Abstract

Farmer households in rural areas tend to adopt multiple livelihood patterns as a livelihood strategy. Limited income in the agricultural sector causes farmers to develop strategies to sustain their lives. This paper aims to analyze the diversity of livelihoods of rice farming households on rainfed land. This research uses a qualitative design with a case study technique. Informants in this study were farmer households and community leaders. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results show that livelihood strategies are related to three main things: the availability of opportunities, the existence of capabilities and the diversity of livelihood options. One of the factors that determine the livelihood strategies adopted by farmer households is related to the employment opportunities available in the village as well as opportunities that come from both inside and outside the village.

Abstract

This paper aims to study collaboration between actors in the horticultural agricultural entrepreneurship ecosystem in West Java. The research method used in this paper is descriptive – qualitative analysis, with an analytical focus on quadruple helix collaboration between farming actors, government, universities and the agricultural industry, analyzing the knowledge transfer process carried out between the actors involved, to develop agricultural entrepreneurship. The research results explain that strengthening human resources and agricultural institutions is the main aspect in creating a competitive and productive agricultural entrepreneurship ecosystem. In its implementation, these programs have helped farmers in developing their farming businesses, both in terms of on-farm cultivation and farming management. However, on the other hand, program implementation in the field is still limited and not sustainable. To overcome this, synergistic collaboration is needed between the actors involved (government, universities, industry and farming actors). Information openness and intense communication can help the synergy process, so that the actors involved can mutually strengthen each other, making it easier to achieve activity outcomes, namely creating a conducive, productive and competitive agricultural entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Abstract

Farming households tend to develop multiple livelihood strategies to fulfil their needs, which can no longer be met by the agricultural sector. The livelihood strategy adopted by households relies on their livelihood assets or resources. This study aims to analyze the livelihood resources of wet-rice farming households in Kroya Subdistrict, Indramayu Regency. This research uses a qualitative design with a case study technique. The informants in this study were community leaders and village officials, while the participants were members of 50 rainfed wetland rice farming households. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that most farmer households also depend on the non-agricultural sector as a livelihood activity. The existence of social capital and easy access to financial resources are among the factors that attract many farming households to send one of their household members to work abroad as a livelihood activity option.

Abstract

Changes in environmental conditions pose a significant threat to rice production in Kroya Sub-district, Indramayu Regency, which in turn affects the vulnerability of farmer households. This study aims to analyze the vulnerability context faced by wet-rice farmer households in Kroya District, Indramayu Regency, using a qualitative design and case study techniques.   The study collected primary data from 50 informants and participants through observation and in-depth interviews. The data was analyzed descriptively using three simultaneous activities: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that vulnerabilities are related to shocks and seasons, and there are subjective factors in understanding the context of vulnerability. To address the vulnerability, farmer households implement adaptation strategies such as diversifying their income streams in both agricultural and non-agricultural sectors.

Abstract

Understanding an individual's ability to recognize the opportunities that exist in the surrounding environment has become an important issue in the study of entrepreneurship globally. Research on motivation that emerges from within an entrepreneur is still relatively little done by entrepreneurship researchers. This research aims to provide a better understanding of why a person chooses to become an entrepreneur and how they can achieve success in their business. This research uses a qualitative method, with literature review techniques. Goals consist of four categories, including external rewards, independence/autonomy, internal rewards, and a sense of security that comes from and for the family. A farmer runs a business not necessarily to achieve a large level of profit, often farmers run a business to pass on the inheritance from the family, or to become an independent person, so that they do not depend on others. This research is expected to explain and predict the behavior of farmers as an entrepreneur, namely by understanding how and why a goal is important for an entrepreneur. Furthermore, this study explains the process of achieving goals, which can motivate and influence farmers' entrepreneurial behavior. Finally, this research is expected to contribute to answering questions in entrepreneurship research, namely; How does an entrepreneur strive to build, pursue, and achieve their goals?

