Abstract

Abstract: Before the technology was invented, long-distance communication used to rely on written letters, but now with advanced technology, it can be easily done through a stable internet connection on a smartphone. However, the convenience of online dating applications can be misused by irresponsible people, so policies and security measures must be implemented to protect users' privacy and comfort. Cases that occur in the form of fraud, extortion, sexual harassment cause mental health problems. Based on these problems, the author designed a social campaign that aims to educate people in Palembang City to be wiser in using social media. The author conducted a case study by applying the design thinking design method as data analysis to overcome these problems and using the 5W + 1H method (what, why, who, where, why, how). The design media to be used are digital education books, starter dating boxes for women and men, other information media such as posters and Instagram, and supporting media such as notebooks, Tumblr bottles, classic mirror, making, stickers, classic clocks, aromatherapy candles, and calendars.

Abstract

Abstract: The Electronic Information and Transaction Law was first passed through Law No.11 of 2008 before finally being revised with Law No.19 of 2016. Based on the results of the questionnaire distributed, it can be concluded that many teenagers in the city of Palembang still do not know about the ITE Law. For this reason, it is necessary to introduce the ITE Law in order to prevent and avoid crime when accessing the internet and social media. In overcoming this problem, the author uses the design thinking method which consists of several stages, namely emphatize, define, ideate, prototype and test. After going through several stages, producing the main media in the form of illustrated books that summarize various information to introduce the ITE Law with attractive illustrations and bright colors adjusting the target target. The supporting media created in the form of digital and print posters, Instagram feeds, X-Banners, catalogs, stickers, tote bags, keychains, note books, standee mascots, and T-shirts. The creation of these media is expected so that the public is aware of the importance of knowing and implementing the ITE Law.

Abstract

The study investigates semiotic patterns of emotional representation in children’s book cover design using Charles Sanders Peirce’s icon-index-symbol framework. The research examines ten book covers from The Feelings Series by Trace Moroney, a children’s picture book series that consistently addresses basic emotions in early childhood. The study aims to identify how emotional meanings are constructed through visual signs and to examine the dominant semiotic strategies employed across covers. A descriptive qualitative method was employed was applied through structured visual observation of key cover elements, including character facial expressions, body gestures, color palettes, typography, and background composition. Each visual element was treated as a unit of analysis and independently coded by two coders according to Peirce’s classification of iconic, indexical, and symbolic signs. Inter-coder reliability was assessed using percentage agreement, resulting in an initial agreement rate of 90%, with remaining discrepancies resolved through reflective discussion grounded in operational definitions and contextual visual analysis. The findings reveal a consistent cross-cover semiotic pattern in which indexical signs such as body posture, gesture, gaze direction, and compositional emphasis play a dominant role in constructing emotional context, while iconic signs, particularly facial expressions, function as primary cues for immediate emotional recognition. Symbolic signs, including color conventions, typographic treatment, and series identity, operate to stabilize and reinforce emotional meanings through culturally familiar visual codes. These three sign types work in an integrated manner to form a cohesive and readable system of emotional representation across the series. The study demonstrates that Peirce’s semiotic framework can be systematically operationalized as and analytical tool in visual communication design research, particularly within the context of children’s emotional literacy. The identified semiotic patterns provide practical insights for designers and publishers in developing children’s book cover that effectively communicate emotions in ways that are visually clear, developmentally appropriate, and emotionally supportive.

Abstract

Mind Mapping Training to Support the Brainstorming Process in Visual Communication Design Development  Abstract Community service activity aims to improve creative and structured thinking skills in the visual communication design process through mind mapping training as a brainstorming technique based on design thinking. The main problem faced by the community partner was the participants’ limited ability to systematically develop ideas and organize design concepts, causing the design process to become less directed and conceptually weak. The activity was conducted in a hybrid format involving 30 participants from the DKV AKAP Community through stages of needs identification, material presentation, mind mapping practice, concept development, and visual design evaluation. The results showed that 25 participants considered the activity very beneficial, while 5 participants considered it beneficial. In addition, 23 participants stated that their creativity and idea development skills improved after applying the mind mapping technique, while 7 participants stated that they still required further development. In terms of participation enthusiasm, 26 participants attended the activity until completion, while 4 participants joined the sessions late. The participants’ design works also demonstrated improvements in conceptual clarity, visual idea relationships, and communication strategy development. Based on these findings, the application of mind mapping as a brainstorming technique is considered effective in supporting a more systematic, creative, and communicative visual communication design process.

Abstract

Pindang Borgibor is a traditional dish from South OKU, South Sumatra, combining freshwater fish with tempoyak-based sauce. Its popularity remains low, particularly among Generation Z in Palembang, who tend to prefer modern cuisine and digital lifestyle trends. This project aims to introduce Pindang Borgibor more effectively, with the expectation of increasing its appeal among Generation Z in Palembang. Additionally, this promotional effort seeks to support the preservation of local culinary heritage and contribute positively to the regional creative economy rooted in culinary culture. The design method employed is the Design Thinking approach, which consists of five key stages: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Data were collected through observations, interviews, surveys, and literature reviews related to traditional culinary promotion strategies. The project resulted in various forms of promotional media, including an innovative instant pindang product (Self Cooking Box), promotional videos, and visual print media, all designed to align with the information-consumption habits of Generation Z. Through a strong visual approach and the strategic use of social media, this initiative is expected to improve the recognition and appreciation of Pindang Borgibor, helping it become part of an evolving culinary identity while supporting cultural preservation and the growth of the regional culinary-based creative economy.

Abstract

This study aims to understand how the visual elements of the Telaga Batu Inscription shape visual perception and spiritual meaning within the cultural context of the Sriwijaya Kingdom. The research applies Rudolf Arnheim’s visual perception theory, which defines seeing as an active mental process that organizes balance, direction, and structure to generate meaning. The method used is descriptive qualitative with visual analysis of three main elements of the inscription, namely stone, water, and serpent. Data were collected through literature review and visual documentation, then analyzed to identify principles of balance, rhythm, and unity that construct spiritual experience within the ritual of oath-taking. The results show that the Telaga Batu Inscription was designed with strong visual awareness to evoke a sense of sanctity and royal authority. The stone symbolizes stability and eternity, water functions as a medium of purification, and the seven-headed serpent represents cosmic protection. These elements together form a spiritual visual communication system that reinforces the values of loyalty and power in Sriwijaya. The findings demonstrate that visual perception theory can be applied to interpret ancient artifacts as visual communication designs carrying profound spiritual and cultural values.
