Abstract

Introduction: Caries risk assessment is an effort performed to determine the causes of dental caries and the caries risk of the children. The purpose of the study was to determine the caries risk of pre-school children and the possible preventive home-treatment in reducing the risk. Methods: This research was descriptive with sampling method used was the total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Irene’s Donuts caries risk form to determine the caries risk and preventive treatment of the children. Caries risk assessment data was presented in the form of frequency distribution tables. Results: The first-year research resulted as follows: distribution of caries risk frequency based on the interview conducted towards the parents in Ulul Azmi and Amanah Kindergarten, regarding their education, age, children’s habits, showed that the highest risk (88.9%) in both kindergartens was found in children who still drink milk with pacifier bottles until more than four-years-old. The second highest risk amongst Ulul Azmi Kindergarten students (88.9%) was found in children with daily candy consumption; the highest risk amongst Arroyyan Kindergarten (90%) was tooth decay which considered not interfering the children’s development with the pH level below 6.5. Regarding the treatment choice of the students, the most choices taken amongst Ulul Azmi Kindergarten parents were helping their children brush their teeth at night before bedtime; assuring the children’s sufficient water consumption in Amanah Kindergarten parents; assuring the children’s vegetable and fruits contained menu in Arroyyan Kindergarten parents. Conclusion: The highest caries risk of pre-school children is tooth decay, with the possible preventive home-treatment, were helping the children to brush their teeth at night before bedtime, assuring the children’s sufficient water consumption, and assuring the children’s vegetable and fruits contained menu.

Abstract

Introduction: The impact of oral health on quality of life of pregnant woman can be measured with the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP 14). OHIP 14 is a measuring instrument that measures the functional limitations, physical pain, psychological discomfort, physical disability, psychological disorders, social disorder and disability. validity and reliability of a questionnaire is needed to measure the impact of dental health. The objectives of this study was to get the data validity and OHIP14 questionnaire reliability in pregnant woman. Methods: The research material that OHIP questionnaire 14 that has been adapted to the language and culture of Indonesia. Analysis of the questionnaire on the validity and reliability used correlation test. Research conducted by accidental sampling. Population study was pregnant woman who went to the beauty clinic in Banjaran District of Bandung. Sample study was pregnant woman. The inclusion criteria of sample is in good general state of health, exclusion criteria that do not have a systemic disorder. Result: Validity OHIP14 is the value of R calculated in the range from 0.495 to 0.647, r value calculated in 95% confidence level is 0.374 and in 99% confidence level is 0.474. The coefficient of reliability of 14 item instrument is 0.944. Conclusion: 14 OHIP questionnaire given to pregnant woman to be stated is valid and reliable.

Abstract

Introduction: Indonesia has a lot of different languages, customs, and food. Each ethnic has a distinctive food of each such Minang ethnic happy with spicy foods and coconut milk, while Sundanese pleased with foods that are sweet and dry. The purpose of this study was to determine the status of oral hygiene ethnic group Minang and Sundanese. Methods: This research use descriptive research. The method used in the study are the type of total sampling method. Samples will be selected according to the criteria of the indigenous people the Minang ethnic and Sundanese ethnic who live in the village Pangalengan district as many as 33 people Minang ethnic and 66 people Sundanese ethnic as a control. Results: Results showed a p-value of oral hygiene status in Minang ethnic communities and Sundanese ethnic communities in Pangalengan is 0.261. Oral hygiene status in Minang ethnic communities in the district Pangalengan are in the medium category with the numbers 2.7, while the Sundanese people are in the medium category with the numbers 2.4. Conclusion: The conclusions of this study is there is no difference of oral hygiene status between Minang ethnic and Sundanese ethnic in Pangalengan age of 26-45 years.

Abstract

Introduction: The need of dental care is defined as a collection of dental and oral treatment in which according to dental personnel should be obtained by a certain period in order to achieve good dental health status. According to WHO, the productive age is the age group between 35-44 and is considered as the standard age for checking the adult oral health condition. The objective of this research was to obtain the necessity of oral health data at productive age in Cilayung village. Method: The research method was descriptive with cluster sampling technique. Samples of 80 respondents were obtained by pathfinder surveys technique. The necessity of dental care was assessed using WHO oral health surveys and the dental condition of respondents were checked using mouth glass. Result: The results shows that the highest number of caries prevention is as many as 80 people (100%) and the need for one surface treatment as many as 75 people (93.75%). Conclusion: The research concluded that the people in Cilayung village is in high need of caries and surface treatment.

