Abstract

Oil palm kernel shells (KS) are a byproduct of oil palm processing that often receives little attention and is treated as waste. Biochar has various applications for example as an adsorbent. This study aims to prepare and characterize biochar from KS and evaluate its effectiveness in adsorbing Cu2+. The biochar (BKS) was prepared by heating KS in a furnace at 500°C for three hours. The resulting material was sieved using a 50-mesh sieve to ensure uniformity. Characterization of BKS showed that it had a surface area of 319.9 m2 g-1, a total pore volume of 0.168 cm3 g-1, and an average pore size of 1.049 nm, classifying it as microporous. Analysis for its functional groups revealed the presence of functional groups with stretching vibrations corresponding to O-H (3400 cm-1), C-H (2920 cm-1), C=O (1700 cm-1), C=C (1432-1690 cm-1), and C-O (1000-1200 cm-1). SEM imaging displayed a clear porous structure with well-defined channels. Adsorption isotherm experiments demonstrated that Cu2+ adsorption data using BKS aligned better with the Freundlich isotherm model than with the Langmuir model. These findings indicate that BKS derived from KS is less effective for removing Cu2+ ions from water compared to other biochars.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a valid, reliable, and practical value-based character education assessment instrument to support the implementation of character education in Health Colleges. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with seven stages, namely needs analysis, instrument design, expert validation, initial trials, revision, field trials, and evaluation. The needs analysis was conducted through literature studies, interviews, and observations at Sapta Bakti Health College to identify the main values of character education, such as integrity, responsibility, cooperation, and empathy, which then served as the basis for the development of indicators and instrument formats. The instrument was validated by character education experts and evaluations to ensure content and construct validity. Initial trials on a small number of respondents were used to identify weaknesses in the instrument before revisions were made. Next, the field trial involved Sapta Bakti Health College students with reliability analysis (Cronbach's Alpha) and factor analysis, which showed a Cronbach's Alpha value above 0.8 as an indicator of high reliability. This instrument is also considered practical by lecturers and is expected to be an effective tool in assessing student character development objectively and systematically, as well as encouraging the strengthening of value-based character education in the curriculum.

Abstract

This study explores the development and implementation of electronic learning materials with interactive reading, scaffolding, and modelling (IRTaMS) strategies to improve the knowledge and skills of prospective physics teachers in designing learning that refers to the 4C skills-oriented Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. This study uses the ADDIE development model which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research subjects involved 24 prospective teachers of the Physics Education Program at a university in West Kalimantan with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test–posttest design. The research instruments included expert validation sheets, attitude scales, knowledge tests, and skill assessment rubrics. Data analysis includes; analysis of the validity of learning products using Aiken's V coefficient from expert judges' scores, percentage analysis to determine the level of readability, Wilcoxon Test to measure the significance of the difference between pre-test and post-test (including pre-task and post-task), and analysis of the average N-Gain (<g>) to determine the extent of the increase in knowledge and skills of prospective teachers. The results of expert validation and user responses indicate that electronic learning materials with IRTaMS strategies have a high level of validity and readability. The results of the study also showed a significant increase in the knowledge and skills of prospective teachers in designing PBL-based physics learning oriented to 4C skills, as reflected in the N-Gain value in the medium to high category. Skills improvement includes the formulation of learning objectives, criteria for achieving learning objectives, teaching materials, assessment planning, media use, and learning stages. The research findings indicate that the integration of IRTaMS strategies in digital technology-based electronic learning materials has strong potential in strengthening the pedagogical competence of prospective physics teachers, although comparative exploration with a control group is still needed in further research. This study contributes to the development of digital learning innovations through practical and contextual approaches to support 21st-century physics learning.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the need for the development and application of learning media as an effort to improve students' digital literacy. The research method carried out is the determination of keywords, namely "digital literacy competency education" and "journal" in the Publish or Perish (PoP) software as a research data source database with the Scopus database, resulting in 157 articles from 2014-2024 and obtaining 42 articles as samples in accordance with the keyword criteria. Meta-data analysis was carried out using Mendeley and VOSViewer to visualize a bibliographic network with research variables such as the year of publication of the article, the country of publication of the journal, the name of the author of the article, and the article with the most citations. The results of the analysis show that the development and application of learning media as an effort to improve students' digital literacy is indeed needed in supporting the learning process and can be an interesting alternative method to improve student academic achievement. In addition, the results of mapping analysis using VOSviewer show several themes about the use of comic-based physics learning media such as 'university student', 'application', 'role', 'scientific literacy', and 'effect' which are still rarely researched and become the latest themes in research. So it can be concluded that the development and application of learning media as an effort to improve students' digital literacy needs to be researched again.

Abstract

This study integrates local wisdom as a basis for developing contextual chemistry education in the Ciayumajakuning region, Indonesia. Using the Model of Educational Reconstruction (MER) as its theoretical framework and an ethnographic approach to deeply explore cultural values, the research aims to identify potential local wisdom practices and map the scientific structure embedded within them. Through surveys, direct observations, interviews, and literature reviews, three local wisdom contexts—peuyeum ketan, jamasan keris, and the production of traditional Majalengka roof tiles—were identified and analyzed. The findings reveal that each context encompasses fundamental chemical concepts such as fermentation reactions, redox processes, thermochemistry, kinetics, and atomic and mineral structure. In-depth analysis uncovers a close interrelationship between cultural practices and chemical principles, thereby opening opportunities for the development of teaching materials and instructional models that are not only scientifically accurate but also culturally relevant. These results are expected to enhance students' interest in and understanding of chemistry through a meaningful contextual approach.
