Abstract

This study is the result of a library research which is qualitative in nature on the greed for power and for food of the antagonist named Cole depicted in Jeanne DuPrau’s The City of Ember. Some definitions as well as concept about the antagonist and greed from the various sources are generated in chapter two to bring about the proper arguments and ideas related to the analysis of the topic. The method used in analyzing the data in this paper is Descriptive Qualitative Research in which it is a research method used to acquire and describe accurate, factual, and systematic data. The findings show that Cole, as a mayor in the city of Ember who is supposed to protect his citizens in the city of Ember, has misused his power to dupe his citizens. He convicingly says to the citizens that if they work hard and dedicate their life to the city of Ember, the city will be prosperous. In fact, he speaks so glibly to the citizens for the shake of his own interests that he will not need to work hard anymore to control the city. Mayor Cole is also a very greedy man. So greedy he is that he has ordered two of his trusted workers named Looper and Lizzie Bisco to steal the food supplies from the storeroom and hiden them in a tunnel pipeworks, called the room 351 to be enjoyed by himself. He has overabundance of food while the citizens of Ember are in a crisis of food. Furthermore, the finding of this study shows that Mayor Cole’s evil deeds is revealed by Doon and Lina in the long run.

Abstract

This study is concerned with the causes of anger. Anger a basic human emotion, as elemental as, gladness, sadness, anxiety or disgust. These emotions are tied to basic survival and are honed over the course of human history. Anger is related to the “fight, flight, or freeze” response of the sympathetic nervous system:  it prepares humans to fight. But fighting does not necessarily mean throwing punches; it might motivate communities to combat injustice by changing laws or enforcing new behavioral norms. This is the positive trait of anger though in many cases only the negative ones are seen. Everyone experiences anger at some point. It becomes problematic, however, when the frequency or severity of anger interferes with relationships, work performance, legal standing, or mental health. All these points are faced by the main characters of the novel. The whole research is done by means of descriptive qualitative research, exposing the social features, in this case anger. The research results show that there are causes of anger found through the study: past experience and lack of problem-solving ability. Owing to traumatic past experiences, one of the main characters does a kidnapping and on the second point, the inability of solving problems, makes another main character filled with anger.

Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing juvenile delinquency in Jay Asher’s novel, Thirteen Reasons Why, published in 2007. Further, the analysis is focused on the forms of juvenile delinquency covering bullying, drinking alcohol, having free sex, and having sexual harrasment done by the characters of the novel named Hannah Baker, Bryce Walker, Justin Foley, Alex Standall, Jessica Davis, Courtney Crimsen, Marcus Cooley, and Bryce Walker. This research is conducted to reveal the forms of juvenile delinquency conducted by the main characters in the novel. This study is qualitatively carried out.  In this study, the researchers apply the theory of juvenile delinquency proposed by Santrock, supported by that proposed by Kartono referring to  a variety of behavior of children and adolescents which the society does not approve and for which some kind of admonishment, punishment, or preventive and corrective measures are justified in the public interest. The research results show that the forms of juvenile delinquency: bullying, drinking alcohol, having free sex, and having sexual harassment are vividly reflected and clearly done by the main characters in the novel.

Abstract

This research is about the struggle of the first character named Ogino Ginko in reaching her dream to be a female doctor and help other women who have the same illness as she suffers in a novel, Beyond the Blossoming Fields, written by Watanabe Jun`ichi, published in 1970. This research is conducted by descriptive qualitative method, and one of the significant theories used in this research is proposed by Centeno (2014: 136) who claims that struggles are exactly what we need in our life. It means struggle is something crucial in our life. The finding of this research shows that the protagonist is successful in her struggle to be a doctor. She becomes the first female doctor in Japan, and after she opens a clinic, there are so many woman patients coming to her clinic, and most of them are contracted with the illness as she suffers. She also becomes the inspiration for other women in Japan to become woman doctors.

Abstract

This research was aimed at conducting analysis on self-confidence in Anthony McCarten’s movie script, Bohemian Rhapsody. The self-confidence was analysed by using the theory proposed by Lindenfield (1994) who states that self-confidence consists of self-confidence born and inner self-confidence. Self-confidence born allows someone to show confidence in what he will do. This confidence can make someone believe in himself to achieve what he wants. In confidence born, he claims that a person must develop skills such as communication, assertiveness and feeling control. Inner self-confidence is self-confidence that gives to the individual’s feelings and suppositions that the individual is in good condition. There are three main characteristics that are distinctive to people who have a healthy inner self-confidence. The three characteristics are self-love, self-understanding, and positive thinking. This research used descriptive qualitative method because the discussion was descriptively accomplished. The descriptive qualitative method was applied to explain the self-confidence to get success from the quotations in the movie script. The result result shows that self-confidence born and inner self-confidence vividly played important role to make the protagonist’s success come true.