Abstract

Introduction: Essentials oil of lime (Citrus aurantifolia) peel has high activity in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The objective of this research was to determine the formulation of mouth rinse from the essential oils of lime (C. aurantifolia) with the highest inhibitory and on the growth of S. mutans. Methods: This research was an experimental in-vitro study. The sample used was the lime (C. aurantifolia) peel waste peel using hydrodistillation technique; testing of the essential oil quality was performed using 100°C distilled water for 3 hours; organoleptic test and physical mouth rinse formula test was also conducted. Mouth rinse formulations were made from the essential oils in the concentrations of 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, and 20%. Mouth rinse activity was tested with optical density. Minimum inhibitory concentration was determined with microdilution. Results: Essential oil mouth rinse formulation showed antibacterial activity at the concentrations of 2, 4, 8, 10, and 20% (formulations I-IV); the recommended mouth rinse concentration was 4% (formulation III) due to its highest antibacterial. Formulation IV showed the highest minimum inhibitory concentration value of 5.2 mg/mL (0.52%) and the safe minimum bactericidal concentration of 0.4 mg/mL (1.04). Conclusion: Mouth rinse formulation from essential oils of lime (C. aurantifolia) peel begins to show inhibition of the growth of S. mutans bacteria at the concentration of 2% essential oils (formulation II), with inhibition against the growth of S. mutans is 7.08. The formula shows a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 5.2 mg/mL (0.52%) and 10.4 mg/mL (1.04), respectively.

Abstract

Introduction: Malocclusion has an impact on the quality of life, thus becoming the motivation for orthodontic treatment. Subjective and objective needs for orthodontic treatment vary, where subjective needs are sometimes higher or maybe lower than objective needs, vice versa. The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) is an index used to see the level of treatment needs. This study was aimed to analyse the correlation of orthodontic treatment motivation and the level of treatment needs based on the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN) of orthodontic patients. Methods: The research was correlation analytical. The motivation for orthodontic treatment was assessed using a questionnaire consisted of aspects of oral health motivation, oral function, aesthetics, psychosocial, and influence from others. The level of orthodontic treatment needs was assessed using the IOTN dental health component. Results: It was found that the patients’ motivation related to aesthetics was high. The motivation to get orthodontic treatment due to oral health, oral function, and psychosocial conditions was moderate, while related to the influence of others was low. The level of need for grade 4 treatment shows the largest percentage (48.57%). Gamma correlation analysis between motivation variables related to the oral and psychosocial function with the level of treatment needs showed a significantly positive correlation with the p-values of 0.003 and 0.022, categorized as weak correlation. Conclusion: There is a weak correlation of orthodontic treatment motivation and the level of treatment needs based on the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN) of orthodontic patients.

Abstract

Introduction: The pregnancy condition leads to few changes in women’s bodies, such as hormonal, physiological, and diet. These changes also manifest in dental and oral health. Hormonal changes affect the susceptibility of oral mucosal tissue, whereas emotional and dietary changes alter the pattern of dietary intake, dental cleaning, oral hygiene, and nutritional status. The purpose of this study was to discover the profile of oral manifestations, oral hygiene, and nutritional status in pregnant women. Methods: The population of the study was the pregnant women who visited the Garuda Community Health Centre in Bandung. Subjects were pregnant women aged 17-43 years old. The samples must meet the inclusion criteria of good health status, and the exclusion criteria were no systemic abnormalities, and not currently under long-term antibiotic therapy. The research design was a cross-sectional observation. Indicators measured in this survey were the profiles of oral manifestations, oral hygiene status which assessed using OHI-S, and nutritional status of pregnant women using haemoglobin (Hb) and Body Mass Index (BMI) level. Results: Oral manifestations found in pregnant women were tongue disorders and ulceration, with the coated tongue as the most frequently detected manifestation, and the least found was recurrent aphthous stomatitis, whereas the oral hygiene of pregnant women was categorised as good in the 1st and 2nd-trimester of pregnancy. However, it was found to be moderate in the 3rd trimester. In respect of the Hb level, the nutritional status of the pregnant women was averagely good. By contrast, the BMI score revealed that pregnant women was found of having overweight during the 2nd and 3rd trimester. Conclusion: The most frequently found oral manifestation in pregnant women is coated tongue, while the oral hygiene is categorised as good on the first two trimesters, and the nutritional status in the last two trimesters is considered as overweight.Keywords: Oral manifestation, oral hygiene, nutritional status.

