Abstract

This research is motivated by initial observations at SD Negeri 153 Kayulaut, Mandailing Natal Regency, indicating low reading comprehension abilities among fifth-grade students in the 2025-2026 academic year. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of the Cooperative Learning model in improving the reading comprehension ability of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 153 Kayulaut. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was used in this research, involving 42 fifth-grade students divided into two groups: an experimental group (21 students) who received treatment with the Cooperative Learning model, and a control group (21 students) who continued with conventional learning. Data collection techniques included tests (pre-test and post-test), observation, and documentation. Data were analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, and t-tests to determine the significance of differences between groups. In Cycle I, the average reading comprehension score for the experimental class was 59.62 with a classical completeness of 42.86%. This figure increased sharply in Cycle II to 69.14 with a completeness of 61.90%, and reached 77.19 with a classical completeness of 90.48% in Cycle III. This increase far surpassed the control class, which only showed an average of 53.24 (33.33% completeness) in Cycle I, 61.43 (47.62% completeness) in Cycle II, and actually decreased to 56.76 (14.29% completeness) in Cycle III, after a temporary increase. In addition to the improvement in learning outcomes, observations of experimental class student activity also showed consistent improvement, from an average of 58.75% in Cycle I to 72.5% in Cycle II, and reaching 85% in Cycle III. The research results indicate that the application of the Cooperative Learning model significantly improves the reading comprehension ability of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 153 Kayulaut, Mandailing Natal Regency, Academic Year 2025-2026

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Take and Give learning model in improving reading learning outcomes in understanding descriptive text materials in grade IV students of State Elementary School 078 Panyabungan, Mandailing Natal Regency. The background of this study departs from the problem of low student learning outcomes in understanding descriptive texts, which is caused by the lack of active interaction in learning and the dominance of lecture methods that are still teacher-centered. For this reason, it is necessary to apply a learning model that is able to activate students in a participatory manner. The Take and Give model is a cooperative learning strategy that emphasizes the exchange of information between students. Each student is given a card containing learning materials, then shares information with fellow students in turns. This model is believed to train communication skills, foster self-confidence, and improve understanding of reading content through the process of repetition and re-explanation. This type of research is experimental research with a One Group Pretest-Posttest design. The research sample was all 28 fourth-grade students of SD Negeri 078 Panyabungan. The instruments used included multiple-choice learning outcome tests and student activity observation sheets. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that there was a significant increase in student learning outcomes after the Take and Give learning model was implemented. The average posttest score for students was higher than the pretest score. In addition, student learning activities also increased, as seen from their active involvement in discussions and exchange of information during the learning process. The evaluation also showed that most students achieved scores above the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM), and the classical learning completion rate reached more than 85%

Abstract

This research was motivated by the low level of students' understanding of fiction texts in the fourth grade of SD Negeri 152 Hutaraja, Mandailing Natal Regency. Preliminary observations revealed that most students had difficulty understanding story elements such as characters, plot, setting, and moral messages. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Discovery Learning model in improving students’ understanding of fiction texts. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group. The sample consisted of two classes: class IV A as the experimental group and class IV B as the control group, each consisting of 20 students. The experimental class was taught using the Discovery Learning model, while the control class was taught using conventional methods. The results showed that the average pre-test score in the experimental class was 62.3, which increased to 81.9 in the post-test, indicating an improvement of 19.6 points. Meanwhile, the control class improved from 62.8 to 72.2, with a gain of 9.4 points. The t-test analysis of the post-test data indicated that the t-value of 7.726 was greater than the t-table value of 2.10092 at the 5% significance level. This means that there was a significant difference in learning outcomes between the experimental and control groups after the treatment was given. Both classes had previously met the requirements for normality and homogeneity tests. These findings indicate that the Discovery Learning model is effective in improving students' comprehension in fiction text learning. The active, exploratory, and discovery-based learning process encouraged students to be more engaged in understanding the content and structure of stories, while also enhancing their curiosity and critical thinking skills. This model has also proven to create a more enjoyable and meaningful learning atmosphere, fostering collaboration and developing empathy through fictional stories

Abstract

The problem underlying this research is the low storytelling skills of students, as seen from the results of daily tests which show that only 5 out of 25 students (16.6%) achieved scores above the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM) of 70. The learning model used previously tended to be conventional and did not involve students actively. This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is carried out in two cycles. Data were collected through observation of teacher and student activities and storytelling skills tests (pretest and posttest). In cycle I, the average pretest score of students was 64.8 with only 2 students (8%) completing the task. After learning using the role-playing model, the posttest results showed an increase: 12 students (48%) completed the task and 13 students (52%) had not completed the task, which means there was a 40% increase in completion compared to the initial conditions. In cycle II, there was a more significant increase. Of the 30 students, 21 students (70%) achieved completion, and 9 students (30%) had not completed the task. Overall, the increase in completion from pre-action to cycle II was 61.4% (from 8% to 70%). Meanwhile, the average teacher activity increased from 79% in cycle I to 84% in cycle II, indicating an increase of 5%. This increase was influenced by the teacher's efforts to improve learning strategies by encouraging students to be active, confident, and creative in storytelling. The results of the study showed that the application of the role-playing model was able to significantly improve students' storytelling skills. This method provides an active, enjoyable learning experience and encourages full student participation, both as players and spectators who actively provide responses. Thus, the role-playing model is effectively used as a learning strategy in improving elementary school students' storytelling skills, especially in learning Indonesian

Abstract

This study examines the reinterpretation of the Ingkung offering tradition among Javanese people born in Sumatra, particularly in Karang Anyar Village, Simalungun Regency. The study aims to answer three research questions: (1) What are the symbolic meanings of Ingkung offerings as interpreted by the community? (2) How do these offerings function as a medium of communication with God and ancestors, a symbol of harmony, and a carrier of moral values? (3) How has the Ingkung tradition been adapted in the diaspora context? This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic framework. Data were collected through participatory and non-participatory observations conducted over three months and in-depth interviews with 12 participants, including community leaders, traditional leaders, and local residents. Document analysis was also used to support the findings. The results reveal that Ingkung offerings function as a complex symbolic system. The Ingkung chicken, shaped in a prostrating position, symbolizes submission and devotion to God; tumpeng rice represents the cosmic mountain and harmony; while fruits signify fertility and prosperity. These elements collectively convey life messages related to gratitude, balance, and social solidarity. The study also finds that the tradition has undergone adaptation in the Sumatran context while maintaining its core philosophical values. This study contributes to the understanding of cultural reinterpretation in diaspora communities and demonstrates the applicability of Peirce’s semiotic framework in analyzing traditional rituals in contemporary socio-cultural settings.
