Abstract

The cultural approach in learning mathematics connects abstract concepts with everyday life, helping students understand mathematics meaningfully. This study aims to explore the ethnomathematics of the Seleman Kerinci’s Larik Panjang house, identifying mathematical contexts in real-world applications. Using an ethnographic approach with qualitative research methods, data collection techniques included observation, documentation, and interviews. The primary data collection instrument was the researcher, supported by observation sheets, interview guidelines, and documentation. The study began with a literature review and geometric material analysis, followed by data reduction, data presentation, verification, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal mathematical elements in the house’s architecture, including: (1) plane figures such as triangles, rectangles, and rhombuses; (2) solid figures like octagonal prisms and rectangular beams; and (3) transformations involving reflection and rotation. These mathematical aspects demonstrate the integration of indigenous knowledge into architectural design. Ethnomathematics in traditional architecture is expected to serve as an engaging learning medium, making mathematics more relevant to students while preserving local wisdom as part of the nation’s cultural identity. This research contributes to the development of contextual mathematics education, highlighting the importance of cultural heritage in shaping mathematical understanding.

Abstract

Mathematical representation is an essential skill in the Merdeka Curriculum; however, assessment results indicate that this ability still needs improvement. The purpose of this study was to develop learning tools (Teaching Module, Student Worksheet (LKPD), and Learning Video) that can enhance students’ mathematical representation ability. This study applied the Plomp development model, which consists of three stages: preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment. The research subjects included experts for validation, three students with different ability levels for the one-to-one trial, six students for the small group trial, and one full class for the field test. Data were collected through interviews, observations, literature review, validation sheets, questionnaires, and interviews with both students and experts. Data analysis was carried out using quantitative techniques for validation and effectiveness, combined with qualitative interpretation and descriptive statistics. The results showed that the developed learning tools were declared valid by experts with validity scores of 4.10, 4.03, 4.11, 4.13, and 4.88, respectively. The tools were also highly practical, with practicality scores of 94.67% from teachers and 93.73% from students, and effective in improving mathematical representation skills with an average test mastery of 73%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that mathematics learning tools assisted by video using the SAVI model are valid, practical, and effective. The implication is that these findings contribute to the development of innovative mathematics learning that supports the enhancement of students’ mathematical representation skills.

Abstract

This study focuses on the professionalism of teachers, particularly in terms of their attitudes and beliefs toward the integration of digital technology in teaching and learning activities. Plotagon was selected as a medium for developing interactive and contextual 3D instructional videos. The research employed a survey method aimed at exploring teachers’ interest in and acceptance of Plotagon as a supportive tool for instructional materials. The participants comprised twenty-eight junior high school teachers in Sawahlunto City. Prior to the survey, the teachers received intensive training on creating instructional videos using Plotagon. Data were collected through direct observation, questionnaires, and structured interviews. The findings reveal that the majority of teachers (91%) demonstrated positive beliefs regarding the use of digital culture-based technology through Plotagon, while 88% considered the medium beneficial for students. Furthermore, 86% of teachers showed high levels of engagement, and an equal proportion actively participated throughout the implementation process. These results imply that integrating digital storytelling platforms such as Plotagon can enhance teachers’ professional competence and foster innovative teaching practices.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to develop a teaching module based on RME that is valid, practical, and effective for class VII SMP, with a focus on improving the ability to solve problems with mathematical students. We developed the modules by considering the local context and culture, adhering to RME measures, and emphasizing the use of relevant and conceivable situations for students. We utilized the Plomp development model, which encompasses the stages of investigation, creation, and evaluation. We tested the prototype and assessment of this teaching module on participants enrolled in class VII at SMP N 1 Ranah Batahan. The research results demonstrate that the developed teaching modules have high validity (89.33%), practicality (89.60%), and proven effectiveness, as evidenced by an average score of 85.50% among the test study students.  In addition to enhancing the mathematical skills of students, the RME approach also enhances the study of IPAS (Natural and Social Sciences). The development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills through this module enhances students' understanding of natural and social phenomena. Therefore, this teaching module not only promotes mathematical achievement but also fosters integrative and holistic learning within the framework of IPAS.

Abstract

Mathematical representation plays a pivotal role in students’ understanding, reasoning, and problem-solving processes. Despite its centrality in mathematics education, systematic approaches to assessing representational behavior remain limited, particularly within diverse cultural and curricular contexts. Existing assessment practices often emphasize cognitive outcomes, overlooking affective, psychomotor, and meta-representational dimensions that shape students’ mathematical understanding. Addressing this gap, the present study developed and validated an analytical rubric designed to assess mathematical representation behavior comprehensively across these four domains. Grounded in the Educational Design Research (EDR) framework, the rubric was constructed through four iterative stages—reflection, recording, grouping and naming, and application. Six mathematics education experts from Indonesia and Malaysia participated in the validation process, while empirical data were collected from 42 undergraduate students who had completed a geometry course. The analysis revealed strong content validity, with Aiken’s V coefficients ranging from 0.78 to 0.93 and full expert agreement, confirming the rubric’s clarity and relevance in evaluating representational behaviors. The rubric categorized student performance into three levels—Eikasia, Dianoia, and Intellectus—providing a nuanced diagnostic framework for assessing students’ mathematical representation. This study contributes to the field by introducing a cross-culturally grounded assessment tool that integrates cognitive, affective, psychomotor, and meta-representational perspectives. The findings highlight the rubric’s potential as both a formative and diagnostic instrument, enhancing the precision of assessment and offering insights for improving mathematics instruction and future digital-based evaluation practices.