Abstract

Introduction: During pregnancy, hormonal changes can increase susceptibility to oral diseases. Oral disease can pose a risk for the baby's oral health and pregnancy outcomes. Oral problems and their complications during pregnancy can be prevented by maintaining oral health behaviours that include knowledge, attitude, and practice. This study was aimed to analyse the correlation of knowledge and attitude pregnant women toward their oral health practice. Methods: An analytic research with a cross-sectional method was conducted towards 65 pregnant women at Sukajadi Community Health Centre (Puskesmas), Bandung, taken as a sample through purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire. The statistical test used in this study was the Spearman correlation test. Results: The study showed that 66.2% of pregnant women had good knowledge of oral health care, 27.7% had adequate knowledge, and 6.2% had poor knowledge. Oral health care attitude found that 56.9% of pregnant women had a good attitude, 43.1% had a fair attitude, and none were in the poor category. Oral health care practice of pregnant women resulted from 15.4% was in a good category, 60.0% in the fair category and 24.6% was in the poor category. The statistical analysis results between the attitude and the practice of oral health care showed a weak correlation with the correlation coefficient (rs) 0.124 and a significance value (p-value) was higher than 0.05 (0.325), indicating that there was no significant relationship between attitudes and the practice of oral health care. Conclusion: There is weak correlation between knowledge and attitude of pregnant women toward their oral health practice.

Abstract

Introduction: Most of the mentally retarded children may not brush their tooth correctly. They need parents or caregivers to help and supervise the tooth brushing process to reduce the accumulation of dental plaque which may lead to oral diseases. This research was aimed to analyse the most effective toothbrush between parents’ toothbrush and regular toothbrush on children with mental retardation. Methods: This research was quasi-experimental with the blind method. Twenty-nine students with mental retardation consisted of boys and girls of YPLB Cipaganti Special Needs School-C (SLB-C) were selected with total sampling. Each individual was divided randomly and being given the parents’ toothbrush and regular toothbrush. Parents were responsible for brushing their children’s teeth during the period of the study. Plaque scoring was performed on the seventh day. The wash-out period was initiated after the seventh day for one week. Each group was given a different toothbrush from their first toothbrush, and the plaque scoring was performed on the first and seventh day. Plaque scoring was assessed using the Greene Vermillion Index. The data obtained were tested with the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: An average difference of plaque index before and after using parents’ toothbrush was 0.3, and the average difference of plaque index before and after using a regular toothbrush was 0.4. There was no significant difference in plaque index changes between these two toothbrushes (p-value > 0.05). Conclusion: Two types of toothbrushes, which are parents’ toothbrush and regular toothbrush are able to reduce plaque.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Dental caries is still the most common oral disease experienced in Indonesia. Caries is caused by various factors. Practices in maintaining proper oral health are urgently needed to maintain healthy teeth and mouth to avoid various diseases, including caries. Caries prevention is inseparable from the role of protective factors that maintain the caries balance. This study was aimed at discovering the level of oral health maintenance practices, caries protective factors, as well as caries experience in adults in Sekeloa Region. Methods: The research method was descriptive cross-sectional with purposive sampling technique. The sample consisted of 61 permanent residents aged 35-44 years in South Sekeloa. Data was collected through questionnaire and DMF-T index examination. The questionnaire consisted of questions asking about respondent’s biodata, practices of oral health maintenance and caries protective factors. Questions of the questionnaire used in this study were adapted from several journals published by Cheng, Rahman, and Punitha13-15, then translated back and forth by the oathed translator and has been tested for validity and reliability using rank Spearman correlation. Analysis data using distribution frequency and categories using normal distribution curve. Results: This study shows that subjects performed good practices of oral health maintenance (47.54%), adequate (50.82%), bad (1.64%), and good caries protective factors (1.64%), adequate (52.46%), bad (45.90%). The caries experience degree reached 9.13 and was categorized as moderate. Conclusion: The oral health maintenance practices and caries protective factors in adults aged 35-44 years were adequate, and the degree of caries experience was moderate.
