Abstract

Macrozoobenthos has an important role in ecological functions in mangrove ecosystems which can be used as bioindicators in aquatic ecosystems. The purpose of this study was to inventory macrozoobenthos, water quality and substrate found at the study site. The method used in this study was the observation transect method of mangrove vegetation measuring 10 x 10 meters in which 5 sub-plots were made in the plot where each sub-plot measuring 1 x 1 meter. Macrozoobenthos samples were taken from the substrate, stems and roots of mangroves. Measurements of water quality parameters were taken in situ at each research station and the substrate was taken using a shovel and then observed for sediment particles in the Dumai Maritime and Fisheries Polytechnic laboratory. This study succeeded in infentarizing the macrozoobenthos of the Mollusc Phylum, class Gastropods with 6 families and 6 species (Nerita articulata, Chicoreus capucinus, Littorina scabra, Ellobium aurisjudae, Cerithidae quoyii and Pugilina cochlidium) and class Bivalvia, 1 family and 1 species (Polymesoda bengalensis). Water quality parameter values consist of an average temperature of 29.73 ˚C, a salinity of 26.33 ppt, dissolved oxygen (DO) 4.92 mg/l and a pH of 6.9. This water quality condition can still be tolerated by mangrove and macrozoobenthos plants. Substrate texture at stations 1 and 2 includes the clay loam category and station 3 the sandy loam category which has an influence on the abundance of macrozoobenthos.

Abstract

There is still minimum information on the condition of the mangrove ecosystem, such as canopy cover and vulnerability of the ecosystem. Therefore, it was necessary to analyze that by assessing the Important Value Index (INP), canopy cover and vulnerability to degradation. The primary data needed are the type, density, frequency and basal area of mangroves obtained by the Transect Line Plot (TLP) method. The canopy cover was obtained using the Hemispherical Photography method. The data analyzed using INP, pixel analysis with binary images and compared to standard criteria of mangrove damage and vulnerability to degradation of mangrove ecosystems. This study identified 5 types of mangroves, Avicennia alba, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Xylocarpus granatum and Sonneratia alba. Xylocarpus granatum was the species with the highest INP at stations 1 and 2, while at station 3 it was Avicennia alba. Station 1 has the highest canopy cover with a value of 86%. The condition of the mangrove ecosystem in Dumai is generally in the good category with medium stands. In addition, the level of vulnerability to mangrove degradation in can be categorized as low vulnerability. Although this research was conducted with simple methods and equipment, the results can provide an overall illustration of the condition of the Dumai’s mangrove ecosystem, making it easier for interested parties to manage the ecosystem.

Abstract

Title: The Octopus Fishery Management with an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) in North Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi ProvinceInformation regarding the management of octopus fisheries in Indonesia is still relatively limited. One of the regions in Indonesia with the potential for octopus fisheries is in North Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi Province. The objective of this research is to assess the socio-economic conditions of octopus fisheries and the management of octopus fisheries based on the EAFM indicators in the research location. The research was conducted in North Minahasa Regency, utilizing survey and direct observation methods. Data analysis was performed using descriptive analysis and evaluation based on EAFM indicators. The socio-economic conditions of octopus fishermen in the research area, as assessed by their average income, are IDR 2,920,654.29 per month in Bulutai Village and IDR 3,317,336.38 per month in Gangga Satu Village. The status of octopus fisheries management in the research area, based on the assessment using the EAFM indicators, received an aggregate composite score of 92, categorizing it as “very good.” The lowest score was in the economic domain, with a score of 67, categorized as “good.” Therefore, there is a need to improve the economic well-being of octopus fishermen in North Minahasa Regency. This is due to the fact that household asset ownership within the fishing community has not increased, the average income of fishermen is below the North Sulawesi Province’s 2023 Regional Minimum Wage of IDR 3,485,000.00 per month, and fishermen’s expenses are equal to their loan interest. Policy recommendations based on the research findings include improving the economic conditions of octopus fishermen by supporting marketing systems, starting with the establishment of standardized pricing and collaborating with the fishing industry. Furthermore, enhancing the capacity of fishermen in the use of fishing gear and adding value to octopus products are also recommended.
