Abstract

Despite extensive research on servant leadership and positive discipline, no existing framework integrates both into a coherent model for elementary educational leadership, particularly in collectivist cultural contexts. This study develops and empirically validates a discipline-based servant leadership framework for elementary school principals. Using a qualitative approach with systematic narrative review of literature from Scopus and Web of Science (2021–2024), followed by an instrumental single case study at an Indonesian elementary school involving 15 informants (principals, teachers, staff, and students), analysis was conducted through framework analysis using ATLAS.ti for network visualization. The framework consists of five integrated dimensions: transformative service, constructive discipline, structured empowerment, moral accountability, and continuous development. The central theoretical contribution is the conceptualization of “structured compassion” as an integrative principle resolving the dichotomy between service orientation and organizational accountability through the integration of Self-Determination Theory, Compassionate Leadership Theory, and Paradoxical Leadership Theory. Empirical validation identified 72 unique codes confirming framework implementability, while network analysis revealed strong cross-dimensional interconnections. The framework advances the literature by reconciling Indonesian cultural values of gotong royong and kerukunan with contemporary educational accountability requirements, offering a transferable model for collectivist educational contexts globally.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of kiai (Islamic boarding school leader) leadership on character building of alumni from non-Salafi Islamic boarding schools using a phenomenological approach. Through in-depth interviews and thematic analysis with six phases of Braun and Clarke, the research involving one alumni participant identified four fundamental mechanisms: transformative learning based on exemplary leadership integrating knowledge transfer and character formation through role modeling, long-term internalization of religious values resistant to contemporary social change, capacity for value adaptation in plural society without compromising basic principles through critical inclusivism, and character sustainability through non-verbal modeling and informal dakwah strategies. Kiai leadership manifests transformational leadership principles uniquely by minimizing verbal rhetoric while maximizing concrete behavioral demonstration, emphasizing moral consistency over personal charisma, and prioritizing internal transformation over external compliance. The formed character is holistic, integrating cognitive dimensions of deep textual understanding, affective dimensions of value internalization, and psychomotor dimensions manifested in consistent social behavior. This research enriches transformational leadership literature by demonstrating that leadership effectiveness is contextual rather than universal, and contributes to character formation theory by identifying specific role modeling mechanisms in intensive learning environments, producing deep and sustainable character transformation.

Abstract

Abstract: This qualitative phenomenological study investigates transformational leadership practices in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) through the lens of teachers' lived experiences. The research was conducted at Pesantren X with six experienced teachers serving as primary participants through purposive sampling. Data were collected via in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's six-phase thematic analysis with ATLAS.ti version 24 software. The study identifies four major themes: (1) Presence as Pedagogy, whereby leaders cultivate spiritual transformation through active participation in daily religious rituals and consistent physical supervision; (2) Accessible Authority, demonstrating how leaders balance traditional Islamic authority with democratic accessibility mechanisms; (3) Value Transmission Through Practical Responsibility, showing how students develop character virtues (amanah, integrity, and trustworthiness) through authentic management responsibilities; and (4) Restorative-Investigative Conflict Resolution, integrating Islamic justice principles (musyawarah and collective learning) with contemporary restorative practices. Findings reveal that transformational leadership in pesantren operates distinctly from Western organizational models, emphasizing relational presence, moral exemplarity, and communal value-formation. This study provides culturally-grounded empirical evidence enriching transformational leadership theory within Islamic educational contexts, offering actionable insights for pesantren administrators and informing educational policy development in Indonesian secondary education. Abstract

This study aims to presents an adaptive education planning model integrating data-driven school mapping, vocational alignment with industry needs, and collaborative governance to enhance educational access and workforce alignment in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, we conducted in-depth interviews with 16 informants, including educational policymakers, consultants, and industry representatives. The findings indicate that strategic school placement, guided by demographic data, addresses educational equity by prioritizing underserved areas. Vocational programs aligned with local labor demands equip students with industry-relevant skills, enhancing job absorption and reducing workforce migration. Collaborative governance fosters stakeholder engagement, allowing educational institutions to adapt to socio-economic changes. Practical implications include better resource allocation in underserved regions, improved job market alignment through vocational education, and stronger local economies through talent retention. This model supports Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) by creating a responsive, community-centered educational framework that promotes sustainable socio-economic development across Indonesia.
