Abstract

This study aims to describe and identify various types of relational processes found in Sundanese. The analysis is conducted using the perspective of Functional Systemic Linguistics, with a special focus on the transitivity system in the Sundanese language structure. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive approach. The data collection technique in this research is sourced from Mangle magazine. The data analysis technique involves classifying the clauses into attributive and identifying relational processes based on the transitivity system in Functional Systemic Linguistics. The results show that the texts in the Sundanese-language Mangle magazine contain typical Sundanese relational processes. The types of relational processes found are attributive and identifying relational processes. Each of these types is further divided into more specific categories: intensive, possessive, and circumstantial. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dan mengidentifikasi berbagai jenis proses relasional yang terdapat dalam bahasa Sunda. Abstract

Self-repair is correcting a sentence's structure or meaning and rewording it to provide more specific information. Exploring the use of self-repair in learners is important as a potential indicator of language attrition in second-language learning. Self-repair can solve misunderstandings and clarify the speaker’s intention. It also allows students to repair their errors without the teacher’s involvement. Previous studies of self-repair in Japanese mostly investigate learners in formal institutions. However, research on using Japanese learners in non-formal institutions is limited. This study investigates the types and the changes in the self-repair of Indonesian Japanese learners’ speaking over a five-month training program in a Vocational Training Institution (LPK). This study used a mixed method, which combined quantitative and qualitative. Participants of this study were 10 Indonesian Japanese learners at an LPK in West Java, Indonesia. The instruments through a monologue speaking task were given at the beginning and end of the training program. The results showed that morphological change is the most frequent self-repair used by learners. However, the least used self-repair at the beginning and end of the training program was different. At the beginning of the training program, the least used self-repair was a phonological change, while at the end, there were phonological and lexical changes. This study showed a tendency for a reduced frequency of self-repair with increased proficiency. This study provided a learning strategy and contributed to developing a curriculum and teaching method that is more effective in improving learners' speaking skills, especially in preparing for work in Japan. However, this study only examines self-repair using monologue speaking tasks with familiar topics. Future studies should investigate self-repair using additional task designs to deepen insights into developmental patterns.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the acquisition of English morphemes which is the second language used by children through their interaction in online games. English morphemes, which have different structures from Indonesian morphemes, are analyzed based on their types, especially on root, affixation, stem and base. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. The research sample consists of children aged 7 to 12 years old who have experience playing online games. Observations were made to identify the use of relevant English morphemes. The results show that children can understand and use roots both as content words and function words. However, not all lexical morphemes are found in children's speech, nor are bound roots as part of morphemes. The types of affixes used by children in playing online games are affixes at the beginning and end. There is no use of infixes. Root, stem and base which are word building elements have been used by children in the context of online games.

Abstract

Descriptive classical balaghah approaches have dominated figurative studies in the Qur'an. In its development, Qur'anic studies have begun to utilise cognitive linguistic approaches, albeit to a limited extent. These two approaches have not been systematically integrated, even though they share a common vision in understanding indirect meaning. This study aims to map the integration of the concept of Kināyah in classical balaghah with the conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) framework in Qur'anic linguistic studies through a systematic literature review. Following the PRISMA 2020 protocol and searching for data from the Scopus database, 15 articles were obtained that met the inclusion criteria and became the object of analysis. The findings show that studies discussing kinayah and CMT in the Qur'an are still scattered and partial. The characteristics of the definition and classification of kinayah refer to classical, pragmatic, and contextual semantic approaches. CMT is applied variably to explain abstract concepts in the Qur'an through metaphorical mapping, both in eschatological and theological themes, as well as in social discourse. The main challenges in integrating these two approaches include epistemological and terminological differences, as well as linguistic and cultural gaps. However, the opportunities for integration appear promising, especially at the textual and semantic analysis levels through a hybrid approach. This study emphasises the importance of developing an interdisciplinary methodological framework based on kinayah-CMT in Qur'anic linguistic studies. These findings reinforce linguistic-interpretation epistemology, advance adaptive models for Qur’anic figurative analysis, and open new directions for interdisciplinary Qur’anic studies in the digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to integrate the analysis of metaphors in the Quran with Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) introduced by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The primary focus of the research is the analysis of four verses with legal dimensions, recommended by experts in Islamic interpretation and law for their complex metaphorical structure and legal impact. The research uses a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach that emphasizes cognitive linguistics and CMT. Corpus analysis was conducted in two stages: 1) revealing the structure of metaphors based on classical rhetoric, and 2) mapping conceptual metaphors through source and target domains. The main findings indicate that the metaphorical verses in the Quran exhibit a systematic conceptual-cognitive structure. For example, the phrase “aqimu sh-shalah” is interpreted as a metaphor for prayer as a building of faith; the phrase “wa la tas’amu an taktubuhu” represents the documentation of the contract as legally binding; the phrase “libas” is interpreted as a metaphor for the marital relationship, which can be understood across cultures; the phrase “faqtho’u aydiyahuma” represents the elimination of criminal potential. This analysis reveals that kinayah not only serves a rhetorical function but also shapes the conceptual framework of legal understanding. The impact of this research confirms that integrating classical balaghah with CMT can broaden the scope of comprehensive Quranic studies interpretation.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to describe the translation methods used to translate diplomatic discourse, using a case study of Japanese diplomatic content on Instagram. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The analysis concludes that, in general, the translation style of Japanese diplomatic content on Japanese social media tends to use the communicative-semantic method. The communicative method is used because it prioritizes clarity for Indonesian readers. The semantic method is used because the translator wants to maintain the meaning structure of the source text without overly domesticating it. A combination of translation methods used to produce easily understandable translations and ensure that the implicit discourse ideology is conveyed smoothly to the reader.
