Abstract

In bilingual societies, people are able to speak many languages. Commonly, they mix various languages while doing a conversation. This study aims to find out the type of code-mixing used by Fathia Izzati’s YouTube channel. This research used a theory by Hoffman (1991) about three types of code-mixing. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The data were taken from three videos of YouTube Fathia Izzati in 2018 and 2019. The result shows that from 89 data collected, there are two types out of code-mixing that have been found from three types of Hoffman theory. They are Intra-sentential code-mixing (98.88%), involving a change of pronunciation (1.12%), while intra-lexical code-mixing is not found from the data. By the finding, it can be concluded that the types of code-mixing dominantly used by Fathia in her videos is intra-sentential of code-mixing. The speaker’s educational background and parenting patterns greatly influence her speaking style combining the two languages. The reason Fathia speaks like that because she is comfortable and used to mix two languages when speaking. Sometimes there are Indonesian vocabs that are not match for use when speaking, so the speaker is more comfortable mixing with English vocabs and vice versa. Furthermore, the impact of the personal background of a person influenced the speaker to do code-mixing.

Abstract

This research aims at examining the types of directive speech act in the Green Book movie, and politeness strategies employed by the main characters. The purpose of this research is to find out the type of directive speech act used by main characters and what the types of politeness strategies used in directive speech acts as function in Green Book movie. The data were directive utterance that uttered by Tony Vallelonga and Dr. Donald Shirley and the source of the main data in this study was Green Book movie and its script. This research belonged to a descriptive-qualitative method. The results of the study show that there were five kinds of directive speech act and four types of politeness strategies. The amount totals of data are 163. In directive speech act, there are 39 data of commanding, 36 data of requesting, 56 data of questioning, 24 data of suggesting, and 8 data of forbidding. While in politeness strategies, they applied bald-on record 77 data, positive politeness 71 data, negative politeness 13 data and bald-off record 2 data. Directive speech act in the form questioning is commonly used by main character and bald on record is the mostly used in politeness strategy which is a strategy where the utterances are uttered clearly and concisely.

Abstract

Impoliteness is a bad attitude and occurred when the speaker face attacks the hearer and the hearer receives the face attack from the speaker or both of them. Categories of impoliteness based on (Culpeper, 2016) are bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mocking politeness and withhold politeness. This research is aimed to find out type impoliteness used by the male and female characters in Wolf of the Wall Street movie. This research is descriptive comparative. The data were collected from all texts which are transcribed from spoken ones used by the male and female characters in the movie Wolf of the Wall Street. The result showed that the total of impoliteness is 46, with 31 impoliteness from male characters and 15 impoliteness from female characters. Then, in the category of purpose of power, there were only 13 purpose of power in male characters, but none in female characters.

Abstract

This study analyzed the transitivity process in the novel The Borrowers. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative.This study focused on transitivity which is a part of the Ideational meaning in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL).According to Halliday, the three main components in transitivity are the process itself, the participants involved in the process and circumstance. There are six process of transitivity, namely Material, Mental, Relational, Behavioral, Verbal and Existential. The data in this study were divided into two, which were utterances and narrations. This study only focused on chapter one. The source of data in this research wasa novel The Borrowers written by Mary Norton. This study aims to find out the dominant process found in the novel. The instrument used was the researcher herself and assisted by the analysis tableto show the dominant process found in the novel.In analyzing the data, the researcher used several steps, which were reading the text, identify the data and put it in data card, calculated the data, and making conclusion.There are 269 clauses of transitivity found in the chapter one of the novel The Borrowers. The process that appears mostly in chapter is Relational: Attributive with 67 clauses/ 24.90%. Research on transitivity has been done a lot before. Nonetheles, there is a difference between between the new research and the old one. Other researchers who also examined transitivity in fiction text were (Kurnia, 2018; Koutchade, 2017; Rashid, 2016). Most researchers in fiction text only examined short story, and the data results that obtained are all the clause of the full story. However, this research only focuses on the beginning chapter in fiction text.

AbstrakTujuan dalam penelitian ini untuk (1) mengidentifikasi jenis-jeniseufemisme yang digunakan oleh laki-laki dan perempuan yang adadi kerinci (2) mendeskripsikan perbedaan jenis-jenis eufemismeyang digunakan oleh laki-laki dan perempuan yang ada di kerinci.Dalam penganalisaan makalah ini, penulis melakukan penelitiansederhana dengan cara mewawancarai penutur asli bahasa Kerincilaki-laki dan perempuan yang ada di Kerinci. Penelitian initermasuk penelitian secara deskriptif yang berpijak pada fakta danrealita yang terdapat dikerinci, dan dalam penganalisaan ini penelitimenemukan 50 euphemisme yang digunakan oleh masyarakatkerinci tersebut, yang terdiri dari 25 eufemisme di tindakankejahatan, 15 eufemisme di sifat-sifat tidak baik, dan 10 eufemismedi bagian tubuh.Kata Kunci: euphemism, types of euphemism, Kerincinese speaker