Abstract

In order to facilitate fertilizer subsidies for farmers, the government created a card-based fertilizer subsidy program called Kartu Tani. The Kartu Tani program aims to ensure that farmers receive fertilizer quotas that suit their needs and have access to purchase subsidized fertilizer, however, in the implementation process there are various problems such as the lack of absorption of subsidized fertilizer through the Kartu Tani, a reduction in subsidized fertilizer variants, and the use of the Kartu Tani. not as recommended. At the research location, there is a problem, namely the low level of absorption of subsidized fertilizer through Kartu Tani in 2023. This research aims to analyze farmers' responses to Kartu Tani program in Gegesik Kidul Village, Cirebon Regency. In this research, a quantitative research design was used using a questionnaire as a primary data collection method which was then analyzed using descriptive analysis. This research uses the census method. The respondents in this study were all members of the Karya Bhakti I Farmer Group who had active Kartu Tani Cards totaling 55 people. The research results showed that the implementation of the Farmer's Card program at the farmer research location did not comply with procedures regarding the use of the Kartu Tani by farmers. Apart from that, farmers' response to Kartu Tani program was not good. This is motivated by farmers' low understanding of the Kartu Tani Card and a lack of assistance. Using Kartu Tani that do not comply with procedures can increase the potential for misuse of subsidized fertilizers. Therefore, maximum assistance is needed from various parties.

Abstract

BPS data shows a decrease in the number of people working in the agricultural sector and the age structure of farmers is dominated by older farmers. The decline in the number of farmer households in Indonesia is caused by several factors, including death or moving out of the agricultural sector, and on the other hand there are fewer new residents involved in the agricultural sector. However, an interesting phenomenon in West Bandung Regency is that horticulture farming is beginning to be sought after by young farmers. This study aimed to provide an overview of young farmers analyzed through the characteristics, perceptions, and background of young farmers in running horticulture farming in West Bandung Regency. This research was a quantitative research with survey techniques. Respondents in this study were 120 young farmers who were randomly selected. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that there were still a few young farmers who were college graduates, have the land of <0.5 ha and not long enough to run farming. Most young farmers have parents who also work as farmers. The main factor that drives young farmers to engage in agriculture were parental and evirontment support and quite promising opportunities in the horticulture sub-sector.Keywords : Farmer, Young, Horticulture

Abstract

The nexus between migration and agricultural transformation encapsulates the dynamics of rural community livelihoods. Existing studies have not explicitly delineated the landscape of out-migration from rural regions in Indonesia. This study aims to elucidate migration behaviors intertwined with the lives of farming households and the utilization of remittances for agricultural investment activities. Through a comprehensive examination of literature and meta-analyses encompassing various migration cases in Indonesia, the findings reveal that both local and international migration by rural residents illustrate the adaptive strategies employed by households to cope with constrained income within the agricultural sector and limited employment prospects outside it in their villages. The enduring bond of rural communities with the agricultural sector aligns with the discernible pattern of remittance utilization, where a portion is earmarked for agricultural investments, such as land acquisition, including rice fields. The outcomes of this meta-analysis offer a holistic perspective on the relationship between migration and agriculture in Indonesia, serving as a foundation for optimizing the potential of migrants through well-tailored reintegration strategies aimed at mitigating poverty in rural areas.

Abstract

Family function as a system is very urged by what to be the aims of life and ownership of resources. Family’s aims can be reached when resources available. Satisfaction level on family’s resources ownership is influenced by family’s values. The aimed of this research were to identify the ownership of resources of low income family and to analyze the satisfaction level on resources ownership by low income family. This research was a cross sectional study in thirty poor families that lived in urban area. In low income family, resources ownership (especially physical resources) is limited. Average of income per capita per month was Rp 78.492,00. Income was used only for daily food consumption, just enough "to eat" and not considering family nutrient requirement aspects. Because of this economy limitedness, many families had childrens who dropped out school. In general, physical resources that owned by family can only fulfil half of samples’ expectation, while non physical resources factor in general can fulfil samples’ expectation. Samples’s age correlated positively with the satisfaction level, while education correlated negatively with satisfaction level. Family income not correlated with samples satisfaction level. Satisfaction was influenced by how the families managed the income to fulfill daily needs.
