Abstract

One of the elements that has the biggest impact of air pollution is lead. Lead can be contaminated through the air, one of which is produced by burning vehicles and releasing lead oxide in the form of dust or particles that can be inhaled into the human respiratory tract. The duration of lead exposure affects air pollution which can harm human health. The aim of this research was to determine blood lead levels in truck drivers in a section of Marunda terminal North Jakarta using the ICP-MS method. ICP-MS has multi-element analysis capabilities and high sensitivity compared to other techniques. This type of research is quantitative descriptive with a cross-sectional research design and data collection using purposive sampling, data collection was carried out in June 2023. Lead examination was carried out at the DKI Jakarta Regional Health Laboratory. The type of specimen used is human blood. Blood samples were collected using an EDTA tube and then measured using an ICP-MS device. The results showed that 17 respondents had lead levels < 2.28 µg/L. Blood lead levels in truck drivers in a section of Marunda terminal North Jakarta were not detected. This shows that there is no lead content in the blood.

Abstract

The persistent issue of low critical thinking skills among students in physics education highlights the limitations of traditional teaching methods, which often emphasize memorization over analytical and evaluative thinking. This study investigates the impact of Case-Based Learning (CBL) on improving critical thinking skills, focusing on six indicators: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. Conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Kediri, Lombok, Indonesia, the study employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. The experimental group received CBL instruction, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. Data collection involved written essay tests scored using a rubric adapted from the Ennis-Weir Critical Thinking Essay Test, with results analyzed through both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive analysis calculated means, standard deviations, and normalized gains (n-gain), revealing significant improvements in the experimental group across all critical thinking indicators, with n-gain scores categorized as high. Inferential statistical analysis using paired and independent sample t-tests confirmed significant differences in critical thinking skill development between the experimental and control groups. The findings demonstrate that CBL fosters critical thinking by engaging students in real-world scenarios, promoting collaboration, and encouraging reflective reasoning. This study concludes that CBL is an effective pedagogical strategy for addressing critical thinking deficiencies in physics education, bridging the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application. The implications suggest integrating CBL into curricula to enhance students’ cognitive skills, equipping them for academic and professional challenges. Future research should explore CBL’s long-term impacts and adaptability to various subjects and educational contexts, ensuring its broader implementation as a transformative teaching approach.

Abstract

Light quality critically modulates the physiology of diatoms, influencing photosynthetic efficiency and metabolite synthesis. This study examines how monochromatic red (620–750 nm) or blue (450–495 nm) light affects the biochemical profiles and pigment production in Navicula sp. versus white light (control). Cultures were grown in sterile f/2 medium, and biomass was tracked via OD680. Biochemical analyses included lipids (Bligh and Dyer method), carbohydrates (phenol-sulfuric acid assay), proteins (Bradford assay), and pigments (spectrophotometric quantification). The growth dynamics were modeled using logistic and Gompertz equations. No significant differences in OD-based growth rates, carbohydrates, proteins, or lipids content were observed with red or blue light compared with the control. However, blue light elevated chlorophyll a levels 4-fold and maximized protein productivity 3-fold, whereas red light enhanced carotenoid content by 20.5-fold. The growth kinetics modeling that best matched the experimental data was the Gompertz modeling (R² > 0.649). These results demonstrate the wavelength-specific regulation of pigment and protein yields, suggesting that tailored light regimes can selectively optimize high-value metabolites in Navicula sp. This approach holds promise for biotechnology sectors prioritizing targeted compound production, such as nutraceuticals or biofuels, by leveraging spectral tuning to enhance metabolic efficiency and predicting particular growth phases using growth kinetics.

Abstract

Burr cells or also known as echinocytes are erythrocytes with short spicules evenly spaced and appear pale in the middle. Burr cells are found in patients with chronic kidney disease, burns, liver disease, uremia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, pyruvate kinase deficiency, post-transfusion, or can be found in the form of artifacts. This study aims to find the range of normal burr cell values in healthy adults and to find the correlation between burr cells with urea, creatinine, cholesterol, SGPT, and gender. The method used is a quantitative descriptive research design with a cross-sectional approach. Samples were taken using a purposive sampling technique, and 54 subjects who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were analyzed for patient characteristics and laboratory results. The results showed a very weak relationship between burr cells with gender, creatinine, and SGPT with a correlation value of <0.1 and a weak relationship between burr cells with urea and cholesterol with a correlation value of >0.1 - <0.3. The normal burr cell value range was obtained with a lower limit value of 0 and an upper limit value of 30.88 burr cells per 1000 erythrocytes.

