Abstract

Digital literacy capability is a must in the era of internet access, especially in the use of social media. All internet users, especially university students, must practice digital literacy. This study aims to found the common forms of university students' digital literacy behavior when using social media. This study uses a mixed-method approach as it consists of data search using a digital literacy scale, an open-ended questionnaire, and interviews with university students in Yogyakarta. The results of this study indicate that respondents with high digital literacy levels conduct a process of evaluating truthful information by checking trusted sources of information directly and discussing their findings with significant others. The likelihood and ability to evaluate information correctly is affected by family background, formal education, and negative hoax impact awareness. The study also found that after respondents perform across (double) checks, they will usually forward the information, also known as doing a repost. This research implies a description of digital literacy behavior carried out by students in Yogyakarta; with this study, digital literacy behavior expects to provide an overview of information technology policymakers.

Abstract

Interfaith marriage can be called a meeting of inter-social identities specifically within the context of family. It is therefore an indispensable part of the process for every interfaith marriage couple to de-categorize and re-categorize and consolidate their social identity as a couple so that they can successfully define their new family values. The purpose of this study is to analyze how married couples of different faiths in Toraja harmonize their differences from the perspective of social identity. This study used an ethnographic approach with six informant actors from three interfaith families in Toraja. The results show that these married couples operationalize a dual-hierarchical identity model in an inter-family harmonization effort. Tongkonan identity is placed vertically as a collective identity, while the identity of religion as a person-based social identity is placed horizontally. Both of these have consequences for the emergence of a cross-categorized identity.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the formation process of the closeness in interethnic friendship among adolescents living in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. A qualitative study using grounded theory method is employed. Study participants comprised five adolescent girls, aged 16–17 years, with the following interethnic friendships: Javanese–Arabic–Tionghoa, Javanese–Arabic, and Javanese–Tionghoa. Data on the formation process of closeness in interethnic friendship were collected using semi-structured interview referring to the Closeness Interethnic Friendship Guideline for Adolescents. Data were analyzed using initial coding, focused coding, axial coding, and theoretical coding. Results reveal seven composites of closeness in interethnic friendship: disclosure, comfort, compatibility, reappraisal of the characters and other ethnic groups, support, similarity, and togetherness. Closeness led to the continuity of friendship, along with positive emotions, such as excited, comfortable, fun, happy, joyful, content, safe, and proud. This process occurred when the situation supported togetherness as well as, personal quality, experience, and appraisal toward the different ethnic groups, and the shared values understood by all the ethnic groups.

Abstract

Online friendship is an inevitable phenomenon especially for young people for which Helmi et al. developed a concept and an online friendship scale with university students as their trial subject. From a  developmental perspective, university students are in the early adulthood stage. With the Internet’s asynchronous nature and the absence of non-verbal cues, the scale was applied to high school students in this present study. The purpose of this study was to test whether or not the online friendship scale has sound psychometric properties when applied to high school students. The subjects of this study were 214 high school students. The results of the structural equation model analysis met the goodness of fit criteria for construct validity, which include TL, GFT, and RMSEA indices. Its Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was also satisfying. A drive to create activities with friends on social media mitigates the lack of non-verbal signs resulting from online communication. This result supports the social enhancement hypothesis. Consequently, Online Friendship Scale can be implemented in adolescence and young adult.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to formulate a theory about Javanese adolescent self-concept in relation with friends. The subjects of this research were three Javanese adolescents, two girls and one boy. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation and were analyzed with the so-called grounded theory approach. The results of this study indicated that Javanese adolescents interprets himself as plural selves, hierarchical interdependent and altered. Individuals have a lot of selves that represent their relationships with others. The selves are composed with each other in a hierarchical relationship. In a particular time, an individual activates one only of their selves. The self-activation process goes with the principle of "if ..., then ...". After recognizing their friends and situations, individuals will compare and evaluate themselves then choosing and activating one particular self to adjust with a particular friend and situation. When Javanese adolescents are with their friends, they do not think much about physical aspect, they become themselves and feel equal, accepted, understood and trusted as a good person. Such self-viewing makes an individual tend to go through positive feelings and comfort being around friends. Keywords: self-concept, self-adjustment, adolescents, Javanese, friends
