Abstract

Studies reveal concern about students’ decreased motivation in the pandemic online learning, and novice teachers are especially vulnerable in this era as they still have little teaching experiences but have to teach in such a challenging environment. This paper investigates the problems a novice teacher faced in improving elementary students’ motivation during online learning and the motivational strategies she used. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview and presented according to the narrative inquiry design. The results imply that the novice teacher had troubles related to the lack of access to a real-time, face-to-face communication platform that allows direct feedback, students’ low motivation in submitting their tasks, and her lack of teaching experience. The novice teacher had used some motivational strategies which include relating the learning topic with the student's interest and context, utilizing various learning media and material, increasing the students’ expectancy of success, and encouraging positive self-evaluation. The novice teacher had implemented the motivational strategies to some extent and handled the problems quite well; however, there is still a lack of variety in her motivational strategies and a lack of teaching experience. Therefore, the teacher should continuously self-reflect and improve her knowledge and practice, institutions must ensure that novice teachers are not left to adapt on their own, and policies must prioritize equitable access to learning technologies and family engagement strategies to support children’s learning at home.

Abstract

This article explores the difference of tense and aspect use in Arabic academic writing by native and non-native speakers, driven by the challenges non-native speakers face in accurately conveying temporality in academic contexts. Improving non-native proficiency in Arabic grammar is crucial for enhancing the clarity of their research output. The study data consisted of academic articles written by both groups, specifically focusing on the results and discussion sections. Through qualitative analysis, findings revealed that native speakers demonstrate a strong grasp of grammar, with balanced use of past and present tenses and appropriate aspects, effectively expressing both completed and ongoing actions. In contrast, non-native speakers, particularly those from Indonesian backgrounds, tend to overuse the present tense and active voice, indicating difficulties in fully understanding Arabic’s temporal aspects. These results underscored the need for more intensive language instruction focused on mastering Arabic tense and aspect structures to improve non-native academic writing skills.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the acquisition of English morphemes which is the second language used by children through their interaction in online games. English morphemes, which have different structures from Indonesian morphemes, are analyzed based on their types, especially on root, affixation, stem and base. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. The research sample consists of children aged 7 to 12 years old who have experience playing online games. Observations were made to identify the use of relevant English morphemes. The results show that children can understand and use roots both as content words and function words. However, not all lexical morphemes are found in children's speech, nor are bound roots as part of morphemes. The types of affixes used by children in playing online games are affixes at the beginning and end. There is no use of infixes. Root, stem and base which are word building elements have been used by children in the context of online games.

Abstract

Video game has been in high demand recently and the historical events as the settings of video games in Metal Gear Solid V series and Ghost of Tsushima make the story of the video games more immersive. However, how this video games story and their gameplay system interact are not addressed yet from social semiotic perspective. From this perspective, this study aims to analyze the story of two mentioned video games and how this story can be in balance with its gameplay system. This research also offers an alternative point of view of how narratology and ludology should collaborate in video game discourse.  This research used social semiotic approach, applying Kress and van Leeuwen Analysis on moving images and genre analysis by Martin and Rose. The data of this research are video game narratives and gameplay system This study used four steps: collecting, viewing and logging, taking sample, and analyzing the data in collecting and analyzing technique as an adaptation of the multimodal method from Bezemer and Jewitt. The result of this study shows that those selected video games were developed into what Ensslin stated about Mastery-Mentoring-Choice category for the protagonist. The meso-macro level of discourse in two mentioned video games allow the players to upgrade weapons and equipment without disturbing the flows of the story. In Metal Gear Solid V series, the stories flows with orientation-complication-temporary resolution pattern, and the gameplay allow players to upgrade the base because of having main mission to help other nations from colonialism. Meanwhile, in Ghost of Tsushima, the story flows with orientation-complication-resolution pattern and the gameplay allows players only to upgrade character skills because of having main mission to fight the invaders. Future scholars can address the micro-meso analysis in social semiotics and how the video game players make their choices.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how the film Salam constructs and presents the ideology of Timorese women through female characters’ utterances and visual sequences laden with symbolic meaning and social discourse. The research employs Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), integrating three dimensions: textual analysis, discourse practice, and social practice. The data consist of transcriptions of female characters’ dialogues and selected key visual screenshots, analyzed to reveal their embedded ideological representations. The findings indicate that Salam portrays Timorese women not merely as domestic figures but also as guardians of tradition, ecological agents, and active participants in culturally rooted social resistance. The dialogues emphasize communal values, spiritual ties to ancestral land, and resistance to external forces such as mining exploitation. Visuals—such as scenes of weaving in public spaces and praying before the statue of the Virgin Mary—reinforce a localized ecofeminist ideology that intertwines custom, ecology, and religiosity. A unique finding of this study is the ideological shift of women from domestic spheres to public arenas, using cultural practices as a form of counter-hegemony. This research highlights how local visual media serve as a vital platform for articulating women’s ideologies and the cultural wisdom of indigenous communities.

Abstract

Modern Arabic Dialects (MADs) have an identical morphological system with some similarities and differences in the choice of the negation morphemes. The main concern of this paper is to discuss the typological properties of the negation morpheme mâ- ما and its variation in four Modern Arabic Dialects (MADs), JA (Jordanian Arabic), KA (Kuwaiti Arabic), SA (Sudanese Arabic), and YA (Yemeni Arabic) taking into account two negation strategies identified by Brustad (2000), namely Verbal Negation and Predicate Negation. Specifically, the study will shed light on the types and positions of the negation morphemes regarding VN and PN strategies. The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach. The data were taken from previous studies on negation in MADs and online sources, i.e., published articles and YouTube. The study found that when the negation morpheme mâ - ما is used as a one-negation system or a two-negation system, as a verbal and predicate negation, it changes to the negation morpheme mâ- ما due to phonological conditions and its pre-verbal position. The study concluded that three negation templates might be generalized in the four dialects, namely one-morpheme template, two-morpheme-template, and predicate negation template. Moreover, blocking of the negation morpheme movement in the sentences happens to do to phonological conditions.

Abstract

This study explores the inclusive teaching strategies employed at SLB Bandung and their impact on the communication abilities of children with Down syndrome. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative design, the research provides a detailed examination of the methods, challenges, and outcomes within the context of a special education school in Bandung, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with teachers, classroom observations, and document analysis to ensure a comprehensive understanding. The findings reveal that individualized instruction, visual aids, and frequent communication practice are pivotal strategies used by teachers to enhance the communication skills of children with Down syndrome. These methods align with best practices in special education and are positively received by both educators and parents. However, significant challenges remain, including limited resources, the need for specialized training, and notably, the absence of speech therapy services at the school. Classroom observations and document analysis highlight the dynamic and interactive nature of these inclusive strategies. The commitment and creativity of teachers in implementing these strategies, despite the challenges, are evident. The study concludes that while inclusive teaching strategies significantly contribute to the communication development of children with Down syndrome, addressing resource limitations and incorporating speech therapy services are essential for maximizing student outcomes. Recommendations include enhancing collaboration among educators, policymakers, and therapists to improve the quality of inclusive education and ensure equitable support for all students.
