Abstract

The present study examines learners' strategies in a basic speaking class at Kampung Inggris Jogja to overcome communication breakdowns and effectively convey their ideas and messages to their interlocutors. Furthermore, the study aims to investigate the achievement strategies within the framework of Celce-Murcia et al. (1995) in the classroom interactions among the learners at Kampung Inggris Jogja. A qualitative methodology, specifically discourse analysis of spoken interactions, was utilized to analyze the collected data. Data was gathered through observation of the learners' interactions and recording of their conversations. The investigation revealed that the learners at Kampung Inggris Jogja utilized various achievement strategies in their interactions. However, the foreignizing strategy was not observed among the participants. The strategies most frequently employed by the learners included code-switching, literal translation, non-linguistic means, restructuring, and retrieval. Additionally, the study indicated that learning activities, topics, and environments significantly impacted the learners' communication. Internal factors, such as vocabulary mastery, knowledge of proper grammar, and motivation, played a crucial role in the learners' speaking performance. It is essential to acknowledge the limitations of this study and recognize the need for further research to build upon these findings. Nevertheless, the results of this study contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the strategies utilized by learners to overcome communication problems and have implications for language teaching and learning in similar contexts. The study highlights the significance of the findings for future research and language education.

Abstract

Producing a well-organized and coherent text remains a significant problem in EFL context writing. Cognitive demands and low exposure to the language contribute to this issue. Numerous researches are available to tackle EFL learners’ texts by using various ways such as Theme/Rheme and thematic progression. Some studies attempt to uncover EFL texts’ coherence by using rhetorical moves and structure. This study attempted a novel method to reveal text coherence called Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) by Mann and Thompson (1988). The data were the introduction sections of ten articles taken from the International Conference on Science, Education, and Technology (ISET) 2019, and they were analyzed by considering 23 relations in RST. The findings reveal that the Subject Matter relations category overpowers the number of Presentational relations. Elaboration ranks at the top with 72 data, followed by Background (19 times) and Purpose (18 times). However, there is no datum for Volitional Result, Otherwise, Interpretation, and Sequence relations. It suggests that the article writers preferred to provide information by giving a detailed explanation, a background of the case, and the study purposes. The results are expected to encourage future researchers to utilize various ways of tackling text coherence and to provide an alternative to analyzing text for educators.

Abstract

There are many English novels translated into Indonesian. One of them is Five Feet Apart. The novel not only amazes readers by using the story of a couple with cystic fibrosis but the language in the novel is also presented using figurative language. Sometimes, English novel is still difficult for Indonesian to understand, so it becomes the reason why translation technique is important. This research aims to explain Newmark’s translation technique and to explain the achievement of full, partial, and no equivalence. This research is included in the type of qualitative descriptive research. To obtain data, the researchers collected the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences containing figurative language. Perrine’s classification of figurative language (1997), Newmark’s classification of translation technique (1988), and Bell’s classification of degree semantic equivalence (1997) were used in the analysis of the texts. The analysis was done by identifying, classifying, interpreting, and analyzing the data. The research finding reveals 8 translation techniques used in 202 data. They are couplet, literal translation, modulation, paraphrase, transposition, expansion, cultural equivalence, and compensation. The dominant technique is couplet because the author makes various conditions so it is not enough to translate with only 1 technique. The dominant degree of semantic equivalence is fully equivalence. In conclusion, the large number of fully equivalence indicates that the translator keeps maintaining the meaning and minimizing non-equivalence

Abstract

The present study began with wide use of a textbook entitled "Bahasa Inggris" in Sorong. The book is written by Utami Widiati, Zuliati Rohmah, and Furaidah. It focuses on analyzing all the reading passages in the chosen chapters. Qualitative descriptive implemented in assessing the use of cohesive devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory. The findings reveal 895 grammatical and 222 lexical cohesions in the reading passages. The grammatical consisted of 622 references, 15 substitutions, 22 ellipses, and 236 conjunctions and the lexical cohesion consisted of 186 reiterations and 36 collocations. Furthermore, as support in providing the text's coherence, the researchers asked the students as ttextbook users to read the passages. It was proven that the texts were readable and understood by the readers. However, they took time to understand the passages with more ellipsis and collocation. Hopefully, this study will give the readers and authors insight of the reading texts by using appropriate cohesive devices in creating coherent reading texts as instruments for teaching and learning.

Abstract

Online English teaching and learning during the pandemic is challenging for teachers and students. One of the problems encountered by teachers is maintaining students’ involvement in class discussions. To maintain students’ involvement, it is important to implement strategies that meet students’ needs. This study aims at describing students’ objective and subjective needs in learning English. This study was descriptive qualitative in nature. It was conducted at SD Daniel Creative School, Semarang. 184 students and 6 English teachers were involved in this study. This study used a questionnaire, classroom observation sheet, and interview as the instruments. The result revealed that for objective needs, many students still needed help in mastering some areas, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. For subjective needs, many students had low self-confidence and self-esteem in learning English. In addition, the students also mentioned their expectations of teachers’ teaching strategies. The observation showed that the strategies implemented by the teachers were effective to fulfill students’ needs and to encourage their involvement in class discussions. Unfortunately, the teachers did not implement all the strategies consistently to fulfill students’ needs. As the result, students’ involvement was still low. Thus, this study implies a suggestion for English teachers of the school and English teachers, in general, to consistently implement teaching strategies that meet students’ needs to encourage students’ involvement.

Abstract

This study was aimed to discover the types of processes used Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) to study the relationship between Visual, Lingual, and Written text, and how they influence the authors to analyze of Artificial Intelligence Video’ Alexandr Wang speech in TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) talks YouTube channel. Artificial intelligence is a set of sciences, theories, and techniques whose purpose is to reproduce by a machine the cognitive abilities of a human being. Machine-based systems can give a set of human-defined objectives and make predictions, recommendations, or decisions that influence real or virtual environments. AI systems interact with us and act on our environment directly or indirectly. Often, they appear to operate autonomously and can adapt their behavior by learning about the context, (UNICEF 2021: 16). AI systems are algorithmic models that carry out cognitive or perceptual functions in the world that were previously reserved for thinking, judging, and reasoning human beings. (Leslie et al. 2021: 8). MDA is a term that is used to refer to the way people communicate using different modes at the same time (Kress & van Leeuwen, 1996), which is defined as the use of several semiotic methods in product design, or semiotic events simultaneously, and in a certain way these modes combined with strengthening, compliment, or be in a certain arrangement (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001).
