Abstract

Abstract. Nasution MA, Najmi N, Hermi R, Lubis F, Lisdayanti E, Saputra F. 2025. Influence of reef cover classes on functional diversity of reef fish in the Banyak Islands Marine Nature Park, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 4346-4362. Coral reefs are critical marine ecosystems that are increasingly threatened by human and environmental pressures, prompting research into how habitats shape biodiversity. This study explored how seven reef cover classes: reef slopes, sheltered reef slopes, reef crests, reef flats, plateaus, backreef slopes, and lagoons, influence reef fish functional diversity in the Banyak Islands Marine Nature Park, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Using underwater visual censuses across 20 sites with 60 belt transects (250 m² each), we surveyed 131 reef fish species at 3-12 m depths. We measured four functional diversities of reef fish: Functional Richness (FRic), Functional Divergence (FDiv), Functional Evenness (FEve), and Rao’s Quadratic entropy (RaoQ). Bayesian multivariate models revealed that reef slopes, sheltered reef slopes, and reef crests significantly influenced functional diversity, explaining 2-55% of variance, average 28.5%. Reef slopes showed the strongest effects, positively influencing FEve (posterior probability: 0.95) and RaoQ (posterior probability: 0.99), indicating balanced trait distribution and enhanced functional diversity in structurally complex habitats. However, reef slopes negatively affected FDiv (posterior probability: 0.89). Reef slopes notably boost RaoQ and FEve, reflecting balanced trait distribution and diverse ecological roles. The effects on functional richness and divergence were less pronounced, indicating limited trait range expansion. This study reveals that certain reef formations play a crucial role in maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems, which is vital for conservation efforts in less-than-ideal reef environments.

Abstract

Aceh Jaya Regency is one of the regencies located in the southwestern part of Aceh. Geloina mussels are a type of mussels that have habitat characteristics in coastal areas. The research component includes an assessment of the habitat of the Geloina Mussel, especially environmental components such as the condition of the living habitat substrate and its growth pattern. Bioecological assessments need to be carried out regularly, so that basic information about Geloina is obtained in the development of management in the field of aquatic ecology and fishery resource management. This research was conducted in Aceh Jaya Regency from September to December 2023. Sampling based on a 1 x 1 meter size plot. Each location point is repeated 3 times. Analyze the data using growth pattern equations. The results showed that the growth pattern of Geloina sp. shellfish was classified as positive allometric with a regression coefficient value of 2.521, determination coefficient (R2) of 0.96, correlation coefficient (r) of 0.98 and condition factors showing values ranging from 0.86 – 1.41.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Mangrove rehabilitation requires multi-stakeholder governance to prevent planting programs from ending as one-day ceremonial activities. This community service program aimed to improve stakeholder understanding, conduct mangrove planting and replanting, map pentahelix actor contributions, and formulate a post-planting maintenance framework in Peunaga Cut Ujong Village, Meureubo District, West Aceh Regency. The program was implemented on 8 June 2026 through site assessment, stakeholder coordination, environmental education, planting practice, evaluation, and follow-up planning. A total of 100 participants represented academia, government, business, community, and media. Educational evaluation used pre- and post-tests completed by 25 purposively selected respondents, with five respondents from each pentahelix element. Five hundred Rhizophora apiculata seedlings were used for planting in unvegetated areas and replacing seedlings lost from earlier interventions. The aggregate understanding score increased from 57% to 92%, a gain of 35 percentage points. Role mapping showed that academia led initiation, education, and evaluation; government provided seedlings, legitimacy, and technical coordination; communities contributed site-based knowledge and field implementation; media documented and disseminated the activity; while the business sector's post-planting contribution remained insufficiently documented. The program generated measurable educational and operational outputs and an initial governance framework covering role allocation, plot inventory, local responsibility, reporting channels, and monitoring at months 1, 3, 6, and 12. Ecological success cannot yet be concluded without seedling survival and growth data. Keywords: Coastal Rehabilitation, Environmental Education, Governance, Mangrove, Pentahelix.
