Abstract

The logic of shape, number, and sequence is the subject of mathematics. We use mathematics in everything we do. Available everywhere. Everything we use every day—computers, software, hardware, art, money, engineering, sports, and even ancient and modern architecture is built around it. In the realm of number theory, mathematicians study various aspects of prime numbers, including the distribution of prime numbers, ordering patterns of prime numbers, and methods for generating prime numbers. Even the most ancient and rudimentary societies used mathematics, and since the beginning of history, mathematical discoveries have been made. at the forefront of every civilized civilization. This is simple but can be applied to many phenomena in everyday life, making an Ancient Greek mathematician from the Hellenestic era named Erastothenes successful in being the person who created an extraordinary discovery, namely, the Erastothenes Sieve. Therefore, the aim of this research is to provide encouragement to junior high school students to understand and be interested in studying mathematics, especially the Erastothenes measurement method and then apply it in everyday life. This type of research is qualitative research with a descriptive approach and literature review method. The instruments used in this research are tests, interviews and documentation. The results of this research show the level of students' understanding of the Sieve of Eratosthenes.

Abstract

This study examines Archimedes' contributions to the development of Greek mathematics after Euclid and its impact on the advancement of modern mathematics, as well as its implications for students. Although his contributions have been widely discussed, a deep understanding of the relevance of Archimedes' principles to modern mathematics is still limited. The purpose of this study is to analyze Archimedes' contributions and their implications across various fields of mathematics and their contemporary applications. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a literature review approach to understand Archimedes' contributions within the historical context and modern relevance. The instruments used are relevant scholarly literature, including books and journals. The literature review includes previous works that highlight Archimedes' contributions to mechanics and mathematics, particularly in areas such as geometry, calculus, and the understanding of volume and surface area. The data analysis technique applied is descriptive qualitative analysis to identify patterns and themes in Archimedes' contributions, such as his development of methods for calculating areas and volumes of geometric bodies, as well as his innovative work in fluid mechanics. The results of this study emphasize the importance of historical understanding of Archimedes' contributions to mathematics and their implications for students. This study encourages students to explore the historical roots of modern mathematical concepts, fostering a deeper appreciation for the evolution of mathematical thought. The implications and benefits of this study motivate students to develop critical thinking and innovative problem-solving skills, applying mathematical concepts in real-world contexts.

Abstract

Hindu mathematics has made foundational contributions to the development of modern arithmetic, particularly through the introduction of the decimal number system and the concept of zero. Despite its historical significance, this study found that students' awareness and understanding of Hindu mathematics remain limited. This research investigates the role of Hindu mathematics in shaping modern arithmetic and examines students’ knowledge of these contributions. The study employed a qualitative approach, combining a literature review to trace historical developments with student interviews to assess their conceptual understanding. Findings indicate a substantial gap in students’ historical awareness, with most attributing the origins of modern arithmetic solely to Western and Arabic traditions. This gap is attributed to curriculum content that underrepresents non-Western mathematical heritage and a lack of accessible instructional resources. The study underscores the need to integrate Hindu mathematical contributions more explicitly into mathematics education to foster a more comprehensive and culturally inclusive understanding of the discipline’s history.

Abstract

One of the research objectives was formulated to improve the quality of education, namely by understanding the problems of students and teachers. There were three main groups of quality characteristics of education highlighted in scientific and academic literature in Russia, namely the quality of educational objectives, the quality of the educational process, and the quality of educational outcomes. The problem of education in Indonesia is the quality of the education process. The development of teaching materials is an alternative to improve the quality of the education process. Research so far has only focused on the implementation of learning models by teachers in the classroom, but the model is not integrated into the teaching materials used. This paper examines how the effectiveness of a product that has been developed for two years on 27 Indonesian students. The product produced is a guided discovery-based module in the Complex Analysis subject. This product was developed after the preliminary analysis (defining) process. Students are given 16 modules during lectures; then students are given a final test containing all the competencies that must be achieved. Test results are scored, and statistical analyses are conducted to compare them with student score before using the module. The test used is t-test. The design used is one of the experimental research designs, One Shot Case Study. The results of the study showed that students who were taught with modules developed effectively to improve student learning outcomes. Further research can be done by implementing different learning models in teaching materials.

Abstract

PISA studies from 2000 to 2022 revealed that the achievements of Thailand’s students in mathematics were always better than those of Indonesian students. Thailand still uses the 2008 curriculum until now. Meanwhile, Indonesia already changed its curriculum three times during these periods, namely Curriculum 2006, Curriculum 2013, and Curriculum 2020. Based on this data, it is important to investigate the impact of the curriculum and its implementation on students’ mathematical literacy. This study aimed to investigate how students in Thailand performed better in mathematical literacy compared to their Indonesian counterparts within the context of mathematics curricula.  We compared the mathematics curricula of the two countries and analyzed the implementation of the curricula in mathematics learning. Document analysis, observations, and interviews were conducted. The results show that the curricula and how they are implemented in the two countries are not strikingly different. Three notable differences are students’ focus in the learning process, the preparation of learning admissions by teachers, and changes in the curriculum.
