Abstract

The traces of colonialism continue to shape the way we think and understand culture, identity and power. This is often through stigmatized ideas of race and simplified distinctions between “us” and “them.” These narratives, rooted in colonial discourse, tend to ignore the complexity of indigenous realities. This research attempts to explore how postcolonial writers challenge and deconstruct these dominant narratives, revealing their political and ideological underpinnings. Drawing on Jacques Derrida’s concept of deconstruction, it examines how contradictions in colonial texts can be exposed and subverted to make room for alternative voices. Through an in-depth analysis of literary works such as The Wretched of the Earth, Season of Migration to the North, 1984, and The Book of Chameleons. The findings of the study highlight how literature becomes a tool of resistance that, through deconstruction and subversion, reshapes identities, reclaims silenced stories, and undermines colonial authority. Equally significant, by demonstrating that meaning is never fixed, the strategies of deconstruction and subversion employed in these works underscore the power of literature to disrupt hegemonic narratives and to open up new, pluralistic perspectives on the complexities of the postcolonial world.

Abstract

This study examining language as a complex field of power, rather than merely a neutral means of communication. Every form of language use—whether words, dialects, or accents—contains political, historical, and social connotations that reflect and reinforce power hierarchies. In the era of globalization, the dominance of hegemonic languages such as English, as well as national languages such as Indonesian, has led to the marginalization of minority languages, affecting group identities and shifting cultural landscapes. Using a qualitative approach, this study explores the hidden meanings behind language practices and uncovers the power relations involved. Pierre Bourdieu's theory of symbolic power is used to understand language as a form of social capital that has symbolic value in the structure of society. The analysis compares the context of English hegemony globally and in Indonesia, as well as the position of Indonesian and regional languages in the national sphere. The findings highlight the importance of an additive multilingualism approach in language policy to ensure social justice and equitable distributed linguistic capital. Thus, language is posited not merely as a tool of communication but as a crucial instrument of power in social dynamics.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide an in-depth analysis of the types, functions, and manner of speech acts utilised in al-Ghazali's notion on educational concept. The study employed a content analysis methodology, which entailed gathering data from a variety of sources, including Al-Ghazali's writings and scholarly articles related to his works. The findings of this study reveal that al-Ghazali's idea of education in is dominated by directive speech acts, followed by assertive acts and constative acts. The category of recommending acts makes up the vast majority of directive acts, whereas order acts are somewhat less common. Further, Al-Ghazali’s use of speech acts tends to emphasize a competitive function, followed by a collaborative one. Interestingly, neither convivial nor conflicting functions are presented in this study. The dominance of directive speech acts, highlight Al-Ghazali's preference for providing guidance and advice to his readers in a harmonious and respectful communication style. Furthermore, Al-Ghazali's use of speech acts can be classified primarily as literal and direct speech acts, with subsequent employment of indirect and non-literal forms.. These findings contribute to the teaching learning process including English language in applying speech act. Finally, this study highlights the significance of considering the types, functions, and manner of performing speech acts propose to  teachers and students in English language teaching learning process.

Abstract

The teaching of English For Young Learners (TEYL) in Indonesia has become increasingly prominent in response to globalization and the growing need for English proficiency in academic and professional spheres. Despite this rising demand, the implementation of English education at the early childhood and primary school level encounters significant challenges. These include inconsistent educational policies, a lack of adequately trained teachers, and insufficient teaching and learning resources. This study investigates the current landscape of English language education for young learners in Indonesia by examining national education policies and classroom practices. The research identifies key issues such as the incongruent of a standardized curriculum, minimal pre-service and in-service teacher training specific to TEYL, and disparities in access to quality English instructions and materials between urban and rural schools. Therefore, this current study proposes a strategic roadmap aimed at enhancing the quality and effectiveness of TEYL in Indonesia. These include policy reforms, targeted teacher development programs, curriculum enhancements, and improved resource allocation. The findings are intended to inform policymakers, educational institutions, and practitioners in developing a sustainable roadmap for TEYL in Indonesia.

Abstract

ABSTRACT ENGLISHFilm is a discursive sphere where cultural meanings are constructed and debated through visual storytelling. Therefore, it is significant to expose binary contradictions in neoliberal gender ideology and reveal structural violence against women hidden behind narratives of social mobility in film. This study, thus, aims to unravel the complexity of gender and class representations in Anora (2024) through a critical analysis of “Neoliberal Cinderella” discourse, which frames labour relations as romance and shifts the costs of social reproduction onto women's bodies. This research employs interpretive qualitative study with two mutually reinforcing analytical frameworks. First, Derrida's Deconstruction to identify and dismantle dominant binary oppositions (love versus money, spontaneity versus strategy, reality versus fantasy) through an in-depth reading of mise-en-scène, dialogue and material markers. Second, Marxist-feminist perspective is utilised to map the political economy of affective labor, the mechanisms of commodification through gifts and access, and the unequal distribution of risks and costs affecting the main character, Ani. The results show that Anora both produces and disrupts the neoliberal Cinderella myth by revealing the hidden costs behind the promise of social mobility (social climbing): fragmented time, exploited emotions, and commodified security. The movie reveals that social mobility is a lease, not a right, and that love is used to glorify labour contracts. This paper proposes a methodological bridge of Marxist-feminist and deconstruction for cultural criticism that demands structural redistribution and recognition of affective labour as real work that is entitled to protection, compensation, and dignity.

Abstract

Discrimination and racism have been obvious for decades. This encompasses derogatory racial epithets such as "nigger, niggers, n-words". The objective of this study was to employ corpus-based analysis in order to examine the frequency of racial derogatory expressions across various genres of literature. The COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) data were employed to perform a corpus-based linguistic analysis of the terms 'nigger', 'niggers', and 'n-word' over a span of 20 years (1990 to 2019).  Although the words "niggers" and "n-word" have similar meanings, the occurrence of the word "niggers" and "n-word" in the corpora was significantly less frequent compared to the word "nigger." Primarily, the term "niggers" was used as a plural indicator for the derogatory term "nigger". The frequency with which individuals who use derogatory language, such as the term "niggers," associate themselves with pronouns like "they," "us," "those," "all of you," etc., suggests the existence of these patterns. The sole term that displays a notably diverse frequency distribution across genres is the n-word (in comparison to these two terms).

Abstract

This study examines how language constructs power and ideology in Elon Musk’s Town Hall Speech in Pennsylvania through Fairclough’s (2010) three-dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The analysis investigates how linguistic features and rhetorical strategies function to legitimize technopopulism, a discourse that merges technocratic authority with populist appeal. Drawing on the full transcript of the speech, data were analyzed across textual, discursive, and sociocultural dimensions. The findings reveal that Musk’s discourse combines emotional populism with rational technocracy. At the textual level, metaphors, inclusive pronouns, and crisis framing generate collective urgency and moral unity. Through digital mediation on X (formerly Twitter), the speech evolves from a local communicative act into a global ideological performance. At the sociocultural level, Musk’s rhetoric naturalizes neoliberal and technocratic values such as efficiency and deregulation, framing them as moral imperatives. The study concludes that Musk’s language conceals domination behind narratives of innovation and progress, exemplifying how technopopulism legitimizes authority in digital capitalism. This research contributes to CDA scholarship by demonstrating that technological discourse not only reflects but actively shapes power relations and ideological formations in contemporary political communication.
