Abstract

This study aims to identify shrub insect species around the Bodogol Nature Conservation Education Center (PPKA Bodogol), Bogor, West Java. The research uses an exploratory descriptive approach by sampling through the free roaming method on shrub vegetation. Specimens were collected using sweeping net and hand collecting techniques from morning to noon, then analyzed descriptively based on the number of individuals, the number of species, and the composition of the order and family. The results of the study recorded 20 species from 8 orders, with the dominance of Orthoptera (7 species) and Lepidoptera (4 species). The families Acrididae and Scarabaeidae are the most abundant taxons, while Xylotrupes gideon is the species with the highest number of individuals. The dominance of these families and species indicates that the vegetation of the PPKA Bodogol bush provides habitat conditions that support herbivorous and detritivore insects that play an important role in energy flow and ecosystem stability. These findings show that shrub vegetation has a strategic role as a functional habitat for insects and can be used as basic data in planning, management, and conservation of insect biodiversity in conservation areas.

Abstract

Microplastic waste has polluted Indonesian waters, especially at Sepanjang Beach. Microplastics that are not handled properly can enter the digestive tract of aquatic animals, one of which is gastropods. The presence of microplastics must be identified in the gastropod digestive tract, considering that gastropods are also a food ingredient. Sampling was done by purposive sampling and quadratic transects. The length of the transect used is 50m perpendicular to the beach with a quadrant plot measuring 1x1 m. In each plot, 1 individual was taken for each species found. Sample preparation using 15 ml of 10% KOH solution and incubated for 1 night. Optical analysis of microplastics using a stereo microscope at 40x magnification. The most microplastics were found in the Turbo setosus species with 701 particles. The most common form of microplastic found in Gastropods and Bivalvia in the sample was fiber with a total of 2204 particles. Microplastics were also found in seawater on the beach with the form of fiber being the most commonly found, namely as many as 553 particles.

Abstract

Ecology learning presents complex challenges due to its interdisciplinary nature, requiring students to develop both critical and computational thinking skills. However, these higher-order cognitive abilities must be intentionally cultivated through innovative pedagogical strategies. This study developed and evaluated a digital storytelling–based learning medium designed to enhance students’ critical and computational thinking skills in ecology. The research involved 120 seventh-grade students from a public Islamic junior high school in Bekasi, Indonesia, and employed a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control group design. The control group received instruction through interactive PowerPoint presentations, while the experimental group used the digital storytelling medium; both groups followed a guided inquiry model. The developed media were validated by experts, yielding average scores of 74.28% (language), 77% (content), and 80% (design), indicating strong validity and feasibility. Instruments measuring critical and computational thinking were also validated and demonstrated high reliability (α = 0.83; KR-20 = 0.89). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and MANOVA. Results revealed significant improvements in both skills across groups, with the experimental group exhibiting greater consistency and higher final performance. Evaluation and decomposition emerged as the strongest indicators of critical and computational thinking, respectively. MANOVA confirmed a statistically significant multivariate effect (p = 0.033) of digital storytelling. These findings demonstrate that digital storytelling is a valid, feasible, and effective medium for fostering higher-order thinking in ecology learning and should be integrated into 21st-century science education

Abstract

Students are required to develop essential 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking and biological literacy, to effectively navigate challenges in the globalization era. It is known that the results of PISA 2022 and several studies show that these skills in students are still very low. However, traditional learning models often fail to cultivate these competencies, necessitating the implementation of innovative instructional approaches. This study investigates the impact of the STEM-based flipped classroom model on enhancing students' critical thinking skills and biological literacy. A quasi-experimental research design was employed, involving 120 students from grade VII of junior high school. The experimental group received instruction through the STEM-based flipped classroom approach, while the control group followed a traditional learning model. Learning activities were carried out for eight lesson hours where one lesson hour lasted 40 minutes.  Students' critical thinking skills were assessed using 11 reasoned multiple-choice questions, and biological literacy was measured through 7 reasoned multiple-choice questions. Data analysis was conducted using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). The results of Pillai's Trace, Wilk’s Lambda, Hotelling’s Trace, and Roy’s Largest Root tests indicated a significant effect (p < 0.001, α = 0.05), confirming that the STEM-based flipped classroom model substantially enhances students' critical thinking and biological literacy. These findings suggest that incorporating STEM-based flipped classroom strategies can effectively improve students’ critical thinking and biological literacy, supporting more engaging and meaningful learning experiences. Educators and policymakers should consider adopting this model to better equip students with the competencies needed in the 21st century.
