Abstract

Modern Arabic Dialects (MADs) have an identical morphological system with some similarities and differences in the choice of the negation morphemes. The main concern of this paper is to discuss the typological properties of the negation morpheme mâ- ما and its variation in four Modern Arabic Dialects (MADs), JA (Jordanian Arabic), KA (Kuwaiti Arabic), SA (Sudanese Arabic), and YA (Yemeni Arabic) taking into account two negation strategies identified by Brustad (2000), namely Verbal Negation and Predicate Negation. Specifically, the study will shed light on the types and positions of the negation morphemes regarding VN and PN strategies. The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach. The data were taken from previous studies on negation in MADs and online sources, i.e., published articles and YouTube. The study found that when the negation morpheme mâ - ما is used as a one-negation system or a two-negation system, as a verbal and predicate negation, it changes to the negation morpheme mâ- ما due to phonological conditions and its pre-verbal position. The study concluded that three negation templates might be generalized in the four dialects, namely one-morpheme template, two-morpheme-template, and predicate negation template. Moreover, blocking of the negation morpheme movement in the sentences happens to do to phonological conditions.

Abstract

The research investigated the translation results of Google Translate based on the users’ perceptions. It was aimed at describing the users’ frequency in using Google Translate web, finding the users’ perceptions on the acceptability and the readability of Google Translation in translating scholarly articles from Indonesian into English, as well as finding whether students and lecturers have the same perceptions regarding these two criteria. The data were collected from scholarly articles written in Indonesian then translated into English using Google Translate web. Then a survey regarding this translation was distributed to users; they were students and lecturers of Computer Science/Information Technology/Information System. The analysis was conducted with regard to the acceptability and the readability of the translations using a rating scale of translation assessment. The findings suggest that more than half of the participants often use Google Translate Web, which means that the academics are part of the users of Google Translate. However, students and lecturers have a rather different perception of the results of Google Translate. Students consider Google Translate quite acceptable and readable, while lecturers view Google Translate as rather acceptable and moderately readable. In addition, the findings indicate that, to some extent, Google Translate still translates the Indonesian text into English literally.

Abstract

Music and song are vehicles of meanings, hence, depictions of women can be presented through them. This study investigates women’s portrayal in selected Billboard’s Year-End Chart songs through its significations which includes denotation, connotation, and myth constructed in the lyrics. Three major theoretical frameworks were used in this present study. The first theory is two orders of signification from Roland Barthes (1957) which was used to analyze the selected songs. The second theory is the bases of social power from French Raven (1959). The third theory is resilience model from Benard (2004). The findings reveal that in connotation level women are portrayed as powerful and resilient. The findings indicate that as a powerful being, women possess certain types of powers. Meanwhile as a resilient being, women possess particular qualities of resilience. From gender stereotype perspective, the myth implies that women possess dominating agency dimension alongside communion and competence dimensions, which implies that stereotype on women is not likely to be rigid. Keywords: Barthes’ two orders of signification, portrayal, powerful, resilient, women.

Abstract

This study aims to report a study on the patterns of Indonesian police strategies in examining criminal cases involving children. The ability to ask questions is instrumental for the investigators. The variety, content, and direction of the investigators’ questions  determine the value of information obtained from investigations(see Clarke & Milne, 2001). By using Strauss and Corbin’s qualitative paradigm, Glacer’s ground theory as well as Milne’s analytical frameworks, the present study has revealed that despite the fact that police investigation reports contained a lot of unproductive questions that might lead to unproductive answers, they compensated these with other investigative questioning strategies to reveal more information. Therefore effectiveness of questioning is more determined by these follow-up strategies than by the initial questions addressed to the suspects.
