Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of santri character education at Madrasah Aliyah Tahfizhul Qur'an Isy Karima Karanganyar, Central Java, from the perspective of Dr. Abdul Karim Zaidan. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, this research explores the values, norms, and culture that shape the character of santri through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data triangulation was conducted to verify the validity of the information. At the same time, data analysis used a process of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing to understand the practice of character education in depth. The results show that the character education model in this madrasah uses a holistic approach that integrates Islamic values with modern education theory. Methods such as modeling, habituation, teaching through Qur'anic stories, giving advice, discipline, and targhib create an effective character-building process. Values such as piety, independence, honesty, discipline, social care, tolerance, and responsibility are internalized through daily routines, teaching and learning activities, and extracurricular activities. This model not only focuses on moral development but also supports academic achievement, such as the success of santri in science olympiads and Al-Qur'an memorization competitions. This research makes a practical contribution to the Islamic character education literature by showing how religious values can be integrated into the formal education system to form a generation with superior personalities. This model can be a reference for other educational institutions designing holistic and value-based education programs.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of ethnic-based verbal bullying in a multicultural junior high school setting in Indonesia, focusing on the experiences of teachers at SMP Swasta Swabina Karya Medan. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participatory observations, and document analysis involving seven purposively selected participants—comprising five subject teachers, one guidance counselor, and the principal. The analysis followed Moustakas’ phenomenological procedures, enabling the identification of core themes related to teachers' mediation strategies, integration of tolerance values into pedagogy, and institutional challenges in fostering multicultural understanding. Findings reveal that verbal bullying targeting minority students significantly impacts their psychological, social, and academic well-being, often underestimated by peers as mere jest. Teachers played a pivotal role as mediators, utilizing open dialogue, promoting inclusivity, and implementing intervention programs rooted in multicultural education. These strategies were found effective in mitigating bullying incidents and enhancing interethnic harmony. The study emphasizes the importance of institutional commitment through regular educational programs on diversity, strengthened school-parent collaboration, provision of counseling services, and ongoing evaluation of anti-bullying policies. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics of ethnic relations in schools and offers practical implications for educators and policymakers to build more inclusive educational environments.

Abstract

Integrating digital technology into Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) is increasingly essential to preserve and revitalise traditional Islamic education in response to modern pedagogical demands. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach utilising the ADDIE model—analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—focusing on the initial development phase. The primary objective was to design a digital learning tool that supports using the Pegon script and the broader Islamic intellectual heritage of the archipelago. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with pesantren stakeholders, including ustadz/ustadzah, students (santri), and religious institutional representatives. Feasibility assessments were conducted through expert and practitioner validation using content, language, and visual presentation questionnaires. Qualitative data were analysed through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, while quantitative data were processed using eligibility percentage calculations. The results indicated that the developed virtual Pegon keyboard and rumah kitab (digital book repository) prototypes were categorised as "very feasible" based on expert evaluation. Findings suggest that the successful implementation of digital tools in pesantren requires the pedagogical readiness of educators and students and institutional policy support regarding the use of electronic devices. The digitalisation of pesantren through these applications offers a viable solution to preserving and transmitting Islamic knowledge and local cultural values in both face-to-face and online learning environments. This research contributes to the growing field of digital Islamic education by offering a contextually grounded and culturally sensitive innovation in educational technology design.

Abstract

Multicultural education has a vital role in instilling the values of tolerance, mutual respect, and inclusive attitudes in students in a diverse society. However, the implementation and concrete impact of multicultural education at the secondary school level, especially in the local context of Indonesia, are still rarely researched in depth. This study aims to examine the implementation of multicultural education at SMP Negeri 1 Kotapinang and analyze its impact on grade IX students' character-building and social attitudes. The approach used is qualitative with an analytical descriptive design. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and field notes. Informants comprised two principals, six teachers, and ten students purposively selected based on active involvement in the multicultural education program. Data validity was maintained through source and method triangulation. Analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model with inductive coding techniques to identify the main themes related to multicultural education's implementation, impact, and challenges. The research found three primary strategies in the implementation of multicultural education: (1) integration of diversity values in the learning process and student group dynamics; (2) interfaith religious classes that encourage dialogue and mutual understanding; and (3) use of innovative media such as Bhineka Chatbot as a means of learning diversity. These strategies shape an inclusive learning environment and increase students' social awareness. Multicultural education at SMP Negeri 1 Kotapinang has proven effective in shaping students' humanist character and strengthening their social attitudes. The findings provide a practical contribution to developing diversity-based character education policies at the secondary school level.

