Abstract

Many fields of study, including literary studies, pay a serious attention on the connection between violence and trauma. Responding to such an attention, this article aims to investigate some issues of violence and post-traumatic stress disorder represented in the novel Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. The writing is based on library research. This descriptive-qualitative study applies psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud to analyze the representation of violence and post-traumatic stress disorder in the novel. The findings show that Kent, through Burial Rites, illustrates that the impacts of violence on someone can be both physical and psychological. Kent demonstrates a relationship between violence and post-traumatic stress disorder in the story. It depicts that the violence a person has experienced in life, whether physical or psychological, can cause a mental disorder called post-traumatic stress disorder. The illness can make the sufferers regularly experience fear, nightmares, anxiety, and other things that disturb their mind and soul.

Abstract

This research studies rural life as the setting in Mark Twain’s masterpiece, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This research investigates rural life employed by Mark Twain as the setting in the novel. Besides, it highlights the kinds of rural settings intertwined in the story. Finally, this research also investigates how far the settings function to deliver the theme of the novel. In analyzing the work, the study applies a formalist approach that focuses on the text’s intrinsic elements, in this case, the settings. It also utilizes the qualitative method and library research as the method of the study. Finally, it is found that the settings of place are the most dominant setting that carries the novel’s rural aspect compared to the time and social settings. Mississippi River and the villages as the settings of place also play an essential role in delivering one of the story’s themes, the conflict between natural life and civilized life.

Abstract

This research explores the role of the body in the Irish literary work, Normal People. Written by renowned Irish author Sally Rooney, the novel narrates how contemporary Irish society experiences shifts in its social structure. It delves into the lives of young Irish characters as they navigate social and political upheaval in relation to the Western culture that serves as their cultural axis. This culture is, in part, represented through the colonized form of the body. Rooney elevates this concept to emphasize her political stance that the body has become a manifesto in the ideological struggle against the encroaching Western influences. By employing Lucien Goldmann’s theoretical framework, this article demonstrates the intersection of the body and alcohol, connecting the historical memory of the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland. Moreover, the article contends that the United States of America has colonized the bodies of the Republic of Ireland’s society through the consumer patterns of popular culture introduced in television advertisements. Keywords – Alcohol, Colonization, Political Beliefs, Popular Culture, Television Commercials.

Abstract

Metaphorical language innovation, which originates from thought processes and interactions between fellow language speakers and with the natural surroundings, leads to various configurations of lingual forms. Therefore, this study investigated the linguistic innovations to create metaphorical expression, its role in decorating text, and the effect of globalization on metaphor in daily life. The data for this study were metaphorical languages in daily life, social and online media. This research applied a qualitative approach and the concept and theory of metaphor. The data were collected using participant and non-participatory observation methods. The data were analyzed using the Intra-Lingual Referential Method and the Extra-Lingual Referential Method or the Distributional and Referential Method, using the techniques of relating and comparing the elements of language related to metaphor as the research object. The results of data analysis showed that the analogy of target and source domain gives rise to simple and complex metaphors. Metaphors have an essential role in building the beauty of a text. Metaphors decorate a text and stimulate the reader's imagination when reading literary works. Besides, globalization distributes, enriches, and colors the metaphors in a language

Abstract

Intangible heritage, such as folklore, plays a crucial role in preserving cultural values and traditions. Regular efforts are needed to ensure these stories, and their embedded values are passed down through generations. Many ways can be conducted, including socialization and implementation of character education values. This article aims to socialize and implement the character education values contained in folklore. This community service program is an attempt to preserve and pass down the character education values contained in the legend "Malin Kundang," a well-known legend about a son's disobedience to his mother and cursed to be a stone, to many segments of people, especially youngsters in West Sumatra and its surroundings. Unversitas Andalas lecturers and students in Sumatra Barat, Sumatra Selatan, Bengkulu, and Riau conducted the program. We collected data regarding people's knowledge of "Malin Kundang," its educational values, and the methods of sustaining the values for the next generation. The results show that 65 out of 79 (82%) respondents understand the legend "Malin Kundang." Sixty-seven (85%) respondents agree that religious, moral, and social values such as courtesy, respect for others, obedience to parents, hard work, abstinence, and remembrance of origin are values to be passed on to others. While 'Malin Kundang' is widely known, continuous efforts are needed to instill its values in the younger generation. Utilizing modern techniques such as IT and media can enhance the preservation and dissemination of these cultural values.
