discourse. A qualitative–phenomenological approach was employed, combining content analysis with field-based inquiry. Data were collected from key stakeholders at UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri Purwokerto and triangulated with insights from UIN Maliki Malang, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, and UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta as comparative benchmarks. The analytical procedures followed a systematic approach to data reduction, data display, and conclusion verification. The study adopts Evelina M. Vicencio’s curriculum development framework, which consists of designing, planning, implementing, and evaluating. The findings reveal that the Jabalul Hikmah Curriculum represents a substantive curricular innovation, integrating Islamic epistemology, human development, and contemporary scientific paradigms within a unified architecture. Its alignment with the national Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy demonstrates both relevance and adaptability. The study’s implications highlight the curriculum’s potential to serve as a global model for Islamic higher education reform, offering a replicable pathway toward holistic, future-ready intellectual formation.

Abstract

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a pivotal role in advancing comprehensive and balanced human capital development. Amid rapid globalization, digital transformation, and the erosion of moral values, HEIs face increasing challenges in cultivating well-rounded individuals who can meet contemporary demands while upholding ethical and spiritual principles. As market-driven education increasingly prioritizes technical and professional competencies, the nurturing of moral integrity and holistic growth is often neglected. Therefore, this study investigates how the Arabic Language Education Program contributes to holistic human capital development through Islamic educational leadership, focusing on students’ lived experiences, leadership formation, and value-based educational practices. Employing a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory sequential design, the research commenced with qualitative data collection through interviews with 50 informants and document analysis, followed by a quantitative survey involving 184 respondents. Data were analyzed thematically and descriptively, and findings from both phases were triangulated to enhance interpretive validity. The study identifies four principal dimensions of human capital development: (i) Leadership Experiences and Opportunities, (ii) Religious Development and Spiritual Strengthening, (iii) Local and Socio-Cultural Influences, and (iv) Challenges and Obstacles in Human Capital Development. The findings provide critical insights for policymakers and stakeholders in refining leadership policies and educational strategies, thereby reinforcing the foundations of human development agendas at both national and global levels.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the mediating role of gratitude in the relationship between self-efficacy and prosocial behavior, and to examine its implications for teacher education management in Indonesia. Teachers’ prosocial behavior plays a vital role in creating a caring, collaborative, and conducive school climate. While self-efficacy is believed to encourage teachers’ involvement in altruistic actions, the psychological mechanism linking self-efficacy and prosocial behavior through gratitude remains underexplored, particularly in collectivist and religious contexts such as Indonesia. This research employed a cross-sectional quantitative survey design. Self-efficacy, gratitude, and prosocial behavior were measured using standardized Likert-type scales administered to in-service teachers, and data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The analysis followed two main stages: (1) evaluation of the measurement model to test reliability as well as convergent and discriminant validity, and (2) evaluation of the structural model to estimate path coefficients, explained variance (R²), effect sizes, and indirect effects using bootstrapping procedures. The findings provide significant evidence for the crucial mediating role of gratitude in linking self-efficacy to prosocial behavior. Teachers with high self-efficacy are more likely to engage in prosocial actions, both directly and through the internalization of appreciation.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and analyze the implementation of environmental education grounded in the concept of ecotauhid (Islamic ecotheology) among students at the Darul Hijrah Putera Martapura Islamic Boarding School. This research focuses on identifying how ecotahyd values are integrated into educational activities and how this approach contributes to shaping students' ecological awareness and character. The novelty of this research lies in its emphasis on ecota-tawheed as a holistic framework that unites beliefs, knowledge, and environmental responsibility within the pesantren context. This qualitative study uses observation, interviews, and documentation to examine forms of environmental education, which include: (1) Curricular, through Aqidah Akhlak, Fiqh, and Islamic Religious Education subjects that contain values based on ecotauhid; (2) Co-curricular, through enrichment activities such as fisheries, agriculture, and reforestation; and (3) Extracurricular, through the Adiwiyata program that promotes environmental protection and appreciation. The development of the Eco Pesantren and Agrosilvofishery programs shows the integration of religious practices with environmental sustainability. This study concludes that ecotauhid-based education increases students' ecological awareness while fostering a religious, independent, and competitive generation.

Abstract

Tensions and conflicts are recurring challenges in multicultural and multireligious societies, particularly in regions marked by substantial cultural diversity. In this context, local wisdom rooted in indigenous communities functions as a vital form of Islamic socio-educational capital that can foster social harmony. This research is grounded in the assumption that indigenous cultural values, when articulated within an Islamic ethical framework, play a strategic role in shaping peaceful coexistence. The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of Penginyongan culture as a socio-educational strategy for strengthening harmony among indigenous communities in Banyumas Raya from an Islamic perspective. This study employs a qualitative field research Design, with data collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using an ethnographic approach, supported by symbolic interactionism and the constant comparative method to capture the dynamic meanings embedded in cultural practices. The findings demonstrate that the development of Penginyongan culture operates through three interconnected strategies: survival strategies aimed at preserving cultural identity, structural strategies institutionalized within social and religious structures, and network strategies that reinforce communal solidarity. These strategies foster collective awareness and sustained community participation in spiritual and ritual activities. The study concludes that Penginyongan culture nurtures lived religious expressions that integrate individual piety with social piety, thereby strengthening social harmony. The implications of this research suggest that locally rooted Islamic socio-education can serve as a replicable model for conflict mitigation and harmony-building in other pluralistic societies, proving that harmony is not imported but cultivated.
