Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of changes in the education field – including the way teachers and students interact in the classroom. As a result, it is considered important for the Indonesian EFL teachers to explore and address this issue to make them familiar with the current pattern of interaction in the online classroom. With that knowledge, making the online teaching and learning effective is achievable. Even though a lot of studies have been conducted on similar topic, this study propose a different analysis by adapting the most prevalent framework in this topic – Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System (FIACS) – into more focused categories for better understanding. This case study aimed at exploring the interaction in an online EFL classroom by utilizing FIACS as the main framework.  The necessary data was collected through non-participant observation, with an English teacher and her seven grade students as the participants. The results of this study show that the online EFL classroom interaction was dominated by the teacher. It was caused by several reasons namely the passiveness of the students that led to more talking from the teacher and technological glitches. It caused the online meetings to be teacher-centered. As the teaching and learning medium changed, the pattern and characteristics of the interaction became unique. One of the notable uniqueness was the difficulty to oversee the online interactions between students.

Abstract

Hypnotherapy can be used as an effective therapy to overcome certain symptoms and conditions by entering the subconscious mind and giving positive suggestions to clients. When a therapist provides hypnosis, there is a distinctive linguistic structure. This structure can be analyzed using genre analysis. This study will focus on genre analysis in hypnotherapy induction by looking at the rhetorical moves structure of each hypnotherapy technique performed. In this research, the descriptive qualitative method is used, which aims to describe the rhetorical moves contained in the hypnotherapy induction script. The data used in this study were obtained from the Indonesian Board of Hypnotherapy training module in as many as five induction scripts. The technique used to analyze the data was immediate constituent analysis of each utterance in the hypnotherapy induction script. This research produces 20 rhetorical moves that have been classified from 203 utterances contained in the hypnotherapy induction script. Based on the speech acts, rhetorical moves in hypnotherapy are characterized by performative verbs commanding, declaring, informing, and praising, such as the use of the verbs pay attention, relax, imagine, and feel. The results show similarities and differences in the structure of rhetorical moves that can change and are not fixed.

Abstract

A video game is one of the popular cultures that gained much popularity among teenagers and adults. However, with its popularity, it also has controversy where female characters in video games are frequently to satisfy a male fantasy. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the representation of female characters in three video games: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Mark of The Ninja, and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4. This research aims to address how the representation of female characters also portrays that sexism in video games still lingers. This research applied multimodal discourse analysis inspired by Haliday’s Social Semiotics. This research also uses Kress and van Leeuwen’s techniques in analysing visual semiotic sources. This research used four steps of collecting and analysing data proposed by Bezemer and Jewitt collecting and logging data, viewing, sampling data, and transcribing and analysing data. In the collecting and logging data phase, this research collected recorded gameplay and videogame cut scene using Bandicam software and took notes from semiotic sources representing the female characters. Viewing and sampling data involved the viewing process in the recorded video and taking a sample of data from four female characters. After that, the researcher transcribes and analyses the data using a multimodal discourse analysis framework. This research found that those first lead female characters are represented by wearing tight and obscene attire but having skills in influencing the main character.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sincerity aspect of Indonesian and Korean advertisements through multimodal analysis. This study uses a content analysis research method using the FCB Grid Model on several products, namely fast food, tobacco, and telecommunications. The selection of ad samples was carried out based on the FCB Grid Model. The results of the study show that some products such as tobacco and fast food are included in the category of products that involve low emotions and thoughts when consumers consider these products. However, telecommunications products fall into the category of products that involve high rational thinking skills, thus requiring serious consideration from consumers. Other findings show that there are several semantic and pragmatic expressions that make consumers confused in choosing a product. The most frequent violations found in products are false expressions and explanations that lead consumers astray. In addition, other violations are expression omissions, exaggerated expressions, fictitious, and omission of important information, thus making consumers feel lost in choosing products.

Abstract

This study focuses on conversational implicatures in humorous utterances. In pragmatics, implicature analysis is used to reveal the additional meaning or implied meaning of the speech conveyed by the speaker. An implicature can occur because of a violation of the principle of conversation. Conversational implicature (especially) only appears in the context of certain utterances and has an implied meaning. An utterance in a conversation can imply a pragmatic function implicitly or imply some meaning indirectly through language. This study aims to describe the implicature forms of Banyumasan humorous utterances on YouTube. This study was analyzed using Searle’s (1969) speech acts theory and Grice’s (1975) theory of conversational implicature. The method in this research was descriptive qualitative. Based on the results of the analysis found in Banyumasan humorous speech, there are assertive, directive, expressive, and commissive implicature forms.

