Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Contemporary batik design research has extensively addressed the preservation of traditional motifs, the transformation of regional icons, and the utilization of digital technologies. However, studies that specifically translate the religious architectural elements of the Great Mosque of Gresik into batik scarf designs remain limited, particularly those that integrate reflections on creative practice, structured evaluation, and prototype realization. This study aims to develop the Agung Prasaja batik scarf design based on the architecture of the Great Mosque of Gresik and to elucidate its contribution to culture based textile design. The method employed is Practice led Research, supported by descriptive quantitative evaluation. The research stages include visual context exploration, architectural element mapping, motif stylization, digital composition development at 160 × 35 cm, design evaluation, and the realization of three selected batik tulis (hand-drawn batik) scarf prototypes. The evaluation instrument utilized a 1–5 scale with 11 indicators grouped into the aspects of aesthetics, symbolic cultural legibility, application potential, and user appeal. The evaluation involved 30 informed design assessors/users. The findings produced eight primary motif units and ten design alternatives. The three designs prioritized for batik tulis scarf prototype realization were Agung Prasaja 5, Agung Prasaja 4, and Agung Prasaja8. The findings indicate that design strength is determined not solely by the beauty of motifs but also by visual hierarchy, the legibility of architectural symbols, and suitability for the scarf format. The contribution of this research lies in offering a measurable, reflective, and applicable model for transforming local religious architecture into contemporary textile design, thereby supporting the development of Gresik batik products.

Abstract

Abstract

This practice-led study explores the transformation of the contrasting visual characteristics of Minakjinggo and Damarwulan costumes from the Banyuwangi Janger performance into a ready-to-wear deluxe Muslim fashion collection. The study aims to describe the exploration, design development, realization, and presentation of the collection. The creative process followed four stages: exploration, design, realization, and presentation. During exploration, the visual characteristics of the two characters were identified through silhouette, color, garment structure, and decorative elements. Thirty alternative designs were developed for adult women, adult men, and girls. Following a design review by two fashion experts, three designs were selected for realization. The collection integrates Minakjinggo’s bold ornamentation with Damarwulan’s structured and balanced appearance through layered forms, contrasting colors, pompons, dangling sequins, and laser-cut Gajah Oling motifs. The works were presented at the 37th UNESA Annual Fashion Show Madjadhikara 2025, where the girls’ design received the Best Kids Fashion Design award in the Muslim fashion category. The study demonstrates how costumes from local performing arts can be transformed into contemporary Muslim fashion without reproducing the traditional costumes literally.

Abstract

Batik, as an Indonesian cultural heritage, holds significant potential to support sustainable fashion, particularly through the exploration of nature-based motifs and the use of more environmentally responsible materials. However, its application as an institutional identity marker remains limited, especially in integrating sustainability values with the visual character of an institution. This study aims to develop a sustainable institutional batik design by adopting the stylization of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) as a symbol of ecological growth, combined with visual elements of Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa). The Practice-Led Research method was employed across four stages: pre-design, design, realization, and presentation and evaluation. The study produced ten Unesa batik designs, from which three were selected as the best based on expert assessments using four criteria: functionality, cultural identity and expression, aesthetics, and creativity. The findings indicate that Batik Andaru Tirta UNESA effectively represents both the ecological character and institutional identity of the university. Future research may extend to material testing, the exploration of border motifs, and prototype refinement to support more sustainable production practices.

Abstract

The development of modest wear trends in Indonesia is currently still dominated by modern global motifs that tend to be uniform, necessitating design innovations capable of exclusively representing the values of local cultural arts. This creative research aims to describe the design process, product realization, and presentation techniques of a Muslim family festive wear collection inspired by the visual assertiveness characteristics of the Jaranan Turonggo Yakso Dance from Trenggalek Regency. The method employed in this artistic creation is the Practice-Led Research approach, which encompasses four operational stages, namely: (1) exploration or pre-design of the idea concept, (2) visual draft design of the collection, (3) sewing product realization, and (4) presentation or dissemination of the works. The results of this creative research are a three-piece premium collection intended for a family target market (adult male, adult female, and young boy), utilizing a harmonious palette of emerald green, ivory, and black. The expressive character of the dance's whip strokes is transformed into decorative details using structural cording textile manipulation techniques, combined with asymmetrical hanging overskirt panels and rhythmic teardrop sequin accents. The final stage of work presentation was conducted through product dissemination at the Grand Jury Event and the Annual Fashion Show "MADJADHIKARA" 2025 as a means of commercialization and preservation of traditional culture through modern fashion products.
