Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and insulin resistance, associated with decreased nitric oxide (NO) levels, increased free radical production, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and progressive vascular damage. C-reactive protein (CRP), an acute phase protein regulated by pro-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-6 (IL-6), serves as a systemic inflammation marker. Pentameric CRP (pCRP) and monomeric CRP (mCRP) are implicated in mediating inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, with roles in endothelial cell adhesion, phagocytosis, inflammatory signaling, and interactions with endothelial cells, neutrophils, macrophages, and platelets. Additionally, leukocytes secrete platelet-activating factors, enhancing platelet activation and cytokine and chemokine release. This descriptive analytical study with a cross-sectional design aimed to investigate the correlation between CRP levels and platelet counts in patients with type 2 DM. Utilizing purposive sampling, 47 patients diagnosed with DM at Sultan Syarif Mohamad Alkadrie Hospital, Pontianak, during June 2023 were selected. CRP levels were measured using the fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) method, while platelet counts were determined through the impedance method. Statistical analysis employing Kendall's Tau-b test revealed a significant correlation (p < 0.05, r = -0.508), indicating that elevated CRP levels are significantly associated with reduced platelet counts in type 2 DM patients.

Abstract

Gynura procumbens is a diuretic plant that has been used traditionally to cure kidney stones. In order to determine the calcium levels in the rats' kidneys, the anti-nephrolithiasis activity of male white rats was tested in this study. This research method was carried out experimentally in a laboratory which included sampling, plant identification, making simplicia, making ethanol extract of sambung nyawa leaves, characteristics of simplicia, phytochemical screening, administering animal test preparations, then the data was analyzed using the Anova test. Oral administration of succulent leaf extract is done at three different doses: 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg bw. A positive control is provided with Batugin elixir, which is 0.54 mL/125 g BW and induced at a volume of 7.5 mL/125 g BW/day using ethylene glycol 0.75% and ammonium chloride 2%. The study's findings demonstrated that, with a kidney stone inhibitor percentage of 31.71%, the ethanol extract of Sambung Nyawa leaves at a dose of 200 mg/kg BW was more successful in preventing the formation of kidney stones than doses of 50 mg/kg BW and 100 mg/kg BW. This proves that the ethanol extract from Sambung Nyawa leaves can be an alternative way to prevent kidney stones. The conclusion is that the ethanol extract of Gynura procumbens L. leaves has antinephrolithiasis activity in male white rats, especially at a dose of 200 mg/kg BW. It also reduced calcium oxalate levels in mice induced by ethylene glycol and ammonium chloride.

Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has infected many people throughout the world. In Indonesia alone, around 540,000 people have been infected with HIV and are living with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Until now, antiretroviral drug therapy (ARV) is the best choice which aims to reduce the risk of transmission, prevent worsening due to opportunistic infections, improve the quality of life of sufferers, and reduce the amount of virus (viral load) in the blood until it is undetectable. The aim of this study was to explain the effectiveness of taking ARV drugs in reducing viral load rates in patients at the Tulipe Clinic, M. Th. Hospital. Djaman, Sanggau Regency. This is a non-experimental quantitative research with a cross-sectional design. Sampling technique using purposive sampling, with the criteria applied, namely that respondents are ODHA or patients who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, have undergone ARV therapy for at least six months, and are willing to become respondents so that a total of 89 people during 2022 – 2023 were obtained. The results of the study showed that the duration of taking ARVs ranged from 6 to 98 months, the viral load number was 14 - 35,400 copies/ml. The Spearman test obtained a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), which means that taking ARV medication is effective in reducing viral load rates in Tulipe Clinic patients at M. Th. Hospital. Djaman, Sanggau Regency. Based on the results, it is expected that future studies can measure viral load along with molecular immunological parameters such as cytokine and antibody levels.

Abstract

Premature birth is the main cause of high perinatal mortality rates. The lower the birth weight, the higher the incidence of morbidity and mortality. WHO says there are 15 million babies born prematurely every year throughout the world. Of the 15 million premature babies, 1.1 million babies were reported to have died due to various complications. Premature birth and complications in labor are always associated, such as asphyxia, infection and birth defects, which are the cause of most neonatal deaths. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between parity and anemia with the incidence of preterm labor. This research is a quantitative observational analytical study with an individual matched case-control design, a retrospective approach using secondary data from mothers giving birth in the Obstetrics and Obstetrics Department of Arifin Achmad Hospital Riau for the period January 2016 – December 2018 which was carried out in May – June 2023. The sample size was 259 cases and 259 controls. From the parity chi-square test carried out, a p-value of 0.855 (≥ 0.05) was obtained, where it was concluded that there was no relationship between parity and the incidence of premature labor and from the chi-square test for anemia, a p-value of 0.00 was obtained ( <0.05) so it can be concluded that there is a relationship between anemia in pregnancy and OT at Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province. It is recommended that pregnant women check their HB levels to avoid amenia which can cause premature labor and also to avoid other factors that cause premature labor.

Abstract

Overweight in female adolescence can disrupt growth and increase the risk of non-communicable diseases. Many determinants of overweight include sleep quality and nutritional intake. Late-night sleep can reduce sleep quality, trigger imbalances in leptin and ghrelin hormones, increase appetite, and lead to excessive nutritional intake. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship and the magnitude of the risk between sleep quality and nutritional intake on overweight in female adolescence. This research employs a case-control design and multistage sampling technique. 160 female students participated in the study who were divided base on normal nutritional status and overweight. The research was conducted in the city of Jambi in May 2023. Sleep quality measurement used the IPAQ (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) questionnaire, and nutritional intake was assessed using a 3x24-hour recall form. BMI screening was conducted before interviewing the respondents. Data analysis utilized chi-square tests and logistic regression. The chi-square test results showed a significant relationship between sleep quality, energy intake, carbohydrate intake, and protein intake with overweight (p<0.05). Sleep quality, energy intake, and carbohydrate intake simultaneously influenced overweight occurrence in female adolescence by 11.1%. Adolescents are advised to diversify carbohydrate types and increase protein portions. Physical activities should be adjusted to optimize sleep quality.

Abstract

While the incidence of dysmenorrhea is relatively high worldwide, the prevalence of dysmenorrhea reported in the literature varies substantially. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea. This research is a cross analytical design. The sample in this study was all medical faculty students at Riau University in 2019-2022, namely 410 people. From the research results, it was found that there was a relationship between menstrual blood volume, history of food allergies and stress with the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea. Meanwhile, the incidence of secondary dysmenorrhea was related to age, menstrual cycle, history of the sample's gestational age at birth, history of low birth weight (LBW), history of emotional violence, stress and birth history of samples from preeclamptic mothers at the time of delivery. This research concluded that there were several significant findings regarding factors related to the occurrence of dysmenorrhea in Riau University medical students in 2019 - 2022. The research showed the importance of paying attention to factors such as the length of the menstrual cycle, history of food allergies, history of emotional violence, stress, and history of maternal preeclampsia in efforts to prevent and manage dysmenorrhea in the population. It is recommended that future research further explore the association between the identified risk factors and the incidence of dysmenorrhea, potentially revealing additional insights to guide clinical practice and public health initiatives.
