Abstract

This study explores the representation of gender and power in Japanese television advertisements through the lens of Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), while highlighting its educational significance as a resource for media literacy. Advertisements, as a key part of popular media, are powerful agents in shaping public perceptions and cultural norms. Especially among students, who increasingly consume media content in their daily lives. The analysis of selected advertisements aired between 2020 and 2024 reveals a recurring pattern of gender stereotyping: men are typically portrayed as assertive, dominant decision-makers, while women are depicted in passive, supportive, or domestic roles. These portrayals are reinforced through both visual elements and linguistic choices that reflect deep-rooted ideological structures. From an educational perspective, such media texts offer valuable opportunities to teach students critical literacy skills, enabling them to deconstruct messages, question assumptions, and reflect on issues of gender equity and representation. Integrating media discourse analysis into classroom practice supports the development of socially aware learners who can engage with media thoughtfully and responsibly. The study underscores the importance of media literacy as a transformative tool in promoting critical thinking and fostering a more equitable understanding of gender in contemporary society.

Abstract

Critical reading skills, namely the ability to understand, analyze, and evaluate information in depth, are fundamental competencies in learning Indonesian. The low mastery of these skills is the background to the need for the implementation of effective learning models. This study focuses on the study of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) learning model integrated with the Close Reading Technique as an alternative to improve students' critical reading skills. An important stage in this approach is combining the teamwork structure of the CIRC model, which hones reading and writing skills in an integrated manner, with the in-depth analysis process of the Close Reading Technique. This technique encourages students to examine the text repeatedly to reveal the structure, choice of diction, and ideas contained therein. The results of the study show that the synergy between these two approaches creates a systematic and in-depth learning process. It is concluded that the application of the CIRC model with the Close Reading Technique is a strategic alternative that has been proven to be implemented effectively to significantly improve students' critical reading skills in learning Indonesian.

Abstract

This paper examines the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) technology with the Blended Learning (BL) model in the teaching of Pangangge Tengenan, a component of the grammatical structure in Balinese script. The study addresses challenges such as students’ low interest and limited comprehension of symbolic and abstract material, as well as the constraints of conventional media in visualizing the forms and functions of pangangge concretely. Employing a library research method, this study reviews various relevant sources to formulate the conceptual foundation, implementation strategies, and pedagogical implications of integrating AR and BL in culturally based learning. The findings suggest that AR facilitates understanding through interactive three-dimensional visual representations, while blended learning offers flexibility in time, access, and collaborative interaction between teachers and learners. The instructional syntax developed combines online and offline learning stages, with AR utilized during visualization and symbolic practice phases. These findings demonstrate that the integration of AR and BL has significant potential to support culturally grounded grammatical instruction and contributes to the preservation of Balinese script through pedagogical strategies that are innovative, participatory, and contextually relevant.

Abstract

Bali is rich in natural beauty and culture, one of which is Balinese music. Balinese music with local themes is often overlooked by the public, even though it has deep meaning and specific objectives from the creator. Researchers are interested in conducting a critical discourse analysis of the lyrics of the Balinese song “Taksu Bali” by Harmonia feat Gus Teja using Teun A. Van Dijk's theory. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method, involving reading, analyzing, and classifying the lyrics of the song “Taksu Bali” by Harmonia feat. Gus Teja using Teun A. Van Dijk's approach. The results obtained from this study are that the macro-level structural elements of the song's topic are the cultural identity crisis of Bali in the era of modernization. The superstructure contains schematic elements such as introduction, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, refrain, bridge, modulation, ending, and coda. The macro-level structure includes setting, performance, implied meaning, word choice, and metaphor usage. The results of critical discourse analysis help reveal implied messages that may not be noticed by listeners, thereby increasing critical awareness of popular cultural content. This research can serve as an important reference for researchers and cultural practitioners in exploring the hidden social and political meanings in traditional and modern musical works.
