Abstract

A prolonged dry season can cause drought stress and have an unfavorable impact on the growth of tomato plants, resulting in crop failure. Therefore, research is needed on the resistance of tomato varieties to drought stress. The recommended technique for drought resistance screening in tomatoes is in vitro cultivation using Polyethylene Glycol (PEG). The research aimed to obtain new varieties that could be used as promising lines for varieties tolerant to drought stress. The research method used included using ingredients in the form of 5 varieties of tomatoes (Ratna, Intan, Chung, Palupi, and Amelia) and 5 concentrations of PEG chemicals (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%). Each seed of each tomato variety that had been sterilized using hypochlorite was germinated on MS0 media, then the germinated seeds with a size of ± 0.3 cm were transferred to MS0 + PEG treatment medium with each treatment concentration. The seeds that had been planted on the PEG-treated medium were then observed for growth for ± 4 weeks. The research data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and followed with DMRT at the 5% significance level. Based on the results, Palupi variety is the most tolerant variety, and Ratna variety is the most intolerant variety to drought stress. The higher the concentration of PEG used, the more it inhibits plant height, root length, and fresh weight of the roots.

Abstract

Heat stress and drought are combination of stresses that have the potential to occur simultaneously in extreme temperature changes. Rice is the main food crop in Indonesia and includes plants that are sensitive to stress. Indonesian local rice is believed to have high adaptability to Indonesian's geographical conditions, however there is lack of updated data to explain this information. This study attempts to determine the level of adaptability or resistance of Indonesian local rice to a combination of heat stress and drought. The results showed that the 24 Indonesian local rice accessions were divided into 3 resistance classes. The high resistance class is Sintha, the resistance classes are Gajah Mungkur, Kalimutu, Kapuas, Sukamandi, Seratus Malam, Cabacu, Bengawan Solo and Cisokan, as well as the medium resistance classes Jatiluhur, Batang Ombilin, Mahakam, Nona Bokra, Pucuk, Bengawan, Rojolele, IR64, Barumun, Cisadane, Memberamo, Cibodas, Gilirang, Fatmawati and Ciherang.

Abstract

— Curahpoh Village, Bondowoso Regency, has the potential to become a center for producing Robusta coffee. The uniqueness is found in several Robusta coffee outliers which produce yellow fruit resembling yellow cattura and yellow bourbon which are only found in Arabica species. A new clone of “yellow robusta coffee” found in Curahpoh Village needs to be characterized and identified for its kinship with existing robusta coffees on the market. It is hoped that the results of this study will become the basis for claims for the first superior new yellow coffee clone in Robusta coffee. This study used several morphological, physiological parameters to characterize these superior clones and identification of kinship with several other Robusta clones using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA). Other robusta clones as a comparison were imported from several community plantations or state-owned enterprises in Bondowoso district and its surroundings. The interim results in this study were that Robusta coffee in Curahpoh village was morphologically identical to BP 44, BP 42, BP 534 and BP358. This hypothesis is supported by the appearance of the leaves which are known to have waves that are quite strong compared to other coffee varieties collected in the trial greenhouse. Morphologically, Robusta coffee in Curahpoh village has similarities/identical with BP 44, BP 42, BP 534 and BP358 on the parameters of leaf number, leaf shape, leaf morphology and fruit color on the plant. Clones BP409, BP42, Sinasense, BP358, BP939, and Propelegitu are coffee clones that are molecularly highly related.

Abstract

Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia Andrews.) is one of the plantation crops that has a high selling price, namely wet vanilla IDR 200,000-300,000/kg, regular quality dry vanilla around 1-3 million/kg, and export quality reaching 5-7 million/kg. The opportunity for farmers to develop vanilla commodities in Indonesia is very large, but limited planting materials still hamper it. In-vitro propagation is one technique that can be used to overcome the problem of vanilla propagation in Indonesia. This research aimed to determine the interaction of BAP and coconut water on the growth of vanilla nodal explants in vitro. The method used in this research was a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a combination of Benzyl Amino Purine (BAP) and coconut water. The BAP concentration consists of 0 mg/L, 1 mg/L, and 2 mg/L. Coconut water has 0%, 15%, and 30% levels. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and further tested with the DMRT test at a confidence level of 95%. The results showed an interaction between BAP and coconut water on the growth of vanilla explants. The combination treatment of 1 mg/L BAP + 15% coconut water showed the best results with the fastest response time of 8.76+1.53 DAP, average shoot length 2.84±0.70 cm/explant and average root length 0.75±0.07 cm/explant.

Abstract

The majority of residents in Suling Wetan Village work as farmers and rely heavily on self-produced seeds due to the village’s remote location. One high-potential crop for marginal lands in the area is patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), a plant valued for its essential oil. However, the propagation of patchouli remains a significant challenge for local farmers due to limited knowledge and skills. This community engagement program aimed to enhance farmers’ capacities in patchouli propagation through a combination of awareness campaigns, technical workshops, hands-on training, direct field mentoring, and participatory monitoring and evaluation. Evaluation was conducted through direct observation and participant surveys. The results showed that 96% of participants gained a clear understanding of patchouli propagation techniques, and all participants acknowledged the importance of the program and expressed hope for its continuation. The activity successfully contributed to increasing farmers’ independence in sustainable patchouli seedling production.

Abstract

Watering is one of the keys to cocoa plant growth, where proper watering enhances plant development, while infrequent watering can lead to drought stress. Melatonin can help mitigate the negative impacts caused by drought stress. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates various physiological processes and is believed to enhance plant tolerance to stress while stimulating growth. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of melatonin application on the growth of cocoa seedlings under different watering frequency. The study was arranged by randomized complete block design with a split-plot arrangement, consisting of two factors with three replications. The main plot represents watering frequency of 3 days, 6 days, and 9 days. The subplot represented melatonin concentrations of 0 ?M, 50 ?M, 100 ?M, and 150 ?M. Observational parameters included plant growth based on plant height, stem diameter, leaf number, and leaf area, as well as plant dry weight based on the dry weight of the shoot, roots, and total plant. The results showed that at the 3-day irrigation frequency, melatonin concentrations of 50-100 ?M enhanced plant growth parameters including plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, as well as shoot dry weight and total plant dry weight. At the 6-day frequency, melatonin application up to 150 ?M reduced growth and had no effect on total plant dry weight, but increased root dry weight. At the 9-day irrigation frequency with application of 150 ?M melatonin improved all growth parameters and total plant dry weight. Therefore, melatonin can enhance drought tolerance and promote plant growth under limited irrigation conditions.