Abstract

Abstract Navicula sp., an aquatic microalgae species, are numerous and diverse, with high metabolites so they hold great potential in biotechnology. Although it has many advantages, it is often not used in industry. In silica medium, Navicula sp. produces various metabolites depending on their concentration. This research aims to discover how adding silica to the medium affects the growth and production of Navicula sp. metabolites so that cultivation can be carried out at low cost and with maximum results. For 21 days, this experiment was carried out with three concentrations of silica (1; 1.5; and 2 mL/L) and one control (0 mL/L) grown each in a 500 mL culture of Navicula sp. Repetition was done thrice for each measurement parameter; growth speed, biomass production, lipids, carbohydrates, and protein. Medium silica 1.5 mL/L was the optimal concentration for growth speed, biomass production, and carbohydrate production for Navicula sp. (0.083; 0.54; and 0.075 mg/day, respectively). Meanwhile, the optimal silica concentration for lipid and protein production for Navicula sp. were 1 mL/L medium and control medium (0.517 and 0.8 × 10-2 mg/day, respectively). Overall, this research can be used to grow Navicula sp. in producing specific metabolites optimally. AbstrakNavicula sp., spesies mikroalga akuatik, sangat banyak dan beragam dengan metabolit yang tinggi, sehingga memiliki potensi yang besar dalam bioteknologi. Abstract

This paper explores young people’s understanding of political parties amid a crisis of legitimacy and public trust. Political parties are essential pillars of a democratic state, serving crucial functions as instruments of democracy and channels for public aspirations. However, political parties today face a severe trust crisis from society. This crisis stems from widespread disappointment toward politicians, parties, and their elites, which has fueled anti-party sentiment, particularly among young people. The purpose of this paper is to examine the issue of anti-party sentiment and its impact on democratization and the weakening legitimacy of political parties. The phenomenon is analyzed using the theory of anti-party sentiment, which identifies several forms of sentiment among young people, namely the denial of party, the selective acceptance of the party system, the selective rejection of the party system, and the redundancy of party. This study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach following Creswell’s framework. Through this phenomenological approach, the author investigates in depth the experiences of informants who exhibit anti-party sentiment among young people in the era of political digitalization in Cilegon, using interviews and objective observations. This paper discusses how society perceives and interprets the role of political parties in their everyday lives. Keywords: Political party, oligarchy, young people, anti-party sentiment.

Abstract

High salinity is a challenging environmental stressor for organisms to adapt to. In this work, the effects of added NaCl and KCl at various concentrations (0, 100 mM, and 200 mM) for 13 days in the growth medium were investigated in relation to the physiological, morphological, and proximate content of Euglena sp. Utilizing gas chromatography (GC), the amount of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) was determined. Euglena sp. exhibited an obvious decline in growth rate and photosynthetic pigment with increasing salinity. Biomass, protein, carbohydrates had the highest quantities in KCl 100 mM medium, measuring 0.586 ± 0.096 mg/mL, 0.050 ± 0.00017 mg/mL, and 968.091 ± 81.197 mg/mL, respectively. The treatment with 200 mM NaCl had the highest lipid content, with a lipid concentration of 0.42 ± 0.060 mg/mL. After being cultivated in NaCl and KCl at a 200 mM concentration, respectively, the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) declined and the amount of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) increased in Euglena sp. The percentage of PUFAs, such as methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate, did not surpass the European B100 biodiesel standard limit of 12% (weight), despite the wide variety of PUFAs. It showed that the use of NaCl and KCl during salt stress significantly increases Euglena sp. biofuel production. For this reason, cultivating Euglena sp. at high salinity is suitable for producing biofuels.
