Abstract

Code mixing usage can easily be found in everyday use for public communication, both in formal and non-formal contexts. In this millennial era, code mixing is commonly found in social media, particularly in YouTube. In Indonesia, the video creators or usually called as YouTubers sometimes mix their languages, and the commonly mixed languages used are Indonesian and English. Considering the previously mentioned phenomena, this research focuses on analyzing and observing the code mixing on YouTube entitled Seleb English by Sacha Stevenson. The researchers applied qualitative method because the data of this study were described by looking at the reality that occurred in the form of oral language. What is more, the data were then analyzed and interpreted objectively in the forms of words and languages. The purposes of this study were to find out the types of code mixing, this was answered by using Muysken’s theory (2000) and in order to determine the reasons of using code mixing, Hoffmans’s theory (1991) was applied. Based on the result of this research, it is found that there are three types of code mixing such as insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. In addition, the researchers found that the reasons of using code mixing in Seleb English are talking about a particular topic, being emphatic about something (express solidarity), interjection, repetition used for clarification, and expressing group identity. Therefore, code mixing as a language phenomenon is not only found in real life, but also in digital context.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis thesis discusses about personality of a character named Teresa in a novel entitled The Death Cure by James Dashner by using one of Sigmund Freud's personality theory of id, ego, superego. The researcher uses a qualitative methodology and a psychological approach in this thesis. Furthermore, the theory of factors influencing human personality by Abraham Lahey is also applied to this thesis. The result of this study indicates that the representation of Teresa's personality is grouped into two phases based on the plot of this novel. In the first phase, Teresa has id and ego, however, she does not have the superego. Her id is very strong. Therefore, Teresa’s personality is dominated by the id which makes her ego neglected due to the absence of superego. In the second phase, Teresa has the three of personality structures (id, ego, superego) and those work each other. Moreover, Teresa's personality which is grouped into two phases, the first phase is before memory restoration, and the second phase is after memory restoration, is influenced by external factors or it is known as nurture. Nurture influences Teresa's personality in both phases by identifying at the physical environment and the social environment that is around and experienced by Teresa.

Abstract

‘The Great Expectations’ in the Victorian era was written where technology advancement began to emerge during the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain. This study was aimed at finding out about the setting of time and place in the novel and the society’s life in novel at the Industrial Revolution Period in the novel. Using qualitative content analysis, results of the study show that the setting of time and place reveal that the main characters and the minor characters interactively communicate with one another describing how a big dream of a young boy is finally fulfilled. Life style of living in a big city like London made the main character forget who he was and where he comes from leading him to a misery of losing all his assets and wealth due to his own life style. Literary sociology describes the technology advancement as well as the differences among the rich and the poor in Britain during the Industrial Revolution that has turned agriculture-oriented period into the fast-moving machinery period making people richer and poorer. Conclusions reveal that a big dream can turn into a reality, but luxury should not blind a person from being appreciative to others and that the Industrial Revolution has created new classes in society dividing people up into newly formed new strata. Key words: The Great Expectations, British Society, the Industrial Revolution, a big dream, Victorian Era.  ABSTRAK       'The Great Expectations' di era Victoria ditulis di mana kemajuan teknologi mulai muncul selama Revolusi Industri di Inggris Raya. Abstract

Background: English literacy skills play a vital role in students’ academic and social development. Yet, many junior high school students still struggle with reading and writing due to limited vocabulary and exposure. Objective: This community service program, titled “Don’t Worry, English is Easy,” aimed to strengthen the English literacy skills—particularly reading and writing—of seventh-grade students at SMPN 7 Loa Kulu, Kutai Kartanegara Regency. Methods: The program was conducted by lecturers and students from the Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Mulawarman. The implementation involved observation, documentation, and literacy-based training using contextual materials such as “Introducing Myself,” “My Family,” and “My School.” Results: The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties with spelling and constructing English sentences. Common spelling errors were caused by phonetic interference and limited understanding of English orthography. External factors such as family background, lack of learning facilities, and minimal English exposure outside the classroom also contributed to these challenges. However, students showed increased motivation, confidence, and active participation throughout the training sessions. Conclusion: The program effectively enhanced students’ enthusiasm and engagement in learning English. It is recommended that similar community service programs be implemented continuously through collaboration between universities and schools to strengthen students’ English proficiency holistically.
