Abstract

Polyscias scutellaria can be planted as hedge plants at home. This plant has many advantages, one of which is a hair tonic that already has a patent number. To be used on an industrial scale, it is necessary to provide raw materials on a large scale, which can be done by planting in certain regions. The objective is that the empowerment of the PKK in Pasirwangi District, Garut will make the Pasirwangi sub-district one of the centers for producing P. scutellaria leaf raw materials. The activities carried out include educating on the use of medicinal plants, especially P. scutellaria and ginger, practicing training on planting techniques, cultivating them, and giving P. scutellaria cuttings and post-harvest processing techniques. This activity is an activity of the IPB Lecturer Homecoming Program in 2022 which is carried out in several stages. Evaluation and monitoring of cultivation executed two months after training. The evaluation results showed that there was an increase in knowledge related to the cultivation of P. scutellaria and participants cultivated P. scutellaria in their garden after the training was more than 90%. All of the participant’s responses to the training carried out stated that it was very useful and hoped that the activities would be sustainable.

Abstract

Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) is valued for its anti-diabetic properties due to terpenoid compounds like charantin, but production struggles to meet market demands. This study aimed to analyze the response of plant growth characteristics, fruit production, and terpenoid compound production in bitter melon fruit by improving phosphorus availability through guano fertilizer application as additional organic fertilizer in organic cultivation. The experiment was conducted from May to September 2024 at the IPB experimental station in Cikarawang, Bogor, Indonesia. The experiment used a randomized complete block design with varying guano fertilizer doses (0, 152, 304, and 456 g per plant). Observations were conducted on 10 sample plants per experimental unit. The observed characteristics included vegetative and reproductive growth, fruit production, and total terpenoid production. Terpenoid analysis was performed using a colorimetric method with an ELISA reader. The results showed that guano fertilizer significantly affected several plant growth and production variables. Higher doses increased several values of vegetative growth parameters, flower numbers, and fruit production. The 304 g guano per plant yielded the highest concentration and production of terpenoids. This study demonstrates the potential of guano fertilizer to enhance bitter melon growth, yield, and terpenoid content, contributing to improved production to meet market demands. Abstract

Indian camphorweed (Pluchea indica), an indigenous vegetable, has promising potential as a cosmetic raw material because of its bioactive compounds. Research on cultivation techniques is relatively underexplored in agronomic research, particularly in fertilization practices for P. indica in the rainy season, a period that is critical for tropical agriculture. This study aimed to determine the optimal chicken manure dosage for the growth and yield of four-month-old Indian camphorweed during the rainy season. The experiment was conducted at IPB University, Indonesia, from November 2023 to February 2024. A randomized complete block design (RCBD) was applied, consisting of four chicken manure dosages: 0, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 kg per plant, with three replications. Results showed that chicken manure application was found to enhance vegetative growth, branching, leaf yield, and leaf N and K status, indicating its suitability as an organic nutrient source under high-rainfall conditions. Regression analysis indicated the optimal dosage of chicken manure was 7.00 kg per plant for fresh weight yield at 27 weeks after planting (WAP). Chicken manure application changes the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity, that suggest the trade-offs between yield improvement and certain aspects of functional quality. Abstract

Winged bean is a remarkable climbing plant, distinguished by its multiple segments that serve as growth sites for shoot, leaf and flower. Several studies have shown that the plant requires shoot pruning to increase the production of its flower buds, pods and seeds, but this practice can inhibit the generative phase. To overcome this challenge, the application of additional fertilizer is needed to provide the required nutrients. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effects of shoot pruning and additional fertilizer on the growth, yield and bioactive compounds of winged bean seeds. The determination of the proper rates of fertilization was important for plant production and to support sustainable agriculture. The study procedures were carried out at IPB experimental station in Leuwikopo, IPB University, Bogor. A Randomized complete block design (RCBD) was utilized with two factors and three replications, namely leaf pruning (without shoot pruning, 15 cm, and 30 cm from the ground) and additional fertilizer (0, 6.25, 12.5 and 18.5 g NPK 16-16-16 plant-1). The parameters observed included plant height, leaf nutrient, root length, yield, leaf number, as well as protein and fatty acid profile of seeds. The results showed that shoot pruning treatment and additional fertilizer had no interaction effect on plant growth and seed yield. Shoot pruning caused an increase in leaf number, fatty acid and linoleic acid content by 17% to 20%, 10%, and 16% to 19%, respectively, compared to the control. The use of additional fertilizer at a concentration of 6.25 to 12.5 g NPK (16-16-16) plant-1 increased leaf number, nutrients, and seed yield. Based on the findings, the highest seed yield (2.56 tons ha-1) was achieved with the application of additional fertilizer at the rates of 6.25 g NPK (16-16-16) plant-1, but shoot pruning was not required.
