Abstract

This study aims to explore and evaluate the effects, contribution levels, and interrelationships of debate-based civic education on students’ critical thinking (CT), problem-solving (PS), and decision-making (DM) skills within the context of border conflict resolution simulations. The study employed a quantitative approach using an experimental method involving 120 participants whose competencies were assessed. Data were collected using open-ended tests and analyzed through inferential statistics, including simple linear regression, t-tests, R-square, and correlation analyses. The findings revealed that debate-based civic education significantly influenced critical thinking (R² = 21.5%), problem-solving (R² = 32.3%), and decision-making (R² = 18.6%). However, the correlations among the independent variables (CT, PS, and DM) were found to be weak. The results emphasize the applied importance of civic education practices in cultivating 21st-century skills among students in higher education institutions.

Abstract

Learning models play a vital role in maximizing educational outcomes. Therefore, it is essential for teachers to thoughtfully select and implement instructional models that align with effective teaching practices. However, the success of any model also relies heavily on the presence of a solid support system, such as well-prepared teaching materials and student books, which help make learning more meaningful and engaging. The development of the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) model stems from the necessity to create educational experiences that are not only academically sound but also culturally appropriate, particularly in diverse classroom settings. By embedding local cultural values into lessons, CRT aims to enhance student engagement, reinforce cultural identity, and promote civic understanding. This study aimed to develop a CRT model for use in Pancasila Education that is valid, practical, and effective in improving the learning outcomes of elementary school students in Padangsidimpuan City. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, using the ADDIE model which includes five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The study was conducted at MIN 1 Padangsidimpuan, involving fourth-grade students as the sample. Data collection techniques included observation, testing, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was performed both quantitatively, using SPSS software, and qualitatively. The findings indicate that the CRT model and its supporting materials are highly valid and practical, making them easy for teachers and students to use. Furthermore, the model was found to be very effective based on students' learning outcomes across two test phases.

Abstract

Developing students’ social character is a central goal of elementary education. This research aims to develop and validate a CRT model integrated with the local cultural values of poda na lima to strengthen students’ social character in PPKn. The research adopted the Plomp educational design research model, encompassing the stages of preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment. The participants were 106 fourth-grade students from a public elementary school in Padangsidimpuan. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, questionnaires, classroom observations, and learning outcome tests, and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The results indicate that the developed model achieved high levels of validity, practicality, and effectiveness in improving students’ social character. The integration of poda na lima values within the CRT framework provides a culturally grounded pedagogical strategy that aligns learning with students’ sociocultural backgrounds. The study also produced several supporting instructional materials, including a CRT model book, RPP, BG, BS, and LKS. This research contributes to the advancement of culturally responsive pedagogy by embedding indigenous cultural values into instructional design, offering an innovative approach to strengthening character education in elementary schools.
