Abstract

This study investigates the challenges faced by native Fataluku speakers in learning English pronunciation and the potential confusion experienced by native English speakers when interacting with Fataluku speakers who are currently learning English. These challenges arise due to phonetic differences between the two languages which can affect the effectiveness of cross-language communication. This study used voice recordings from native Fataluku speakers and analyzed consonant and vowel sounds by applying the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM). This model allows the identification of phonetic similarities and differences between Fataluku and English sounds, as well as the prediction of potential difficulties in second language sound acquisition. The results show that Fataluku speakers face significant difficulties in pronouncing some English sounds. The main difficulties are found in consonant pairs such as /ŋ/ and /n/, which are often mispronounced or not consistently realized. In addition, vowel pairs such as /ɪ/ and /ʊ/ are also challenging, mainly due to the absence of similar sounds in Fataluku. These findings highlight the difficulties in pronunciation not only affect Fataluku learners' confidence in speaking English, but can also lead to misunderstandings in cross-cultural interactions. As a result, cross-language communication becomes less effective, potentially affecting social integration, educational and employment opportunities for Fataluku speakers. Therefore, these findings have important implications for language teaching practices, including the need for teaching strategies that focus on difficult sounds and a contrastive phonetic approach to help Fataluku speakers improve their English speaking skills.

Abstract

Al-Farabi, an Islamic philosopher, focused on the correlation between logic and language, particularly regarding the process of reasoning. He classified logic into eight components, which align with the eight books of the Aristotelian Organon, and delineated logic as a system of rules governing thought. He asserted that the objectives of logic are to govern and direct reason towards correct thinking, establish measures to prevent mistakes and assign significance to comprehensible acknowledgments of error. As Aristotle's logic encompasses a set of methods aimed at effectively persuading others, regulating debate, uncovering truths, and attaining certainty, Al-Farabi regarded the formal rules of logic as heuristics (mental shortcuts that help people make quick decisions), rather than as laws of a scientific theory. He analogized logic to tools like rulers and compasses, which are employed to guarantee precision when measuring physical objects that are susceptible to errors. Further, he characterized it as a science based on rules that regulate the mental processes involved in comprehending abstract concepts served as the basis for Ibn Sina's subsequent enhancements. Al-Farabi's philosophy of logic and language is expounded in his writings, and he deserves to be regarded on par with Plato, Aristotle, Kant, and Hegel in this aspect of his work.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the utilization of Simone de Beauvoir’s feminist-philosophical theory in a contemporary media context, specifically in Ruben Östlund's film Triangle of Sadness, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of gender and class identity construction. The critical discourse analysis was then employed to analyse the data, allowing for the identification of language and symbolic patterns that reflect patriarchal and capitalist social norms. De Beauvoir’s theories of gender and class act as the theoretical foundation for this paper, comprehend the constitution of identity as socially constructed, and provide a critical analytical tool for unravelling how established norms organize hierarchies and divisions of power within society. The results show that Triangle of Sadness is a satirical narrative that effectively deconstructs gender and class social structures. Through de Beauvoirian’s analytical lens, the film demonstrates how extreme situation that challenge dominant norms could shake social constructions of identity. Scenes ranging from an argument over who pays for dinner to power dynamics on a cruise ship, vividly demonstrate how gender and class shape identity and social interactions. This study affirms that de Beauvoirian’s theoretical framework remains relevant and pertinent for re-interpreting contemporary media discourse, particularly in comprehending the tension and conflict between social structures.

Abstract

Gender inequality is one of the recurring structural problems in various spheres of life- social, cultural, political, and economic-that not only appears in the form of violations in public spaces such as mass media, government institutions, or the workplace, but is also deeply rooted in the private sphere, especially in the family as the smallest social unit. This research aims to uncover the types of representations of gender inequality in Matshepo Msibi's TEDx Talks and analyse how Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis model can be used to unpack the power structure in gender discourse shaped. In addition to deconstructing gender representations and patriarchal ideologies in monologue (in this context TEDx Talks), this paper also aims to increase understanding of how gender inequality stems from the family settings and emphasizes the importance of addressing gender bias in everyday life. The results reveal that a hierarchical representation of gender, where men are placed as dominant figures- protective, strong, and strategic-while women are reduced to domestic roles such as washing dishes and taking care of the house. The narrative of the (monologue) talk reflects the patriarchal ideology that is still strong in the culture of society. This ideology is manifested through social rules that restrict women from accessing education, physical freedom, and equal social opportunities.
