Abstract

Introduction: Oral health education aims to enable an individual to maintain oral health, one of which is tooth brushing. Education media can determine its success. As the development of technology, audiovisual media is also developing. Audiovisual media are commonly used nowadays for educational purpose in many fields, and simulation media in many forms are often used for education. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of audiovisual media in the form of animated film and simulation media in the form of a dental model on toothbrushing skills. Methods: Quasi-experimental that tend to comparative analytics was conducted with the sample that was taken by purposive sampling technique. Forty students of Ciganitri 2 State Elementary School (SDN Ciganitri 2) aged 12-year old participated in this study. The students were divided into two groups; the first group received an education with an animated film, and the second group received an education with dental models. Measurement of the students’ toothbrushing skills performed with pre-test and post-test. All data calculated by independent t-test in each group. Results: The film group and the study model group intervention have equal effectiveness. The paired t-test between the two groups resulted in no significant difference between the effectiveness of audiovisual media and simulation media on the students’ toothbrushing skills. Conclusion: Audiovisual media and simulation media group intervention effectively improve toothbrushing skills. Keywords: Audiovisual media, simulation media, toothbrushing skill.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by abnormalities in social interaction, limited interests, and repetitive habits. ASD children have motor, sensory, and communication limitations and difficulties that affect daily activities, namely brushing teeth, therefore education is needed to improve the tooth brushing behavior of ASD children. Education can use the Mobile Dentistry Game Application, namely Pokémon Smile which is one application that can be used to help increase knowledge and education of children with ASD in brushing teeth. The purpose of the study was to analyze improvement  in the tooth brushing behavior of children with ASD using the mobile dentistry game application. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with 16 children was conducted in November 2024. The study consisted of measuring tooth brushing behavior before using Pokémon Smile, followed by using the game and measuring tooth brushing behavior after using the game. Results: There was a significant change with a p-value (p<0.05) 0.004. The average score of children's tooth brushing behavior before the use of Pokémon Smile was 5.25 with most behavior levels being very poor and after the use 6.86 with most behavior levels being moderate. There was an increase in the mean score of tooth brushing behavior by 17.05, reflecting a change in the level of tooth brushing behavior of ASD children from the poor category to moderate. Conclusion: Tooth brushing behavior of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using a mobile dentistry game application has improved. This improvement is reflected in positive behavioral changes observed after using the application. Abstract

Introduction: In Indonesia, the prevalence of oral health issues remains high, reaching 63.4% in West Java. Differences exist between regions, with Bandung Regency at 64.67% and Bandung City at 47.88%. These regional disparities, influenced by social determinants such as access to care, socioeconomic status, and health literacy, contribute to unequal outcomes. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable due to physiological and hormonal changes, with poor oral health increasing the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, and preeclampsia. Community health centers (puskesmas), as primary care facilities emphasizing promotive and preventive services, employ the Oral Health Scoring (OHS) method to assess both felt and normative needs. This study analyzes the differences of oral health scoring among pregnant women at two basic emergency obstetric and neonatal services centers. Methods: A cross-sectional, comparative analytical quantitative design was used. The subjects were pregnant women attending the two puskesmas, selected by accidental sampling. Oral health status was assessed using the OHS method. Data were analyzed with an independent t-test to compare groups. Results: A total of 100 pregnant women participated, mostly aged 26–35 years. Half reported discomfort (50%) and nearly half were dissatisfied with appearance (48%), though most had no eating difficulties (67%). Normative findings showed 85% of the women had 1–8 decayed teeth, 54% of them had enamel erosion, and 19% of them had inflammation/ulceration. Significant differences were found in caries (p=0.020), erosion (p=0.005), and inflammation/ulceration (p=0.010), but not in occlusion. Overall, 75% of the women were categorized as healthy, with no significant difference between centers (p=0.253). Conclusion: There are differences in the examination of caries, wear, and inflammation among pregnant women. There are no differences found on OHS category results in two basic emergency obstetric and neonatal services centers
