Abstract

Learning strategy is an important key for successful learning process. Inappropriate learning strategy causing student to get bored easily, more passive, and loss focus on the learning topic. ARIAS (Learning Strategy of Assurance, Relevance, Interest, Assessment, and Satisfaction) is a learning strategy encouraging student to learn biology in fun and interesting ways by which higher learning result may be achieved. This research was conducted in MAN 8 Jakarta on November 2012 using an experimental method with posttest-only group design. An overall sample of 60 grade 10 students was selected by simple random sampling. They were divided into experimental and control groups consisted of 30 students. Instruments used in this research classified as multiple-choice questions. Based on the result, Average students cognitive learning result in experimental group treated by puzzle and control class treated by video display showed 74.03 and 61.93, respectively. Prerequisite testing of Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and F-test showed a normal and homogenous data. The hypothesis testing conducted by t-test at confidence level of 95% showed that t value > t table at 1.91 > 1.67, which rejected the null hypothesis. Therefore, it can be concluded that application of ARIAS learning strategy with puzzle has better effect on students cognitive learning result than with video display.

Abstract

Conceptual understanding in biology is crucial for addressing global and complex issues. However, students often struggle to grasp biological concepts, thus requiring the support of interactive and engaging learning media. This study aims to develop and evaluate a gamification-based learning approach using PowerPoint media to enhance conceptual understanding of biodiversity, specifically the Felidae family. The research method used in this study is Educational Design Research (EDR) with the Hannafin and Peck (1988) model. Hannafin and Peck model is structured around three distinct phases i.e. needs assessment, design, and development/implementation. Each phase includes evaluation and revision. Data analysis includes assumption tests such as normality and homogeneity tests, as well as effectiveness tests including paired sample T-tests and normalized gain analysis. The subjects of this research are 10th-grade students and Biology teachers at SMAN X Jakarta Timur. The gamification-based PowerPoint learning media (FaunaPlay) is highly feasible to be used as a learning tool and is effective in enhancing the conceptual understanding of 10th grade high school students on the topic of biodiversity, specifically the Felidae family. This study recommends implementing the gamification-based learning media (FaunaPlay) in classroom instruction to enhance conceptual understanding of biodiversity (Felidae). The media can be utilized by teachers as a practical tool during teaching and learning activities. Furthermore, it provides a valuable reference for researchers to develop similar gamified learning media aimed at improving educational quality.

Abstract

Learning is a form of communication that is the basis for achieving information by students. The learning model that can improve students' activeness and learning outcomes is Problem Based Learning (PBL). The relevance found between the principles of the PBL model and the Biology learning process makes many studies linking the application of PBL with the achievement of cognitive learning outcomes. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on cognitive learning outcomes in biology using quantitative methods with meta-analysis techniques by reviewing 15 journal articles. The effectiveness of the PBL model on cognitive learning outcomes used the Effect Size (ES) formula. Based on the results obtained from the Effect Size test, the results obtained with moderate criteria ranged from 0.51 to 1.00 so it means that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model has a positive impact on biology learning outcomes for students.
