Abstract

Abstract

The research was conducted to identify the process types of transitivity systems used in the narrative texts written by English Department Students and to determine which process type of transitivity systems is used dominantly. This research was descriptive qualitative research on descriptive analysis. The research participants were students of the English Department. This research uses three research instruments, namely the researcher himself, narrative document files, and distribution sheet of process types. In collecting the data, the researcher used the documentation method and purposive sample technique to select the data. The data analysis was done with transitivity system analysis, adapted from the lecture of the Functional Grammar course, and then several steps based on thematic coding by Braune & Clark, were applied. The triangulation technique was used to get the dependability of the data through re-checking and expert judgment. The research found that the six process types in each text of the six narratives that were the data sample were not evenly used. Three process types, behavioral, verbal, and existential, are only used in several narrative texts written by English Department Students. Moreover, the six process types of transitivity system are realized in narrative texts written by English Department Students overall. The most dominant process is the material process, which occurs 155 times out of the 346 processes that emerged, followed by behavioral processes (8 or 2.31%), mental processes (100 or 28.90%), verbal processes (5 or 1.44%), relational processes (76 or 21.96%), and existential processes (2 or 0.58%).

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Mind Mapping technique in improving junior high school students’ ability to organize ideas when writing descriptive texts at one of the public Islamic schools in West Lombok. A quasi-experimental design was used, consisting of two groups of seventh-grade students: an experimental group that received instruction through Mind Mapping and a control group that was taught using conventional methods. Before the treatment, students’ initial writing ability was relatively low, as indicated by the pre-test mean score of 60.25, showing limited skills in organizing ideas clearly and coherently. Mind Mapping, defined in this study as a visual technique that helps students generate, connect, and structure ideas through branching diagrams starting from a central concept, was applied over three instructional sessions using the Right Column Mind Map. Data were obtained from pre-test and post-test activities involving writing tasks describing a person and analyzed using an independent samples t-test in SPSS 31, including normality and homogeneity tests, to determine the significance of differences between the two groups. The findings indicated that the experimental group experienced a notable improvement, with their mean score increasing from 60.25 on the pre-test to 79.42 on the post-test—an overall gain of 19.17 points. Meanwhile, the control group’s improvement was limited to 10.41 points. The independent samples t-test showed that this difference was statistically significant (p = .001 < .05). A further analysis revealed that Mind Mapping improved three aspects of idea organization: unity (maintaining focus on the central idea), completeness (expanding relevant supporting details), and coherence (ensuring logical sequencing and smooth transitions between ideas). Thus, the null hypothesis (H?), which stated that Mind Mapping does not significantly enhance students’ ability to organize ideas, was rejected. In contrast, the alternative hypothesis (H?) was accepted. These findings imply that teachers can adopt Mind Mapping as an effective pre-writing strategy to help students plan and organize ideas more systematically, thereby supporting the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum in fostering creativity, critical thinking, and structured writing.

Abstract

Reading habits are widely believed to influence academic achievement, yet empirical evidence from rural vocational school contexts remains limited, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings. This study examined the correlation between English reading habits and reading achievement among eleventh-grade students at SMKN 2 Sekotong, a rural vocational school in Indonesia. Employing a quantitative correlational design with ex post facto approach, data were collected from 30 students selected through simple random sampling. Reading habits were measured using a Reading Habits Questionnaire (4-point Likert scale), while reading achievement was assessed through a 30-item reading comprehension test covering narrative and descriptive texts. After normality testing revealed non-normal distribution of reading achievement scores, Spearman's rank-order correlation was employed for analysis. The analysis revealed no statistically significant correlation between reading habits and reading achievement (ρ = -0.023, p = 0.902), indicating a very weak relationship. Students with similar self-reported reading habits demonstrated vastly different comprehension outcomes, with some low-habit readers outperforming high-habit readers. These findings challenge universal assumptions about the reading habits-achievement relationship and suggest that factors such as cognitive load, text appropriateness, instructional quality, and contextual resources may play more substantial roles than reading frequency alone. The results emphasize the need for contextualized, quality-focused literacy interventions rather than quantity-based approaches in rural vocational education settings

Abstract

This study explores the strategies employed by English teachers to foster reading habits among eighth-grade students and examines the challenges they encounter during the teaching and learning process. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and teacher questionnaires. The findings revealed that teachers implemented four main strategies to promote students’ reading habits: reading aloud, guided reading, silent reading, and providing motivation and vocabulary support. These strategies were applied adaptively, depending on students’ proficiency levels and classroom conditions. Despite their effectiveness in encouraging participation and improving engagement, teachers faced several obstacles, including students’ limited vocabulary, low motivation, inadequate learning media, and time constraints caused by curriculum demands. The study concludes that fostering reading habits requires not only creative and consistent teacher efforts but also strong collaboration among schools, families, and communities to provide a supportive reading environment.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of the Word Detective technique on improving the vocabulary skills of eighth-grade students at MTs. Putri At-Tahzib. The background of the study is based on initial observations showing that most students have low vocabulary skills and are less actively involved in English learning. This study used a quasi-experimental design with two groups: a control group taught conventionally and an experimental group taught using the Word Detective technique. The research sample consisted of 55 students selected through a total sampling technique. Data collection was carried out through a pre-test and post-test with an instrument in the form of 20 multiple-choice questions that have been validated and have a high level of reliability (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.798). The results of the analysis showed that the experimental group experienced an increase in average scores from 52.86 in the pre-test to 74.46 in the post-test, while the control group increased from 51.30 to 63.33. The independent samples t-test yielded a calculated t-value (5.297) greater than the t-table (2.006) at a significance level of 0.05, meaning the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. This finding proves that the Word Detective technique has a significant influence in improving students' vocabulary skills. The implications of this study indicate that the Word Detective technique can be an effective learning strategy to improve students' vocabulary skills through an active approach that utilizes contextual clues and word structures. This technique is recommended for application in English learning because it encourages active and meaningful student involvement in the vocabulary acquisition process.

Abstract

This study critically examines the representation of text genres in English for Nusantara for Grade VII and evaluates the extent to which the textbook supports the genre-based literacy expectations of the Merdeka Curriculum. The study responds to the need for systematic textbook evaluation because textbooks remain central instructional resources in English as a foreign language classrooms and because curriculum alignment cannot be inferred merely from official textbook status. A qualitative content analysis was employed to identify, classify, and interpret the main reading texts in the textbook by using three genre indicators: social function, generic structure, and linguistic features. The analysis shows that the textbook represents four principal genres, namely descriptive, procedure, recount, and report texts. Descriptive texts dominate the textbook and appear across several chapters, whereas procedure, recount, and report texts occur more narrowly and receive less sustained pedagogical attention. This pattern indicates partial alignment with Phase D learning outcomes, especially because students are expected to read, view, evaluate, and produce different kinds of texts in print, digital, visual, multimodal, and interactive forms. However, the uneven distribution also suggests that students may receive stronger support for describing familiar people, places, and objects than for developing informational, chronological, procedural, and analytical literacy. The novelty of this study lies in conceptualizing genre distribution as a critical indicator of curriculum alignment rather than treating alignment as the simple presence of selected text types. The study recommends that teachers supplement the textbook with additional model texts and genre-based tasks so that students can experience broader communicative purposes and more balanced literacy development.