Abstract

doctrine but as a basic epistemology in Islamic education that encourages reflective awareness and pluralistic values. By integrating the philosophical-anthropological dimensions of humans as 'abd Allah and khalīfah fī al-ardh, inclusive tawhid views humans as unfinished beings who need mujahadah, spiritual and intellectual struggle through a meaningful educational process. Amid global challenges such as Islamophobia, ideological polarization, and identity crisis in a multicultural society, inclusive tawhid offers a transformative education model that builds solidarity based on universal spirituality, not doctrinal uniformity. This research uses an exploratory qualitative approach with a comprehensive literature study of scientific publications related to inclusive tawhid-based Islamic education. Data were collected from accredited journal articles, academic books, and public secondary sources, then thematically analyzed to identify patterns, values, and philosophical foundations in the discourse of inclusive Islamic education. The results show that inclusive tawhid is a strong epistemological basis for reconstructing a more dialogic, tolerant, and humanistic Islamic education paradigm. In addition, this study emphasizes the urgency of reforming the national curriculum to be more sensitive to religious and cultural plurality and to get out of the normative-liberal and conservative-literal dichotomy. This study provides a theoretical contribution to the philosophy of Islamic education and a strategic foundation for curriculum development based on universal ethical and spiritual values.

Abstract

This research is a study of the local cultural tradition integration in Islamic education that focuses on the Malam 1 Suro tradition in Petanusugi Village, Indonesia. The research was conducted through a qualitative case study, and data were gathered via in-depth interviewing, participant observation and document analysis. Key informants were also purposively selected and were religious teachers, community leaders, and educational officers. The study examines how Islamic educational structures can be made to align with culturally embedded practices while preserving theological coherence, especially the doctrine of tawhid. Results indicate a range of attitudes between firm support and outright refusal of the tradition, depending on its perceived conformity with Islamic norms. Others, such as congregational prayer or religious sermons, were considered pedagogically compatible with Islamic values. Still, other rituals that include influential gestures, such as tapa bisu (silent puberty fast), had to be revisited in theological terms. The study notes that Islamic educational values, tazkiyatun nafs, muraqabah, silaturahmi, and tauhid, can be found in traditional formats, indicating that, in fact, learning from local wisdom can be placed in the context of character and spiritual education. This research contributes to the literature on contextual Islamic pedagogy and supports the indigenization framework by providing empirical evidence of culturally responsive religious education. Practical implications include the need for policy frameworks that support curriculum adaptation, capacity-building for educators, and the development of an Islamic Cultural Education (ICE) model. These findings affirm that Islamic education can be made more inclusive, dynamic, and contextually relevant through dialogical engagement with local traditions under theological guidance.

Abstract

This study aims to examine in depth the role of teachers in guiding students' time management as a strategy to improve academic achievement. Using a qualitative approach with data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, this study was conducted at MTs Swasta IRA Medan, involving teachers and students as the main subjects. The study results indicate that teachers play a strategic role as material conveyors and mentors in character development and learning skills, including time management. The strategies implemented include instilling time discipline in the classroom, using daily planners, creating to-do lists, applying the Pomodoro technique, and maintaining active communication with parents. Implementing these strategies positively impacted fostering students' awareness of the importance of time management, improving learning discipline, and helping them achieve better academic results. However, challenges were still found, such as a lack of awareness among students, procrastination habits, and limited training for teachers in guiding time management systematically. This study emphasizes the importance of collaboration between teachers, students, and parents in creating a disciplined and results-oriented learning culture. These findings are expected to serve as a basis for designing educational policies more responsive to developing time management skills as part of character education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of group guidance services with problem solving techniques in increasing the motivation and learning discipline of tahfidz students in a madrasah environment. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, involving 20 purposively selected students from MTs Al-Washliyah Lubuk Amat, North Sumatra. Participants were divided into two groups: experimental and control. The experimental group attended six 60-minute structured group guidance sessions designed to foster self-awareness, identify learning barriers and formulate solutions independently. The intervention was designed by integrating the spiritual values and commitment that characterize tahfidz education. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test using a Likert scale questionnaire that has been tested for validity and reliability (r = 0.456-0.986; α = 0.871). The paired sample t-test results showed a statistically significant increase in scores in the experimental group (mean difference = 24.95; p = 0.000), with a very large effect size (Cohen's d = 2.51). These findings prove that problem-solving-based group guidance is effective in supporting the behavioral and cognitive development of students who face academic and spiritual demands simultaneously. Theoretically, this study integrates Bandura's self-efficacy theory with the Islamic counseling framework. Practically, this study presents an intervention model that can be replicated in educational institutions that organize tahfidz programs. This study fills a void in the literature related to structured psychopedagogical interventions in the context of religious value-based education.