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk (1) mengidentifikasi tipe- tipe pasifbahasa inggris (2) menjelaskan bentuk- bentuk proses pemasifan yangmuncul dalam berita- berita utama pada setiap kolom yang terdapat padawww.time.com berdasarkan analisis tipologi. Data dari penelitian ini 113kalimat pasif. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan metode deskriptifkualitatif. Temuan penelitian yaitu terdapat 6 tipe pasif, tipe personal pasifyang paling mendominasi diantara tipe pasif yang lain. Sedangkan bentukpemasifan yang paling dominan adalah copular be+ past participle dari 24bentuk cara pemasifan yakni 31,87 %. Serta 20 kalimat yang memilikiagen (backgrounding) dan 93 kalimat yang tidak memiliki agen(foregrounding), yakni sekitar 82, 30 % dari 113 data yang diperoleh. Halini membuktikan bahwa tulisan bahasa inggris didominasi sekitar 80 %oleh agentless (Dixon, 1991: 298).Kata kunci: passivization, typological analysis, time.com, headline news,voice, foregrounding, backgrounding, oblique.

Abstract

Penelitianinimembahaspembentukan kata daribahasagaulamerika yang terdapatdalam film remaja. Tujuandaripenelitianiniadalahmenemukanjenispembentukan kata slang apasaja yang terdapatdalamduajenis film remajayaitufilm”Camp Rock”dan film “Juno” berdasarkanteoripembentukan kata dari O’Grady.Selainitupenelitianinijugabertujuanuntukmembandingkanjenispembentukan kata daribahasagauldalamkedua film tersebut. Metodepenelitian yang digunakanadalahmetodedeskriptif. Dari hasilanalisis, karakter-karakterdaridua film tersebutmenggunakanbanyaktipepembentukan kata, seperticoinage, internal change, clipping, affixation, derivation, compounding, blending and acronym. Hasil yang ditemukanpada film “Camp Rock”,terdapat 32 data. Jenispembentukan kata yang paling banyakditemukanadalahclipping, diikuticoinage.Setelahitu, internal change ,kemudianacronym danaffixation sertaback formationSedangkanpada film “Juno”,terdapat 71 data. Abstract

 This research is aimed to identify (1) What are the word formation process of the slang word found in the lyrics of “Young Lex” songs (2) What are the common characteristics of slangs found in the lyrics of “Young Lex” songs. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method.This research paper usedGeorge Yule (2006) processes of word formation. The researcher found 6 types word formation in slang word in the lyrics of Young Lex among others blending, compounding, clipping, borrowing, coinage and acronym and 1 theory of Elissa Matiello, Variation.The data were collected by listening to 9 songs by Young Lex and reading the lyrics of the songs. There were 27 slang of variation, 6 slang of blending, 11 slang of clipping, 4 slang of compounding, 4 slang coinage, 17 slang borrowing and 6 slang of acronym.

Abstract

This research studies about politeness strategies and translation technique in Inglorious Basterds movie and its Indonesian translation. The purposes of the research are to know the kinds of politeness strategies which is used by the main characters in directive utterance and how does the translator translate the politeness strategies of directive act into subtitle. The data of this research are Inglorious Basterds movie and its Indonesian translation. This research is done by descriptive qualitative method, and focus on a single case. The research findings show that there were 4 types of politeness strategies and 12 translation techniques in 168 data. Based on the frequencies, the strategies applied in the data are Bald on Record 86 times (43%), Positive Politeness 57 times (29%), Negative Politeness 33 times (17%), and Off Record 22 times (11%).

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengidentifikasi tipe kata-kata tabuyang terdapat dalam lirik lagu pada album Eminem, (2) untuk mendeskripsikanmakna dari kata-kata tersebut sesuai dengan liriknya dan (3) untuk menganalisisfungsi kata-kata tabu yang ditemukan pada album Eminem. Jenis penelitian iniadalah penelitian deskriptif. Data penelitian ini adalah kata-kata tabu yangterdapat pada lirik lagu dalam album Eminem. Dari hasil penelitian, penelitimenemukan bahwa kata-kata tabu lebih banyak digunakan pada album Eminemyang berjudul Bad Meets Evil yang terbit pada tahun 2011 dibandingkan padaalbum Eminem yang berjudul Slim Shady LP yang terbit pada tahun 1999. Darihasil penelitian, peneliti menemukan bahwa tipe kata-kata tabu yang terdapatdalam album Eminem ada tiga yaitu; kata-kata yang berhubungan dengan anggotatubuh, kata-kata yang berhubungan dengan hal sexual, dan umpatan.Key words: types, slang, words, lyrics
