Abstract

This study aims to improve the ability of students with mild intellectual disabilities to recognise the letters A–Z through the use of letter cards as a visual aid in early reading instruction. The study used a classroom action research (CAR) design, which was carried out in two cycles, each comprising the stages of planning, implementation of actions, observation, and reflection. The research subjects consisted of three students with mild intellectual disabilities in Grade VII at SLB Negeri Manekat Niki-Niki. Data were collected through observation, performance tests, and documentation of learning activities, then analysed descriptively, qualitatively, and quantitatively by comparing the results of the pre-action, cycle I, and cycle II. The results showed a clear improvement in letter recognition skills in all subjects after using the A–Z letter card media, as seen from the increase in scores at each stage of action. These findings show that letter card media effectively help students recognise letter shapes more accurately and consistently, and can be applied as an alternative learning strategy that supports the development of early reading skills for students with mild intellectual disabilities at special needs schools.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Braille counting boxes in improving the ability of visually impaired sixth-grade students at Kanatang State Special School to add numbers between 0 and 100. The background of this study stems from the low mathematics learning outcomes of visually impaired students due to the abstract nature of numerical concepts, which necessitates concrete and tactile learning media to aid understanding. The research used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method with a single subject design and involved a sixth-grade visually impaired student, Evan Clief Kaka (ECK), with a minimum passing grade (KKM) of 75%. The results showed a clear improvement after the intervention using the Braille Counting Box. The student's initial ability in the pre-action was only 35%, then increased to 50% in the post-test of Cycle I, and reached 80% in the post-test of Cycle II, which exceeded the MCC. Observations also noted an increase in the student's fine motor skills and independence, from the adequate category in Cycle I to the good category in Cycle II. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Braille Counting Box is effective in improving the ability to add numbers 0–100 and helps blind sixth-grade students at Kanatang State Special School achieve learning completeness.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyse the effectiveness of implementing simple vocational sewing skills learning for mildly mentally disabled students in Grade VII at SLB Benpasi Kefamenanu. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, which was carried out in two cycles. The research subjects consisted of four students with mild intellectual disabilities. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation, while learning activities were implemented through demonstration, repeated practice (drill), and intensive individual assistance. The learning material focused on simple sewing skills, such as making straight stitches and producing small handicraft products. The results showed a significant improvement from cycle I to cycle II, both in terms of fine motor skills and the level of independence of the students. The students were increasingly able to follow instructions well, showed more consistent neatness in their sewing, and completed tasks more independently and on time. These findings are supported by the teachers' adaptive approach to students' needs and the availability of adequate learning facilities. Thus, simple sewing vocational learning has proven to be effective in increasing the independence and self-confidence of students with mild intellectual disabilities as a life skill.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the application of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy in improving communication and interaction skills through eye contact in children with autism at SDK Santa Maria Assumpta, Kupang City. The problems underlying this study are the children's low focus when communicating, difficulty responding to calls, and minimal eye contact when receiving instructions. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was conducted through participatory observation of the therapy implementation and interviews with therapists and school officials. Data were analysed using the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. ABA was implemented through focus training with word and movement imitation, directing the child's head to establish eye contact with the therapist, and giving simple instructions that were gradually increased. Each appropriate response was reinforced through verbal praise. The results of the study showed that the application of ABA therapy was able to increase the duration and consistency of eye contact, imitation skills, compliance with instructions, and the development of basic academic skills such as writing and puzzle solving. These findings indicate that ABA therapy is effective as a structured intervention to support the development of communication and interaction in children with autism in primary school settings.

Abstract

Basic literacy skills, including reading, writing, and arithmetic, are the main foundation for the learning success of primary school students. However, after the Covid-19 pandemic, some students in Indonesia, including those in Kupang City, still experience difficulties in mastering basic literacy due to learning loss. This study aims to analyse basic literacy clinical assistance strategies through the Lopo Pintar Programme as a community-based intervention model in supporting the recovery of primary school students' literacy skills. The research method used is a narrative literature review by examining scientific articles, education policy reports, and relevant local government programme documents. The results of the study show that contextual, intensive, and collaborative clinical literacy assistance has proven effective in improving the reading and writing skills of primary school students. The involvement of teacher training students as learning assistants also plays an important role in creating an adaptive, interactive, and meaningful learning process for students. These findings confirm that community-based literacy interventions are a relevant and sustainable strategy for accelerating the recovery of students' basic literacy skills after the Covid-19 pandemic.
