Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Project-Based Learning (PBL) on enhancing the interest and speaking proficiency of elementary EFL students. Employing a mixed-methods case study design, the research was conducted with grade four students at Kalam Kudus III Christian Elementary School, Jakarta. Data were gathered through speaking tests, interviews, and questionnaires to evaluate the effectiveness of PBL, identify implementation challenges, and assess student engagement. The findings reveal that: (1) students’ speaking skills significantly improved following the intervention; (2) primary challenges included limited vocabulary and initial difficulties in peer collaboration; and (3) the approach effectively boosted students’ motivation and interest in English communication. Consequently, PBL serves as a viable pedagogical strategy to foster active oral participation in young learners.

Abstract

The rapid integration of digital technology in English Language Teaching (ELT) has created new opportunities for learner-centered and culturally responsive instruction; however, speaking skills remain underdeveloped in many English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. This study addresses this gap by articulating teachers’ design and pedagogical needs for technology-integrated folktale-based English materials, particularly to support speaking skills, learner autonomy, and cultural awareness. Employing a qualitatively driven needs analysis within the Define stage of a Research and Development (R&D) framework, the study involved a questionnaire administered to 38 junior secondary school English teachers, complemented by semi-structured interviews with nine teachers from urban, suburban, and rural contexts. Descriptive statistics were used to identify dominant needs, while thematic analysis provided interpretive depth. The findings reveal five priority needs: technology integration as a core instructional component, reinforcement of cultural values through folktales, speaking models and structured speaking practice, preference for visual and simple design, and the need for adaptation of existing materials. The study highlights that teachers prioritize pedagogically meaningful, user-friendly, and culturally grounded materials over technologically complex systems. These findings contribute theoretical, pedagogical, and methodological insights for developing context-sensitive, speaking-oriented digital English materials grounded in local cultural narratives.

Abstract

Urgensi penelitian ini terletak pada kebutuhan untuk mengidentifikasi strategi pembelajaran yang efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa sebagai bagian penting dari kompetensi abad ke-21, sekaligus menjawab tantangan rendahnya literasi sains di Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji hubungan antara kemampuan berpikir kritis dan motivasi belajar IPA siswa kelas lima sekolah dasar dipengaruhi oleh Problem Based Learning. Telaah menggunakan rancangan eksperimen semu tipe pretest-posttest dengan kelompok kontrol non-ekuivalen yang melibatkan 56 siswa dari dua sekolah dasar negeri di Jakarta Timur. Alat pengumpulan data berupa tes kemampuan berpikir kritis yang meliputi tujuh aspek identifikasi masalah, pemberian argument penghubungan informasi, evaluasi berdasar bukti, penarikan simpulan, pengajuan solusi, dan interpretasi dampak—serta angket motivasi belajar IPA dengan sepuluh indikator menggunakan skala Likert lima tingkat. Metode Analysis of Covariance digunakan untuk mengolah data dengan bantuan Statistical Package for the Social Sciences versi 25.0. Temuan analisis memperlihatkan bahwa Problem Based Learning memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan pada kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa. (F=10,636; p=0,002<0,05; partial η²=0,167), di mana kelompok eksperimen mengalami kenaikan 27,3% sementara kelompok kontrol hanya 8,9%. Sebaliknya, penerapan model ini tidak menunjukkan dampak signifikan pada motivasi belajar IPA siswa (F=1,433; p=0,237>0,05). Uji korelasi mengungkapkan hubungan positif intensitas sedang antara kemampuan berpikir kritis dan motivasi belajar IPA (r=0,452; p<0,01). Disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan berpikir kritis dapat dikembangkan secara efektif melalui Problem Based Learning melalui proses penyelidikan nyata dan strategi penyelesaian masalah sistematis, namun peningkatan motivasi belajar IPA membutuhkan strategi pendukung tambahan dan waktu implementasi lebih lama untuk menciptakan perubahan substantif pada dimensi afektif siswa.

Abstract

This research aims to prove that there is an influence of the use of interactive animation media and the syllable method in improving the initial reading ability of class I students in Indonesian language lessons. The method used in this research is the experimental method, the experimental class and control class were chosen not randomly so that the design in this research is in the form of a Nonequivalent (Pretest and Posttest) Control Group Design. The sample in this research was 153 students. The instrument used in this research was a reading ability test including pretest and posttest, interviews and documentation. Meanwhile, regarding the data that has been obtained from the research results, it is then analyzed and processed statistically using the SPSS version 29.0 for window application, while the data analysis used is a 2-average test analysis and N-gain analysis. The results of the research that has been carried out show that the treatment in the form of learning using interactive animation media and the syllabic method where the average N-Gain score is 0.54  is included in the medium category, so the effectiveness of using interactive animation media and methods syllables are quite effective to be applied in initial reading learning, whereas if we refer to the 4 reading assessment indicators, the results show that the 4 reading indicators include the ability to read letters with an N-Gain value of 0.79 (high), reading syllables with an N-Gain value 0.69 (medium), reading words with an N-Gain value of 0.43 (medium), and reading sentences with an N-Gain value of 0.23 (low).
