Abstract

A tension exists between rationalists and empiricists regarding the nature of knowledge: innate then activated/discovered (rationalists) or constructed then invented (empiricists). The assumption is that, to a certain extent, basic knowledge seems to be innate in our mind and develops through experience by thinking processes to construct meanings. This meaning construction (thinking), mainly using language, is to make sense of and interpret the world. Meanings should be the primary motivation underlying linguistic constructions at all levels. This paper investigates meaning constructions at the lexical level of affixation by focusing on semantic behaviours of verbs in a complex word formation as an attempt: 1) to find out the semantic patterns of verb-based complex word formation, 2) to reveal if there is an iconic relationship of a sign (signifier) and its meaning (signified), and 3) to suggest for its teaching. Using semantic classes of verbs, based on situation types in deriving complex words, this study attempts to find out semantic patterns of such complex word formation and the possibility of revealing its iconicity. Using Antconc software, this study scrutinized linguistic expressions involving related verbs of state, event, and action in a corpus to reveal meaning construction at that level. The findings show several semantic patterns of verb-based complex word formation and an indication of the iconicity of signs. The paper also offers suggestions for teaching affixation

The main theory in this study is Searle's pragmatic speech act theory, and the data source is a screenshot of netizen comments on PD's Instagram account in 2022. The results of the study show that PD received hate speech in the comments section of her Instagram account. First, the expressive illocutionary, category-criticizing, found four data. Second, assertive illocutionary type, the state category, found one data. Third, the type of illocutionary commissive, swear category, found one data. Fourth, the illocutionary type of directive, the advising category, found three data. Last, the illocutionary type of declarative, the category of prohibit, found one data.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the reading ability of students with intellectual disabilities in Grade XII of SPLB-C YPLB Bandung from a clinical linguistics perspective. Through qualitative descriptive research methods, observations were conducted on three students categorized as having mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. The study included observations of their ability to read syllables with consonant-vowel (CV), vowel-consonant (VC), and consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) patterns, as well as in-depth interviews with teachers. The observations revealed that students with mild intellectual disabilities demonstrated better recognition and reading of syllable patterns compared to students with moderate intellectual disabilities. The main challenges faced were reading complex syllable patterns and blending sounds, which affected their ability to comprehend written instructions. This study recommends intervention based on the unique characteristics of each child, utilizing multisensory teaching approaches, and involving parents in supporting learning at home to improve the reading skills of students with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to examine whether there is an influence of children who stutter (CWS) on linguistic factors (phonology and morphology) in Indonesian. This research is a case study research with quantitative methods. The method used was: five CWS were directed to spontaneously speak Indonesian with a stuttering examination validated by a speech expert. Transcribe recordings and mark stutters. Next, words included in the stuttering category were analyzed for their phonological and morphological characteristics. The results showed that words starting with a phoneme and a consonant in the initial position of the word had a higher level of stuttering. Word length, word class, and inflection at the end of the word did not have a significant effect on the level of CWS stuttering. Stuttering can occur in many languages and the linguistic structure of speakers varies.

Abstract

This study explores the inclusive teaching strategies employed at SLB Bandung and their impact on the communication abilities of children with Down syndrome. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative design, the research provides a detailed examination of the methods, challenges, and outcomes within the context of a special education school in Bandung, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with teachers, classroom observations, and document analysis to ensure a comprehensive understanding. The findings reveal that individualized instruction, visual aids, and frequent communication practice are pivotal strategies used by teachers to enhance the communication skills of children with Down syndrome. These methods align with best practices in special education and are positively received by both educators and parents. However, significant challenges remain, including limited resources, the need for specialized training, and notably, the absence of speech therapy services at the school. Classroom observations and document analysis highlight the dynamic and interactive nature of these inclusive strategies. The commitment and creativity of teachers in implementing these strategies, despite the challenges, are evident. The study concludes that while inclusive teaching strategies significantly contribute to the communication development of children with Down syndrome, addressing resource limitations and incorporating speech therapy services are essential for maximizing student outcomes. Recommendations include enhancing collaboration among educators, policymakers, and therapists to improve the quality of inclusive education and ensure equitable support for all students.

Abstract

Video game is a new media of telling stories to young people and adults and it is no longer seen as gameplay only but gameplay with story. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain took Cold War as the main story background tells the story differently. The game system of this video game offers freedom to players to interact with anything during the gameplay, but this freedom has consequences. Applying social semiotic approach, this paper aims to identify how appraisal theory and narrative representation can be used to promote ecological awareness. After observing, collecting and viewing, transcribing and analyzing multimodal data, the researchers find that killing non-playable characters in form of human and animals and even enemy will reduce the score which is important in developing the playable characters’ weapons and equipment. Adopting the theory from Martin White in appraisal theory and Kress and van Leewuen, Caple in narrative representation, this paper also finds that appraisal theory is used to guide the players to play in ethical way such as using non-lethal weaponry, capturing wild animals to protect them from war, and collecting medical plants as needed only, besides, the enemy soldiers can be hired and give beneficial results to the players when they are used to play. In narrative representation, the freedom of choices is designed to make ethical play more plausible.
