Abstract

This study aimed to measure how significant is the effect of using the Word Search game as a pre-activity in improving the vocabulary mastery of fourth-grade students at SD Islam Mu’tashim Billah during the Academic Year 2023/2024. The research applied a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, using a total sampling technique that selected 15 students from the tenth grade as the research sample. Analysis of the pre- and post-test data using a t-test revealed a pre-test mean score of 37.66 and a post-test mean score of 84.66. The t-test result, indicating -12.89, was compared to the t-table value of 1.761% at a 0.05 significance level with 14 degrees of freedom (df). Based on the above data analysis, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted because the t-test was smaller than the t-table (-12.89<-1.761). Furthermore, the effect size of 3.43 indicated a very strong effect (0.8<). In conclusion, the use of the Word Search game as a pre-activity in teaching significantly influences students' vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of undergraduate English Language Education students on the utilization of smartphones for self-regulated learning and the acquisition of the English language. The study investigates the ways in which smartphones facilitate the learning of English language through self-directed techniques, using Zimmerman's model of self-regulation and the MALL framework as theoretical basis. An exploratory investigation including 110 students was conducted to analyze their experiences, perspectives, and practices in utilizing language learning applications. The findings indicate a range of levels of knowledge and usage, with students generally acknowledging that smartphones are valuable tools for improving language acquisition through self-regulation. Analysis based on Zimmerman's model yields high average scores (3.42-3.51) for forethought, performance, and reflection & evaluation, indicating students engage in self-regulated learning practices. According to the MALL framework analysis, task design and design characteristics, all received high ratings (ranging from 3.42 to 3.68). This indicates that the app features effectively promote self-regulated learning activities. This study emphasizes the crucial role that smartphones play in promoting self-regulated learning practices and enhancing the acquisition of the English language among university students

Abstract

This research aimed to discover moral values presented in the Encanto movie script based on Hartmann’s theory and to identify the most dominant moral value of each group. The research method was a qualitative descriptive study. The data source was from the Encanto movie script by Charise Castro Smith and Jared Bush. The SPEAKING model (setting and scene, participant, end, act of sequence, key, instrumental, norm, and genre) by Dell Hymes was used as the data analysis to analyze conversation in the Encanto movie script. The findings showed 16 data on moral values divided into three groups of moral values. The first group was wisdom, courage, and self-control. The second group was brotherly love, trust and faith. The third group was radiant virtue. Moral values in this research provided relevant implications for other researchers in analyzing moral values through literary works, especially movie scripts.

Abstract

An error analysis of EFL undergraduate student’ writing composition. This study has thoroughly investigated morpho-syntactic errors in the compositions of English Language Education undergraduates at Universitas Tanjungpura. Employing a descriptive methodology and drawing from Ellis (1994), the research analyzed 97 self-descriptive compositions. The findings reveal a significant prevalence of morpho-syntactic errors, totaling 793 syntactical and 333 morphological errors across an average of 18 sentences per composition. Syntax errors involve sentence patterns and subject-verb agreement, while morphological errors revolve around inflection and conversion challenges. Categorized into omissions, additions, misinformations, and misorderings using a surface strategy taxonomy, the errors provide insights into students' linguistic competence. The study advocates for targeted instructional interventions, integrated curriculum development, cross-linguistic awareness programs, and learner-centered approaches. Longitudinal studies and teacher training programs are recommended for a deeper understanding of error evolution and effective pedagogical implementation, contributing to the discourse on morpho-syntactic errors in EFL writing with practical implications for language instruction. Keywords: Error analysis, morpho-syntactic error, self-descriptive compositionDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i3.202331

Abstract

EFL Pre-Service Teachers’ Experiences in Implementing Differentiated Instruction during Teaching Practice Program.  This study explores the experiences of pre-service English teachers (PETs) in implementing Differentiated Instruction (DI) during their teaching practice in Indonesian junior and senior high schools. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from 17 PETs who had completed their teaching practice, focusing on how they differentiated content, process, product, and the learning environment to meet diverse student needs. The findings reveal that PETs employed strategies such as scaffolding, flexible grouping, and offering multiple forms of assessment to address the range of linguistic competencies and learning styles among students. However, they also faced challenges, including time management, balancing diverse needs, student resistance to flexible grouping, assessing different products, limited resources, and maintaining student engagement. Despite these obstacles, PETs viewed DI as a valuable approach that enhanced their teaching effectiveness, though they recognized the need for more training and resources to implement it successfully. This study provides insights into the challenges and benefits of DI in pre-service teacher education, particularly within Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum. The implications suggest that teacher education programs should integrate more extensive DI training to better equip future teachers for diverse classroom dynamics. Limitations include the small sample size and focus on a specific context, which may limit generalizability. Future research should explore DI across different regions and school settings with larger samples. Keywords: differentiated instruction, pre-service teachers, ELT, teaching practice.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202490

Abstract

The Environmental Observation Strategy is the approach that separating students into groups and having them observe a specific topic for 10-15 minutes before putting to their ideas. Afterward, groups merge their thoughts to create a descriptive paragraph. This research study aims to investigate the significant effectiveness of utilizing the Environmental Observation strategy in enhancing the writing skills of seventh-grade students in the descriptive text at SMPN 10 Pontianak. Employing a pre-experimental research design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach, the study selected a sample of 32 students through cluster sampling as the sampling technique. Data collection involved administering pre-tests and post-tests in descriptive writing assessments. Statistical analysis comprised t-tests and effect size calculations. The results unequivocally demonstrate the significant impact of the Environmental Observation Strategy on students' descriptive writing skills. The t-test analysis (8.244) surpassed the critical value (2.0395) with df = 31, indicating a strong effect (effect size = 1.428). These findings underscore the pivotal role of implementing the Environmental Observation Strategy to enhance descriptive writing skills, thereby warranting its recommendation for seventh-grade students. By providing students with opportunities to observe and engage with their environment, educators can foster a deeper understanding of descriptive language and encourage students to effectively communicate their observations and experiences through writing.
