Abstract

This research aims to produce bricks by adding few layer graphene (FLG) and studies the effects of firing temperature and graphene concentration on the characteristics of the produced bricks. The produced bricks were tested their compressive strength, porosity, morphology using the scannning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The brick was made by adding the few layer graphene to the clay, then mixed them and casted in size (5x5x5) cm3. The samples then dried at room temperature for a week, and fired in furnace for 1 hour at the temperature variation of 600 °C, 800 ºC, and 1000 °C with graphene concentration variations of 10 mg/ml, 20 mg/ml and 30 mg/ml. The results showed that the highest compressive strength (9 MPa) and lowest porosity (6.1%) was exhibited by brick synthesized using graphene concentration of 30 mg/ml and the firing temperature of 1000°C. The Scannning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis results showed that the addition of graphene reduced the porosity of the brick. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis results showed that a diffraction peak of few layer graphene at 25.41º and the graphene did not influenced the crystal structure of the brick. This research showed that the increase in firing temperature and concentration of graphene made the structure of the brick increasingly dense. The few layer graphene could improve mechanical strength of the brick by reduce the stress concentration and prevent the development of the cracks. Keywords : bricks, concentration, compressive strength, few layer graphene, firing, graphene, porosity

Abstract

Key component that determining the efficiency of a solar thermal collector is a thin layer on the surface of the collector that absorbs solar radiation selectively and convert it into heat energy or commonly called solar selective absorber (SSA). Solar selective absorber can be synthesized using sol-gel dip coating method. The purpose of this research is to know the effect variation molar of copper nitrate-cobalt nitrate and number of dipping-drying cycles to absorptance copper-cobalt coating. Pieces of aluminum with size 2x4 cm were cleaned using a solution of phosphoric acid 10% wt at temperature ±50oC for 10 minutes. Sol precursor prepared by mixing copper nitrate and cobalt nitrate in ethanol and the addition of propionic acid as a catalyst and complexing agent. The mixture was stirred for 2 hours at room temperature. The coating were synthesized by varying molar percursors (ratio 1:1) 0.1M, 0.25M, 0.4M and number of dipping-drying cycles 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 6x, 8x and 10x, then annealed at temperature 550 oC for 1 hour. Reflektance spectra in the area of UV-Vis-NIR show that increased cycles of dipping-drying cycles (which increases the thickness of the coating) increase the value of absorptance (α), as well as the increase in the concentration of sol precursors. The results showed that the highest absorptance value found in coatings which was synthesized using mixture copper nitrate and cobalt nitrate molar variations 0.1 M at 10x cycles (dyeing and drying) with absorptance (α) = 88.69%. Further characterization showed emitance values (ε) = 12.9%. Morphological analysis showed that the surface structure of the coating was composed of nanometer-sized particles that form the porous structure. XRD analysis showed there was no change of formed crystal structure of copper oxide and cobalt oxide by increasing temperature. Adhesion test showed the adhesi between the coating and the substrate can be categorized as very strong (5B scale ASTM D 3359)Keywords : aluminum, coating, solar selective absorber and sol-gel dip coating

Abstract

Synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HAp) from blood cockle shell (Anadara granosa) by hydrothermal process has been successfully done. The aim of this research was to get theoptimum process condition and also to investigate the influence of the Ca/P mole ratio and the synthesis temperature toward HAp characteristic. The powder of blood cockles shell wascalcined to get CaO which then was reacted with diammonium hydrogen phosphate by using water as solvent. Hydrothermal process was done by closed system in order to avoid thesolvent be lost while heating up above the solvent’s boiling point. The samples then were characterized by using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared), XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), andSEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). The functional groups were observed in the FTIR of the synthesized HAp are phosphate (PO4 3-), hydroxyl (OH-), carbonate (CO3 2-), and hydrogenphosphate (HPO4 2-). These functional groups indicate that HAp has been formed. XRD data showed the main peaks for HAp that strenghtened the truth of FTIR characterization. SEM was used to observe the morphology of the synthesized HAp that consisted of agglomerates. Through analysis of the EDXA (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis), the Ca/P mole ratio of the synthesized HAp could be counted where the result is 2. EDXA and SEM analysis were done together due to EDXA and SEM are one device. The best condition in this synthesis occured at Ca/P mole ratio 1,60 and the synthesis temperature 160oC.Keywords: blood cockle shell; hydroxyapatite; hydrothermal

Abstract

The magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4) are very promising nanomaterials to be applied as drug delivery due to their excellent superparamagnetic, biocompatibility and easily modified surface properties. Those properties are influenced by the structure and size of the material which can be controlled by studying the evolution of crystal growth. The purpose of this research is to study the evolution of crystal growth of magnetite nanoparticles in the hydrothermal system and determine the crystal growth kinetics using the Oriented Attachment Growth model. Magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized using a hydrothermal method from FeCl3, citrate, urea and polyethylene glycol at 210?C for 1 - 12 hours at a various concentration of FeCl3 (0.05 M, 0.10 M, and 0.15 M). The characterizations were conducted by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Particle size analyzer (PSA), and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). The XRD difractogram indicated that the magnetite was begun to form at 3.5 hours synthesis. The crystallinity and the crystal size of magnetite rose with reaction time. The diameter of magnetite crystals was in the range of 9.4-30 nm. Characterization by TEM showed that the particles were formed from a smaller particles which were then agglomerated. The PSA characterization showed that the distribution of diameter size enlarged with the enhancement of concentrations. VSM result showed that the magnetite nanoparticle has superparamagnetic properties. The magnetite crystal growth can be fitted by the Oriented Attachment Growth model with an error of 29%.

Abstract

Abstract

Various types of waste are found in TPA Muara Fajar Timur, Rumbai District, Pekanbaru. One of the waste that does not decompose is styrofoam. If styrofoam is not handled seriously, it will have an impact on the environment and endanger the surrounding community. Styrofoam waste contains polystyrene foam which contains hazardous materials for health and the environment. For this reason, efforts should be made to handle the styrofoam waste, namely by recycling styrofoam into useful and economical products. One of the uses of Styrofoam waste is making latex glue. Latex glue is a product that is widely used by the community so that if it is produced it will be able to meet the needs both for themselves and for the needs of the community. Latex glue is made from styrofoam by adding toluene and surfactants (sodium lauryl sulfate / SLS) or by adding gasoline to Styrofoam. The results obtained were that the community could understand and be able to make latex glue. The results of the success questionnaire show the high interest and benefits of this activity. This shows that this activity has been successfully implemented in Muara Fajar Timur Village, Rumbai District, Pekanbaru.
