Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of social networks in facilitating access to capital and resources for start-up entrepreneurs in Indonesia. As a literature review employing a qualitative approach, the research utilizes secondary data sourced from Google Scholar between 2003–2024, selecting 19 articles. Descriptive analysis explores how social networks, encompassing personal relationships, business communities, and digital platforms, assist start-up entrepreneurs in overcoming challenges related to accessing capital, knowledge, and collaboration opportunities. Findings indicate that social networks play a critical role in creating funding opportunities through interpersonal connections, leveraging crowdfunding platforms, and establishing strategic connections via business communities and social media. Relevant case studies highlight the success of start-up entrepreneurs in Indonesia who have utilized social networks to expand their businesses and overcome operational challenges. However, the study also finds that the effectiveness of social networks depends on digital literacy, relationship-building capabilities, and community support. Digital literacy training, strengthening business communities, and educating entrepreneurs on leveraging social networks should be prioritized to support the growth of start-up entrepreneurs in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze price variations at both the producer and consumer levels (1), investigate price transmission elasticity (2), and assess the degree of integration in the vertical corn market between producers (farmers) and consumers (retailers) in East Java Province (3). The analysis of market integration serves as vital input for the government in formulating agricultural development policies within the research area. Conducted as a quantitative study, this research utilized secondary data, specifically monthly time series data spanning from January 2018 to December 2021. The data included corn price information at the producer level sourced from the Agriculture and Food Security Office of East Java Province, and consumer-level corn price data obtained from the East Java Province Industry and Trade Office (SiSKAPERBAPO website). The data underwent descriptive quantitative analysis. The findings reveal that the coefficient of price variation at the producer level is 8.9 percent, indicating high fluctuation and instability, whereas at the consumer level, it stands at 2.8 percent, signifying lower and stable fluctuations. The price elasticity (et) of corn for the years 2019-2021 was calculated as 0.0033 (inelastic), -0.2029 (inelastic), and 2.6359 (elastic), respectively. These results suggest that the rate of price change at the consumer level exceeded that at the producer level (an et value > 1 indicates inefficient corn marketing). The analysis of corn market integration in East Java reveals weak integration between producer and consumer markets in both the short and long terms. This indicates imperfect transmission of market information by market participants, particularly large traders who play a significant role as price setters.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the decline in Indonesia's coffee exports and to formulate strategies to enhance these exports. Using a quantitative methodology, data from 1991 to 2021 were analyzed via regression analysis employing SPSS software. The independent variables considered included coffee production volume, harvested coffee land area, the GDP of the United States, and the exchange rate of the Indonesian Rupiah to the US Dollar. The results indicate that Indonesia's coffee production and harvested area significantly influence export volumes. The regression model developed demonstrated a moderate explanatory power with an R² value of 53%, indicating that the model explains 53% of the variance in coffee exports. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test confirmed the model's significance, highlighting that the included variables collectively impact coffee exports. Partial t-test analysis revealed that the harvested area, producer coffee prices, and exchange rates are significant factors. The study concludes that enhancing the quality and competitiveness of Indonesian coffee, improving infrastructure, and adopting supportive government policies are crucial strategies to boost coffee exports. These efforts must address the challenges posed by global market dynamics, competition, and environmental factors to ensure the sustainable growth of Indonesia's coffee sector.

Abstract

Rice fields managed by farmers or agricultural business actors provide cultivation benefits and environmental services. Research in Japan shows that the environmental benefits of rice fields reach 90%, much higher than its role as a cultivation medium which is only 10%. This study aims to examine the economic value of rice fields as a whole in three main aspects: (1) its value as a rice field medium, (2) its value as an environmental service, especially flood control, and (3) a comparison of these economic values. The method used is economic valuation through the Replacement Cost Method (MBP) and the calculation of farming profits. MBP is used to calculate the economic value of rice fields that do not yet have a market price. Meanwhile, the calculation of farming profits is to assess the cultivation benefits produced by rice fields. The results of the study show that (1) the economic value of rice fields as a rice field medium is IDR 24,750,000 per hectare per year. (2) As a provider of flood control, its economic value reaches IDR. 150,276,000 per hectare per year, and the conversion of 350 hectares could result in an annual loss of Rp. 52.6 billion. (3) The comparison of the economic value between rice fields as a planting medium and as a flood controller is 1:6, highlighting the important environmental benefits provided by rice fields

Abstract

Over the past three decades, a rapid increase in pesticide usage has played a central role in transforming the landscape of modern agriculture. The objective of this research is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of changes in pesticide usage from 1990 to 2020, emphasizing the complexity of global trends, environmental impacts, and pesticide trade dynamics. This study utilizes agri-environmental indicators and relies on the latest statistical data from FAOSTAT in 2022. The applied research method is a quantitative approach based on secondary data. The research findings indicate that global pesticide usage reached 2.7 million tons in 2020, with an average of 1.8 kg/ha. Although reaching a stable level, pesticide trade experienced a significant increase, particularly in the disinfectant category. Over the past three decades, there has been an approximately 50 percent increase in pesticide usage, especially in herbicides. Per capita analysis shows a relatively stable consumption rate, although there is an increase in pesticide usage per unit of agricultural land. Regional levels reveal significant disparities, with Asia as the largest contributor, Europe implementing strict policies, the Americas having the highest usage rates, Oceania experiencing low trade, and Africa applying low usage rates. Some countries, such as Saint Lucia, exhibit high pesticide application rates per unit of agricultural land, and this variation requires in-depth analysis to understand influencing factors. To mitigate negative impacts, international cooperation, the development of sustainable technologies, and a profound understanding of pesticide applications are necessary. Therefore, more effective and sustainable agricultural policies need to be designed to protect the environment and human health.

Abstract

This research delves into the implementation of social security programs, particularly focusing on tobacco farm workers in Jember regency, Indonesia. Despite the mandatory nature of the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, many tobacco farm laborers remain uncovered, posing risks to their social and economic well-being. Utilizing a quantitative research methodology, the study employs questionnaires and statistical analysis to understand the factors influencing participation in the BPJS Employment program. Findings reveal that variables such as Program Urgency, Farmers' Knowledge, Program Benefits, Farmers' Expectations, and the Role of Local Government collectively explain 67.5% of tobacco farmers' participation. Notably, Program Urgency and Program Benefits significantly impact participation, highlighting the vital role of social security in providing financial assurance against job-related risks. Moreover, active involvement of the Local Government is essential in fostering farmers' interest and engagement in the program. These findings underscore the significance of social security programs for tobacco farm workers, emphasizing the need for government support and facilitation to enhance program participation and ensure the welfare of vulnerable laborers.