Abstract

Beauty products advertisements concern the scholars because they use the term women empowerment only to increase their profit without caring what happen to women struggle to defend their own rights in society. The third-wave feminism which more closely to define the beauty in diversity make scholars worried that this will misinterpret to prioritize male gaze rather than women empowerment. For this reason, this research aims to investigate the stereotype of women and how women empowerment were presented in L’Oreal Paris lipstick products advertised instagram. This research applies socio-pragmatic approach to semiotics because this study use social semiotics from Kress and van Leeuwen and pragmatism perspective from Peirce. The data of this research were collected from @lorealparis instagram posts which were related only on lipstick products. The data chosen purposively were collected and analyzed using four steps from Bezemer and Jewitt: collecting and logging, viewing, sampling, transcribing and analyzing. The result of this study shows that icon, index and symbol in the data represent women stereotypically as professional women, sexually powerful, and object of beauty which makes them looks equal and confidence regardless of their skin color and body size. This research also shows that @lorealparis lipstick product advertisement has empowered women to use their attractiveness as the power to conquer obstacles and injustice. Keywords:  semiotic, advertisement poster, L'Oreal Paris lipstick products, women empowerment Studi semiotik tentang iklan poster produk lipstik L'Oreal Paris AbstrakIklan produk kecantikan menjadi perhatian para sarjana karena mereka menggunakan istilah pemberdayaan wanita hanya untuk meningkatkan keuntungan mereka tanpa peduli apa yang terjadi pada perjuangan wanita dalam membela hak-hak mereka dalam masyarakat.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of socio-cognitive components in Indonesian political multimodal news text using the framework of Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (SF-MDA). With the increasing prominence of multimedia in contemporary news production, understanding how socio-cognitive aspects are conveyed through multiple modes becomes essential. Drawing on SF-MDA, which combines systemic functional linguistics and multimodal analysis, the study examines how Indonesian political news texts incorporate social and cognitive elements to shape meaning and influence audience perceptions. This study was undertaken qualitatively involving three online news published by Indonesia’s publishers as the data. The result reveals that the visual and verbal modes merged in the news tend to highlight the good image of the political figures. It means that the meanings of visual and verbal components of the news persuasively work together to create the good impressions among readers to the human actor in the news. As the implication, multimodal resources are strategically employed to shape public opinion and promote specific political ideologies. Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to the development of critical media literacy and foster a more nuanced understanding of the socio-political dynamics in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

Modern Arabic Dialects (MADs) have an identical morphological system with some similarities and differences in the choice of the negation morphemes. The main concern of this paper is to discuss the typological properties of the negation morpheme mâ- ما and its variation in four Modern Arabic Dialects (MADs), JA (Jordanian Arabic), KA (Kuwaiti Arabic), SA (Sudanese Arabic), and YA (Yemeni Arabic) taking into account two negation strategies identified by Brustad (2000), namely Verbal Negation and Predicate Negation. Specifically, the study will shed light on the types and positions of the negation morphemes regarding VN and PN strategies. The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach. The data were taken from previous studies on negation in MADs and online sources, i.e., published articles and YouTube. The study found that when the negation morpheme mâ - ما is used as a one-negation system or a two-negation system, as a verbal and predicate negation, it changes to the negation morpheme mâ- ما due to phonological conditions and its pre-verbal position. The study concluded that three negation templates might be generalized in the four dialects, namely one-morpheme template, two-morpheme-template, and predicate negation template. Moreover, blocking of the negation morpheme movement in the sentences happens to do to phonological conditions.

Abstract

This research examines politeness and impoliteness strategies in the Sundanese language as used on the Ridwan Remin YouTube podcast. Analyzing these strategies provides insights into cultural and social norms, enhances understanding of interpersonal communication within the Sundanese community, and demonstrates how traditional linguistic practices evolve in modern media contexts. As podcast media gains popularity, studying these strategies in this digital format reveals how traditional practices adapt to reflect broader social and cultural changes. This qualitative study utilizes politeness theory by Brown & Levinson (1987) and impoliteness theory by Culpeper (1996), alongside pragmatics, to explore how speakers manage social relationships through language in a podcast setting. The research focuses on the podcast episode "Soleh Solihun: Working with Sincerity (in Sundanese)," uploaded on Ridwan Remin's YouTube channel on May 31, 2021. By analyzing the podcast transcript, the study identifies various politeness and impoliteness strategies used by speakers and evaluates listener responses. This research not only contributes to understanding linguistic strategies in digital communication but also offers implications for future studies on communication practices in evolving digital platforms.
