Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of interaction between teachers and 4th-grade students with speech delay in English language learning, analyze the influence of such interactions on students' speaking abilities, and identify the instructional challenges faced by teachers in inclusive classrooms. A qualitative case study approach was employed at Binari Green Primary School in Tarakan, North Kalimantan. The subject was a 10-year-7-month-old male student diagnosed with speech delay by a psychologist. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and pre- and post-assessments. The findings revealed that teacher-student interactions were consistent and supported by multimodal strategies such as visual aids, modeling, guided questioning, and collaborative activities. These structured interactions positively influenced the student's oral English proficiency by reducing affective barriers, enhancing confidence, and providing necessary scaffolding. However, challenges were encountered, including limited verbal responses, public speaking anxiety, and the need for individualized teaching approaches. The study concludes that fostering inclusive, adaptive, and student-centered interactions is crucial for promoting English language development in students with speech delay.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of YouTube educational videos on students’ reading comprehension in an EFL classroom. A quantitative quasi-experimental design was implemented involving 74 twelfth-grade students of SMAN 5 Kaur, divided into an experimental class and a control class. The experimental group received reading instruction supported by YouTube educational videos, while the control group was taught through conventional methods. Reading comprehension tests were administered as pre-tests and post-tests to measure improvement. The results showed that the experimental group achieved a significant increase in reading comprehension scores from 62.97 to 91.08, whereas the control group improved from 60.54 to 75.14. The Wilcoxon test further confirmed a significant difference in post-test scores between both groups (p = 0.000), indicating that the use of YouTube educational videos had a more substantial impact than traditional teaching. These findings suggest that video-based learning enhances students’ understanding by providing visual support, clearer explanations, and increased engagement during reading activities.

Abstract

As we know, writing is one of the most difficult skills for EFL learners. This skill emerges with challenges with vocabulary, grammar, and structural coherence. This study investigates the impact of collaborative writing on the writing performance of fifth-grade elementary students compared to individual writing. A quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design is conducted by using collaborative activities such as chain story, word construction, and comic strips. The writing performance was assessed using Jacob’s ESL Composition Profile across five key aspects. The result of the research showed that collaborative writing significantly improved students’ organization area (p = 0.003) and mechanics (p = 0.046). However, statistical analysis also showed no significant difference in content (p = 0.058), vocabulary (p = 0.059), and grammar (p = 0.414). The findings show that even though collaborative strategies effectively help young learners in structuring texts and improving punctuation usage, these strategies may not immediately enhance linguistic accuracy or enrich vocabulary without further treatment. This study also offers empirical evidence distinguishing which specific writing skills are most responsive to collaborative activity in elementary settings.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of the Hemingway Editor application and teacher feedback on students’ writing performance at SMAK Santo Paulus Jember. The study employed a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design with multiple measurements. Fifty-four twelfth-grade students participated and were assigned to an experimental group (n = 27) and a control group (n = 27). The control group received teacher feedback only and was assessed twice (pre-test and final post-test). The experimental group was assessed three times: pre-test, post-test 1 after using the Hemingway Editor only, and post-test 2 after receiving the combined treatment of the Hemingway Editor and teacher feedback. Students completed a procedure-text writing task, and their work was scored using an analytic rubric adapted from Jacobs et al. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize performance at each measurement point. Normality was examined using the Shapiro–Wilk test, and the analysis proceeded with non-parametric tests when the normality assumption was not fully met. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test indicated a statistically significant improvement in writing performance across the relevant measurement points, and the between-group comparison at the final measurement point showed a meaningful difference favoring the experimental treatment. Overall, the findings suggest that the Hemingway Editor application can support students’ writing development, and its impact is strengthened when combined with structured teacher feedback.

Abstract

This study addresses persistent challenges in elementary classroom practices, particularly low student activeness and weak learning discipline that hinder effective instructional processes. These issues are closely related to how teachers design and implement instructional actions within classroom management strategies. The study aimed to analyze the profile of teachers’ instructional actions in planning learning activities, managing classroom conditions, regulating student behavior, and fostering student participation to enhance activeness and learning discipline. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving classroom teachers at SD Negeri Kenaran 3. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis of lesson plans and instructional records. Data analysis was conducted through systematic stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with credibility ensured through triangulation of sources and techniques. The findings reveal that teachers’ instructional actions were generally well-structured at the planning stage, particularly in organizing learning objectives and instructional activities. Classroom management strategies emphasizing clear rules, positive reinforcement, and preventive approaches contributed to improved learning discipline. Moreover, interactive instructional actions, such as questioning strategies, group discussions, and varied learning activities, played a significant role in increasing student activeness. However, the study also identified constraints related to time limitations and differences in student characteristics that affected the consistency of implementation. Overall, effective instructional actions integrated with purposeful classroom management strategies were shown to support the development of a more active and disciplined learning environment. The results provide practical implications for teachers and schools in strengthening classroom-based instructional practices.
