Abstract

The diversity of student characteristics poses a challenge in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) instruction, particularly regarding the History of Islamic Civilization curriculum in elementary schools, where teaching practices still tend to be uniform. Although differentiated instruction has been extensively studied, research highlighting teachers’ real-world experiences in implementing it in the classroom remains limited. This study aims to explore teachers’ experiences in applying differentiated instruction to the teaching of the IRE. This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design involving one IRE teacher at an elementary school. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, and were subsequently analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The results indicate that differentiated instruction is implemented concretely through grouping students based on learning style preferences (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), adapting tasks to students’ readiness levels, using varied media, and employing product-based assessments such as infographics, presentations, and role-plays. The findings also suggest that these strategies enhance student engagement, classroom interaction, and understanding of historical content.  This study contributes to our understanding of how differentiated instruction is implemented in Islamic Religius Education classrooms, particularly in the context of elementary schools, and serves as a practical guide for teachers in developing more inclusive and student-centered instruction that responds to student diversity.

Abstract

Abstract

This article focuses on an inaccurate understanding of Islam that causes hatred, anxiety, and unfounded fear of the Muslim community. On account of this view of Islam, Muslims face hostility, discrimination, intolerance, and racism. This attitude is increasingly seen in mass media propaganda that presents a partial and inaccurate view of the religion. Islam is presented as a violent belief system and is responsible for radicalism and terrorism. The media greatly influences social reality. They function as a spectacle, but they also influence public opinion on a range of issues. The research design of this paper uses literature review with descriptive analysis. The results show that internalizing the Islamic value of rahmatan lil alamin (“being a mercy to the world”) through the media is a solution that can rectify misconceptions about Islam. Along with the foundation of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar (“enjoining the good and forbidding the evil”), the value of “being a mercy to the world” can transform people into educators (muaddib), agents of correct information (musaddid), reformers (mujaddid), unifiers (muwahhid), and fighters (mujahid).

Abstract

The application of narrative analysis to Quranic interpretation (tafsir) has emerged as a significant methodological approach in contemporary Islamic scholarship, bridging classical exegetical traditions with modern literary theory. This systematic literature review examines the development of narrative analysis methodology as a formal analytical framework for interpreting the Qur’an between 2000 and 2025. In this study, tafsir is no longer treated as the primary methodological framework; rather, it is positioned as historical and textual data that can be analyzed using modern narratological tools. The analysis reveals three dominant approaches in treating tafsir texts as material objects: structural analysis, intertextual analysis, and contextual analysis. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search across multiple academic databases, identifying 191 relevant studies. The review identifies significant methodological innovations, including the integration of digital humanities tools, comparative narrative approaches, and cross-cultural interpretive frameworks. Key findings indicate that narrative analysis in tafsir has evolved from descriptive storytelling approaches to sophisticated hermeneutical methodologies that engage with both classical Islamic exegetical traditions and contemporary literary theory. The study reveals gaps in comparative cross-cultural narrative analysis and limited integration of cognitive narrative theory. This review contributes to the understanding of contemporary tafsir methodology and provides a foundation for future research in narrative-based Quranic interpretation.

Abstract

The moral degradation of Indonesian adolescents is a persistent problem that cannot be resolved solely through cognitive-based Islamic religious education (PAI). This study aims to analyze the internalization process of Islamic values through SIRAJA school culture, identify the values embedded within it, explain its role in forming students' religious character, and identify the factors influencing the process. Employing a qualitative single case study design, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with 14 informants comprising educators, students, and school administrators, as well as observation and documentation, analyzed using source triangulation. Results show that internalization proceeds through four successive stages: value transmission, habituation, exemplary modeling, and reinforcement. SIRAJA's six pillars (Polite, Innovative, Resilient, Adaptive, Honest, and Trust) are integrated across all subjects and school activities, contributing to the formation of a value ecosystem that extends the scope of the formal curriculum. Success is supported by structured institutional planning, teacher modeling, and a conducive school environment. This study contributes to Islamic education scholarship by demonstrating that value internalization becomes more systematic when school culture is institutionally constructed with a self-designed identity, named pillars, and a sustainable evaluation mechanism rather than relying solely on generic religious practices.

