Abstract

The rapid growth of Islamic education in Indonesia, particularly in the tahfidz Al-Qur'an program, has seen significant progress, with more than 25,000 educational institutions registered by 2024. However, not all institutions produce high-quality hafidz, largely due to the diverse abilities of students, which are influenced by their educational backgrounds and memorization methods. This study focuses on the strategies employed by students in memorizing the Qur'an and the practical implementation of these strategies. The research aims to identify effective memorization methods in tahfidz programs and evaluate their impact on the quality of memorization. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design at the Daarul Yusr Al-Qur'an Islamic Boarding School, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that 10 students successfully memorized 30 juz of the Qur'an. Additionally, the memorization process contributed to enhancing students' discipline and self-confidence. These results affirm that employing a differentiated approach in memorization not only improves the quality of memorization but also positively influences students' character. This study is expected to serve as a reference for Islamic educational institutions in addressing challenges in tahfidz education and developing curricula tailored to individual student needs.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the efforts of internalizing the values of wasathiyyah in the endeavor to enhance religiosity and tolerance attitudes based on mentoring. Since the Indonesian government introduced the concept of religious moderation as a preventive measure to counteract radicalism in society, the majority of State Universities have sought to implement this policy through various programs on their campuses. In Indonesia, the official stance is against radical ideologies, given the potential divisive consequences and the emergence of terrorist actions. In 2016, the Setara Institute surveyed 171 schools in Jakarta and Bandung and observed that seeds of terrorist ideologies had emerged within classrooms. At the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, supported by the Rector, the Tutorial program was established with the aim of enhancing the individual piety of students. Using a qualitative approach, data collection combined ethnographic methods and interviews with 17 students. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman framework, including drawing, displaying data, reduction, and conclusion. The research findings indicate significant results, wherein the mentoring-based tutorial program with the internalization of wasathiyyah values enhances the religiosity and tolerance of students through the selection of qualified mentors, a wasathiyyah curriculum, inclusive communities, and ongoing evaluation. Collaboration with relevant parties is deemed necessary.  Keywords:  Wasathiyyah Values, Mentoring, Tolerance

Abstract

The existence has recently significantly disrupted the stability of religious harmony in Indonesia. The current reality of extreme and exclusive religion is spreading in the academic world. Students who only use rational logic without religious texts will be trapped in radical logical reasoning, so they tend to be liberal. On the other hand, students who only adhere to religious texts without being accompanied by critical logic will be dogmatic in understanding religious texts literally. The existence of an understanding of Islam with two camps of liberal and literal interpretation is not in line with a moderation in religion which will obscure the actual value of Islamic teachings. This ideology will produce radical religious perspectives, attitudes, and behaviors. The research approach is research and development, which collaborates quantitative and qualitative. Methods of collecting data through interviews, observation, questionnaires, and documentation. The selection of respondents and informants through random sampling technique, while data analysis using the Miles and Huberman approach. This study aims to offer a model for implementing religious moderation learning in higher education to stem contradictory ideologies with Islamic teachings.

Abstract

The Qur'anic Literacy Eradication Training through the LITERAT Learning Model aims to enhance the capacity of Islamic Education (PAI) teachers in systematically assessing and teaching Qur'anic literacy. The training involved 50 teachers in Bandung Regency and was conducted as an interactive workshop combining theoretical presentations, simulations, and hands-on practice. The LITERAT model—which consists of seven stages: Listening, Identification, Treatment, Explanation, Reading, Assessment, and Testing—equips participants with the ability to categorize students' Qur'anic reading skills into five levels: TPD1, TPD2, TD, TT, and TM. Before the training, most participants could only make general distinctions between "fluent" and "non-fluent" students in reading the Qur'an. After completing the training, participants reported the ability to apply classification indicators in a more measurable and structured manner. Pre-test results showed an average participant score of 61.5, which increased to 83.2 in the post-test. The majority of participants demonstrated improvement in the accuracy of student assessment classifications. Additionally, the majority of participants stated that the training was highly beneficial. The training strengthened participants' understanding of the LITERAT model and improved their pedagogical and evaluative competencies in Qur'anic instruction. This intervention significantly contributes to empowering teachers as objective, data-driven evaluators of religious literacy.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Islamic law in diaspora naturalization, comparing dynamics across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the West. While naturalization has expanded globally due to economic integration, political participation, and security concerns, the role of Islamic law varies regionally. Using a qualitative comparative approach, this research analyzes policies in the three regions, supplemented by a Quantitative Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of Scopus-indexed journals under the PRISMA model. Findings reveal stark contrasts: In the Middle East, Islamic law is central to citizenship, particularly in religion-based status and family law, with deep integration into national legal systems. Southeast Asia adopts a more adaptive approach, prioritizing economic and skill-based naturalization while retaining Islamic principles in marriage and inheritance. Conversely, Western secular frameworks exclude formal recognition of Islamic law in naturalization, though diaspora communities often navigate dual legal realities. The study highlights how regional legal traditions, socio-political contexts, and migration policies shape these disparities. It concludes that Islamic law’s influence persists most strongly in the Middle East, remains contextually flexible in Southeast Asia, and operates informally in the West despite systemic secularization. These insights contribute to debates on religion, migration, and legal pluralism in global citizenship regimes.

Abstract

This study examines the principles and optimization patterns of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) derived from the story of Dzulqarnain in Surah Al-Kahf [18]: 94–98 and explores its relevance to the concept of Islamic education. The primary focus is on how Qur’anic values embedded in this narrative serve as the foundation for developing the PjBL concept within Islamic education. To conduct a comprehensive examination of the verses, this research employs a literature study method with a thematic exegesis approach, utilizing primary data sources from classical and contemporary Qur’anic commentaries, including Tafsir Al-Mishbah, Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Tafsir Fathul Qadir, Tafsir As-Sa’di, and Tafsir Al-Tabari, as well as secondary data from relevant scholarly books and journal articles. The findings reveal a significant alignment between the educational concepts and values in the Qur’an and the principles and optimization patterns of PjBL. These include real-world action and practice, contextual learning, consultation (shura), cooperation and collaboration, creativity and problem-solving, responsibility, visionary and adaptive thinking, independence, and holistic learning. Moreover, the verses emphasize the integration of tawhid values into the learning process, thereby positioning PjBL as relevant to the aims of Islamic education.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the dynamics of wayang golek art and to highlight its sustainability in the future. Modernity, the acceleration of technological devices and globalization wave in the last two decades, transfers great pressure on traditional arts and culture. Wayang Golek, a performing art originally from West Java, has recently received a fairly strong wave of resistance due to changes in the social culture which is mainly leading to modernity. By using a qualitative approach, data collection techniques were carried out by interviewing two main players as the puppeteers of Wayang Golek. The data analysis uses the theory of Miles and Hubberman, and the theoretical review of Islamic studies. The results of the study show that 1) Wayang Golek has unique characteristics, where the talent needed tends to go through the "inheritance" tradition, 2) Wayang Golek can be a bridge for internalizing religious and humanist values for the community through unique stories based on custom, 3) the restriction of Wayang Golek performance due to the Covid-19 pandemic leads the puppeteers to be more creative to survive, such as creating videos and uploading them in YouTube and other social media, and 4) the preservation of this art depends on the serious attention of all parties, from the government, regional officials, and the community.
