Abstract

Curcumin has anti-inflammatory activities, and is formulated into the transethosome (TE) system to improve penetration. The TE system's stability can be increased by incorporating it into a gel dosage form. This study aims to determine the anti-inflammatory activities of curcumin TE gel. Curcumin TE gel was produced in 3 compositions, each having a curcumin content of 10 mg (F1), 40 mg (F2), or 160 mg (F3). On TE gels, organoleptic, viscosity, pH, particle size, and zeta potential were evaluated. The test animals were divided into five groups for anti-inflammatory activity testing. A 1% carrageenan solution was used to induce edema in the animals, and the volume of edema was measured for comparison with p0.05set as significant difference. Curcumin TE gel's physical properties showed a yellow and homogenous gel with viscosity values of 31.173 – 33.626 cPs, pH 4.75 – 4.84, particle size 208.3 – 319.4 nm, and zeta potential (-) 40.03 – (-) 51.12 mV. On anti-inflammatory tests, the edema volume in the group given curcumin TE gel decreased in the 270th minute. According to statistical analysis, the test group had a significant difference (p 0.05) from negative controls and no significant difference (p 0.05) from positive controls in F1 and F2 anti-inflammatory activity. According to these results, the curcumin TE gel exhibited anti-inflammatory activity equivalent to the positive control, while F3 had anti-inflammatory activity better than the positive control.

Abstract

ABSTRACT. Lamotrigine (LTG), classified as BCS class II, is dissolved in cosolvent ethanol (EtOH) or ethyl acetate (EA) to enhance solubility. The objectives of this study are to identify the appropriate formulation of LTG orodispersible film (OF) based on hydroxypropyl methylcellulose Pharmacoat® 603 and polyvinyl alcohol (HPMC P.603/PVA) polymer with EtOH or EA solvency using Central Composite Design in Response Surface Methodology (CCD-RSM). An experimental approach was utilized to investigate the effect of cosolvent amount and HPMC P.603/PVA ratios on the film disintegration time (DT) and folding endurance (FE). The optimized OF-EA composition was 0.46 HPMC P.603/PVA ratio and 3.66% EA with a desirability of 0.817. In comparison, the optimal OF-EtOH composition was 0.87 HPMC P.603/PVA ratio and 6.19% EtOH with a desirability of 0.843. The characteristic data for the optimal formulas include: OF-EtOH: weight variation 92.05±4.81 mg, thickness 0.15±0.01 mm, DT 36.11±1.48 sec, and FE 310.33±5.03; and OF-EA: weight variation 93.72±1.50 mg, thickness 0.16±0.00 mm, DT 26.73±3.32 sec, and FE 470.6±37.44. Based on the OF-EtOH FE, the HPMC P.603/PVA ratio had a greater effect compared to the amount of EtOH (p<0.05). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated that the amount of EA had a greater impact compared to the HPMC P.603/PVA ratio, with statistical significance (p<0.05). The EtOH cosolvent was preferable to EA based on the LTG solubility and OF dissolution profile. LTG OF had favorable physicochemical properties and showed promise as a rapid-dissolving formulation for therapeutic purposes. Keywords: Central composite design, cosolvency, disintegration time, folding endurance, oral film.

Abstract

The pulp of robusta coffee (Coffea canephora L.) is known to contain chlorogenic acid compounds that have potential as antioxidants. The content of this compound can be utilized as an active ingredient in cosmetics such as clay masks. The main component that affects the physical properties of a clay mask is the clay base. This study aims to develop a clay mask formulation from robusta coffee pulp extract with variations in the concentration of base combinations, namely bentonite and kaolin, and to observe their effects on the physical properties of the dosage form. The base concentration variations used were 20% (F1), 25% (F2), and 30% (F3) with a bentonite to kaolin ratio of 1:2. The evaluation of physical properties included organoleptic tests, homogeneity tests, pH tests, spreadability tests, adhesion tests, viscosity tests, and drying time measurements. The evaluation results showed that all clay masks were homogeneous with pH values ranging from 5.15 ± 0.04 to 5.29 ± 0.12, spreadability values of 4.60 ± 0.22 to 4.74 ± 0.37 cm, adhesion values of 0.82 ± 0.11 to 1.16 ± 0.15 seconds, and viscosity ranged from 5501 ± 670.22 to 7567.67 ± 220.30 mPa.s, and drying time ranged from 20.60 ± 0.39 to 25.34 ± 0.80 minutes. Results of the antioxidant activity test indicated that the clay mask made from robusta coffee pulp extract is a powerful antioxidant with IC50 values of 28.31 ± 4.72 to 30.45 ± 5.69 ppm. Variations in the concentration of the clay mask base significantly (p < 0.05) affected the viscosity and drying time of the dosage form. In summary, the clay mask formulations satisfied the essential physical criteria and showed promise for cosmetic application. F3 emerged as the leading formula, exhibiting the highest antioxidant capacity, evidenced by its lowest IC₅₀ value.

Abstract

The outer skin of robusta coffee bean (Coffea canephora) was a processing waste containing phenolic compounds with antioxidant role. This activity is relevant when used in cosmetic preparations such as peel-off masks, which form a thin elastic layer on the facial surface and are easy to remove. One of the important ingredients of peel-off masks is plasticizer such as sorbitol characterized by flexibility, not easily fragile, and elasticity. Therefore, this research aimed to develop peel-off formula from robusta coffee skin by influencing sorbitol variations on the characteristics of masks in the form of gel. A total of six gel masks formulas were made with sorbitol variations of 10%, 12.5%, and 15%. The two types of gel base used were Carbopol 940 and HPMC (Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose), at concentrations of 0.25% and 4%, respectively. The results showed that sorbitol variations affected the physical characteristics (p > 0.05) but did not influence antioxidant activity of robusta coffee skin extract peel-off masks.

Abstract

One of the problems related to the issue of damage to aquatic ecosystems due to environmental pollution in Indonesia is the use of surfactant-based detergents, which make it difficult for people to degrade naturally. Making environmentally friendly liquid detergent products made from MES surfactants can be a learning experience for students using the low-carbon STEM project-based learning model concept. This model is a more practical approach to developing creative thinking skills and is part of a learning community for continuous learning. This service activity is collaborative between universities and schools in applying STEM to chemistry learning. This activity is an alternative form of learning chemistry to stimulate students' fascination and interest in learning material, which is often considered challenging. The activity method uses group simulation and experimental methods to optimize material delivery. Based on evaluation data that was paired t-tested, there was a significant increase in students' understanding of the material (p<0.05) with an increase in the average test score from 40.44 to 89.56. Apart from that, most of the activity participants also showed active participation and enthusiasm.