Abstract

This research is aimed at analyzing the intimate language style used by the characters in The Notebook movie. In this research, the characteristics of the intimate language style used by the characters and the factors that influence these figures using intimate language styles in the movie would be revealed. The researchers apply a descriptive qualitative design. The research data are in the forms of film transcripts. The main theory used in this research is the theory proposed by Martin Joos. The results show that the researchers find 22 intimate language style utterances. In detail, the 22 intimate language style utterances include Addresse with 6 data, Extraction with 4 data, Jargon 3 data, Close relationship with 5 data, and Family relationship with 4 data. In addition, it is also found that there are four social factors that influence the characters to use intimate language styles. The first factor is the participants. The film's participants have very close relationships such as Family members or Close friends. The second factor is topic. The topics discussed in this film are privacy and love. The third factor is setting. Conversations in the film are often completed in several informal and private places such as beaches, houses and so on. The fourth factor is function. The speech functions produced by these characters vary; however, most of them have the same aim; that is to convey or show their intimacy to each other.

Abstract

This research is the result of qualitative research on the protagonist’s struggles named Katniss Everdeen depicted in Suzanne Collins’ novel The Hunger Games. Burleson (1964) says that struggle is one of ways to reach the better life in the future and also to increase the prestige. It means that any hope will be achieved through struggling. Katniss Everdeen is a strong as well as a resourceful sixteen-year-old girl who is far more mature than her age would suggest. Katniss is the main provider in her family, which consists of Katniss, her mother, and her younger sister, Prim Everdeen. She must struggle hard to make herself and her family stay life. Therefore she always keeps on struggling in her life. The finding of this research shows that the protagonist is succesful in her struggles to fulfill her family needs, to protect her sister and to win in the Hunger Games.

Abstract

This study is concerned with the causes of conflicts in Habiburrahman El Shirazy’s Novel Bumi Cinta which was published in 2019. The causes of conflicts derived from internal and external factors are the focus of the study. Through this study it is found that Ayyas can protect himself from the temptation that attacks his faith. He also surrenders himself to God so that he could be saved from all disturbances that come at any time to him. He is very angry with Linor who regards that his religion is a primitive one. The method used to analyze the causes of the conflict in this study is literary descriptive approach proposed in which it is shown that qualitative research methods are complex, changing and contested field site of multiple methodologies and research practices. The research results show that the main character faces internal as well as external conflicts in the forms of temptation and difference in perception.

Abstract

The research is concerned with types of love faced by Tara Dupont, the main character of the novel Autumn in Paris, written by Ilana Tan.  The types of love: friendship, infatuated love, romantic love and consummate love are the main focus of the study.  The objective is to find out how Tara Dupont implements the types of love in relationship with people around her. One of the theories used in the research is Robert Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love  which states that love has three components:  intimacy, passion and commitment  and these three components are to be applied to obtain or run real love.  Qualitative descriptive method is applied for the whole analysis.  The finding shows that types of love are found in the novel Autumn in Paris. Friendship appears in a relationship between Tara, Sebastien and Tatsuya. Romantic love and infatuated love are the dominant types of love and consummate love is the rarest.

Abstract

The research is focused on the styles of Javanese political leadership revealed in the novel Arok Dedes written by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The Javanese leadership style is a cultural heritage and deserves to be maintained and revitalized and to be adjusted to the changing of times. Javanese people live side by side in harmony with cultural norms and values  and lifestyle becomes an ethnic identity.  The objectives are to find styles and how the styles of Javanese political leadership are revealed in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s novel Arok Dedes. A theory of Javanese leadership style, with its slogan of 5Ms is used a base and the whole research is conducted by means of descriptive qualitative method revealing the individual personality. The results show that the 5Ms of style are found in the novel: 1) melek/awas (awareness), 2) melik (sense of ownership), 3) muluk (poverty solution, 4) melok (aspiration realization), and 5) meluk (accomodation), all of which are performed by a leader of Tumapel district, named Ken Arok.
