Abstract

This research aims at measuring students’ Translation Quality of Expressive Language in Poetry from English into Indonesian Made by English Department Students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The qualitative research was used in this research.  The population of this research was the sixth semester English Education students of Universitas Negeri Padang. There were 20 students selected as the sample through the purposive sampling method. Data were collected through a translation test. There were two raters involved in analyzing the quality of the translation result. Findings revealed that the translation quality produced by students are included as accurate with score 2.76, acceptable with score 2.66 and readable with score 2.73.

Abstract

Most previous researchers found out that students have difficulties in transalting some expressions from a source language to a target language. This research has a purpose to reveal correlation between the students’ habit in watching English movies and their ability in translating English idiom expressions. The population and sample of this research was the third year who are taking translation subject in their fifth semester of academic year 2021 in English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and translation test. The result of this research showed that the r-calculated (0.549) > r-table (0.333). The hypothesis was accepted by the calculation of t-test which is t-calculated (3.773) > t-table (1.692) with df = n-2 (33) in the level of significance 0.05. The research hypothesis stated that there is a significant correlation between students’ watching habits and their ability in translating English idioms was accepted.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the types of errors made by the English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang in translating tourism brochure from Bahasa Indonesia into English. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were the translation of tourism brochures of the  entitled “Lembah Harau, Indahnya Minangkabau” and “Destinasi Wisata Alam yang Masih Alami di Sumatera Barat” done by English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang who have taken Indonesia English Translation Subject. The data were collected using a test and were analyzed using the error analysis. The results of the study indicate that there are four types of errors  which  error  of devition of  meaning  is  the most error frequently   committed   by   the   students   in   their translation   with   the   frequency   of   180 times   (63,15%). Omission of meaning (26.66%) is the second, while the error of addition and the error of invention  of  meaning  are  the  least  error  found  in  the students’ translation.

Abstract

This study investigates the collocational errors made by English Department students at Universitas Negeri Padang in their Indonesian–English translations. Collocational competence is essential for producing natural and fluent language, especially in EFL contexts. Using a corpus-based method and descriptive quantitative design, 21 student translations were analyzed for lexical and grammatical collocation errors using AntConc, COCA, BNC, OZDIC, and the Oxford Collocations Dictionary. A total of 45 errors were identified: 22 lexical and 23 grammatical. The most frequent error type was verb + preposition, suggesting significant L1 interference and insufficient collocational instruction. Pedagogical implications include the need for explicit teaching of collocations, integration of corpus tools, and contrastive analysis between English and Indonesian. The findings support the integration of collocational awareness into translation pedagogy for improved learner fluency and accuracy.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at MTsN 3 Solok Selatan based on Nation’s theory, which includes three aspects: form, meaning, and use. The participants were 30 students from class VII.1 selected through purposive sampling. The vocabulary test consisted of 30 questions, with 10 items for each aspect. This study used a quantitative descriptive method to measure students’ mastery levels. The results showed that the average score in the form aspect was 53.67%, in the meaning aspect was 52.33%, and in the use aspect was 49.33%. These findings indicate that students are more familiar with the form of words, such as spelling and pronunciation, but still struggle to understand word meanings and use them correctly in context. The lowest achievement was found in the use aspect, suggesting that students need more practice in applying vocabulary in real communication. Based on the results, it is recommended that teachers use teaching strategies that integrate form, meaning, and use, such as puzzles, games, and contextual speaking tasks to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. Future researchers are encouraged to explore effective vocabulary learning methods to support students’ improvement, especially in the use aspect.

Abstract

This study investigates EFL students’ perceptions of self-created glossaries as a strategy to enhance vocabulary mastery for translation tasks in an Indonesian-English translation class at Universitas Negeri Padang. The research focus on four aspects of perception, namely attractiveness, perceived effectiveness, relevance, and perceived motivation, and also explores the strategies students used in developing their glossaries. The participants were 25 students enrolled in the 2024/2025 Indonesian-English Translation class who completed weekly glossary assignments. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 20 closed-ended and one open-ended item and analyzed using descriptive quantitative and thematic approaches. The results indicate that students generally held positive perceptions of the self-created glossaries (M = 2.94 on a 4-point scale). Students who applied more varied and systematic strategies, such as contextual vocabulary selection and organized structuring, reported higher levels of perceived usefulness and motivation. These findings suggest that self-created glossaries can effectively support vocabulary learning, and enhance students’ preparation for translation activities.