Abstract

Psychomotor assessment in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) at the elementary school level is essential for ensuring that students' religious understanding extends beyond cognitive knowledge to encompass practical worship skills. This study aims to analyze the implementation of psychomotor assessment in IRE learning at a public elementary school in Bandung, Indonesia, examining teachers' understanding, assessment planning, and implementation strategies. A descriptive qualitative approach with an instrumental case study design was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 3 IRE teachers, non-participant classroom observations (12 sessions), and document analysis of assessment instruments and student portfolios. Data were analyzed thematically using Miles and Huberman's interactive model, involving data reduction, display, and verification. Teachers conceptualized psychomotor assessment as authentic evaluation of worship practices integrated with character development. Assessment planning systematically translated curriculum objectives into observable performance indicators using criterion-referenced rubrics. Implementation strategies combined direct observation (70%), practice simulations (20%), and peer assessment (10%), with multiple assessment points ensuring reliability. Assessment data informed formative feedback, differentiated instruction, and curriculum refinement. Professional development occurred through formal training programs (twice annually), peer collaboration networks, and self-directed learning initiatives. The study demonstrates a comprehensive psychomotor assessment system that effectively bridges theoretical knowledge and practical application in IRE. Findings suggest the need for standardized assessment rubrics, sustained practical training programs, and systematic documentation protocols to enhance assessment validity and pedagogical impact in religious education contexts.

Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates how culturally rooted value systems interact with digital pedagogical models to enhance Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) among students of Islamic education. It proposes an integrated cultural–pedagogical model examining the relationships among flipped classroom readiness (KFC), ethnoreligious value integrity (INE), hybrid problem-based learning (HPBL), and HOTS in Indonesian higher education. Design/methods/approach – A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed. Quantitative data were collected from 772 students using a validated 48-item questionnaire and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). To contextualize the model theoretically, a complementary bibliometric analysis of 1,387 Scopus-indexed publications on HOTS and digital pedagogy was conducted. Findings – The structural model demonstrated excellent fit (CFI = .961; RMSEA = .050) and explained 68% of the variance in HOTS. Results revealed that flipped classroom readiness significantly influenced hybrid problem-based learning (β = .58) and ethnoreligious value integrity (β = .52). However, flipped classroom readiness had no significant direct effect on HOTS (β = .09, p = .078). Instead, HOTS development was fully mediated through hybrid problem-based learning (β = .30) and ethnoreligious value integrity (β = .15). Research implications/limitations – The findings suggest that digital learning readiness alone is insufficient to foster HOTS without culturally grounded mediation. However, the study is limited to Islamic education students in Indonesia. Originality/value – This study offers a novel cultural–pedagogical model integrating digital learning readiness, ethnoreligious values, and hybrid problem-based learning, providing new insights for culturally responsive curriculum design in Islamic higher education.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the integration of Qur'anic values into the tutorial model of Islamic recligious education in higher education, focusing on the reliability of measurement instruments, the correlation between the main constructs, and their practical implications. Data were collected from 68 respondents, the majority of whom were women (95.6%). Reliability tests with Cronbach's Alpha showed strong internal consistency across domains: Qur'anic Integration (α = 0.897), Learning Environment (α = 0.969), Personal Impact (α = 0.969), and Teaching Quality (α = 0.981). Descriptive analysis revealed that Qur'anic Integration obtained the highest average score (M = 4.24), while the Learning Environment obtained the lowest score (M = 3.43). Correlation analysis showed a very strong relationship between Learning Environment and Personal Impact (r = 0.952), Learning Environment and Teaching Quality (r = 0.950), and Personal Impact and Teaching Quality (r = 0.944). These findings suggest that improvements in the learning environment have the potential to have a significant chain effect on personal impact and teaching quality. The study recommends prioritizing structural and pedagogical improvements in the learning environment as the main intervention, complemented by mentoring initiatives, while maintaining the strength that has been seen in Qur'anic integration. By placing these findings in a broader discourse on Islamic education reform, the study confirms how empirical evidence can be used to direct strategic improvements to tutorial models in colleges.
