Abstract

Students' low chemical literacy and scientific attitudes in understanding chemical concepts, particularly in green chemistry, pose significant challenges in chemistry education today. Traditional learning models are often less effective in fostering 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving, which are essential for a more relevant and applicable chemistry education. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a STEM integrated with Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on students' chemical literacy and scientific attitudes in green chemistry. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study involved two experimental classes and two control classes. Each group participated in pretests and posttests to assess their chemical literacy and scientific attitudes. The analysis revealed that the PBL-STEM model significantly enhanced students' chemical literacy (N-Gain = 0.54) and scientific attitudes (N-Gain = 0.46) compared to traditional learning methods. Although the improvement in scientific attitudes was more pronounced, the increase in chemical literacy was relatively lower, indicating the necessity for adjustments in instructional approaches to deepen students' understanding of chemical concepts. The integration of green chemistry principles within the PBL-STEM model effectively connected chemistry education with global environmental challenges while also fostering 21st-century skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. This study concludes that the PBL-STEM model presents a promising alternative for enhancing the quality of chemistry education and preparing students to navigate the complexities of an ever-evolving world.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' learning interests in the application of the 5E cycle model to chemical equilibrium material at SMA Negeri 1 Seyegan. The research design used in this study was pre-experimental with a one-shot case study. The research sample consisted of all class X MIPA 1 students, with a total of 27 students. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Data collection techniques are carried out with an eye toward measuring student learning interest. The type of data analysis used is descriptive, calculating the proportion of the overall score at the level of interest in learning. The result of the study is that the level of interest in studying at SMA Negeri 1 Seyegan is in the moderate-high category.

Abstract

This research aims to create an instrument that can measure students' learning independence by measuring the level of validity and reliability. The instrument is a questionnaire for student learning independence consisting of 41 statements (20 positive statements and 21 negative statements) with responses based on a Likert scale score of 1 to 5. The research location for the empirical test of learning independence was at SMAN 1 Kalasan class XII MIPA in 3 classes. The number of empirical trial participants was 99 students. The results of the empirical test of the learning independence questionnaire instrument were then analyzed using the Winstep Rasch model program. The quality of the instrument can be determined from the unidimensional assumption test, the suitability test of the statement items to the Rasch model (item fit), and the bias of the statement items with the help of the Winstep program. The results obtained were that in the validity calculation there was 1 invalid statement out of 41 existing statements, namely the statement "I try to study as best as possible to achieve good performance" on the responsibility indicator. The reliability of the learning independence questionnaire instrument regarding the use of electronic modules is 0.93 and is in the very high category, so it can be concluded that the other 40 statements are declared valid and variable so that they can be used as instruments in measuring learning independence regarding the use of electronic modules.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze significant differences in problem-solving ability and learning motivation simultaneously between experimental class students and control class students; problem-solving ability between experimental class students and control class students; learning motivation between experimental class students and control class students; analyze the effective contribution of learning using PBL-STEM to students' problem-solving ability and learning motivation simultaneously; analyze the effective contribution of learning using PBL-STEM to students' problem-solving ability; analyze the effective contribution of learning using the PBL-STEM model to students' problem-solving motivation. This study uses a quasi-experimental model with a posttest only design. The sample of this study consisted of two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class, by random sampling. The experimental class uses learning with PBL-STEM, while the control class uses learning with a scientific approach. Data collection on problem-solving ability was obtained from descriptive test data and learning motivation data through a questionnaire. The MANOVA test was used to analyze the differences in problem-solving ability and learning motivation of experimental and control class students simultaneously. The between subject effect test was used to analyze the differences in each dependent variable in the experimental class and the control class. The partial eta square test was used to analyze the effective contribution of PBL-STEM to the dependent variable. The results showed that there were differences in problem-solving ability and learning motivation simultaneously between students in the experimental group and the control group; there were significant differences in problem-solving ability between students in the experimental group and the control group; there were significant differences in learning motivation between students in the experimental group and the control group; the effective contribution of using PBL-STEM to problem-solving ability and learning motivation simultaneously was 24.6% (high); the effective contribution of using PBL-STEM to problem-solving ability was 19% (high); the effective contribution of using PBL-STEM to learning motivation was 15.7% (high).

Abstract

This study is a bibliometric research aimed at discussing the development of research on Ethno-Project-Based Learning (Ethno-PjBL) in chemistry education from 2017 to 2024. This study utilised the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) approach with data extracted from Google Scholar using the Publish or Perish (PoP) software. A total of 23 relevant articles were analysed using VOSviewer to identify the highest number of publications, authors with the most publications, research trends, and opportunities for further research. The results of the study indicate that interest in Ethno-PjBL research during 2017 to 2024 showed stable but limited growth, as it experienced both increases and decreases. The highest number of publications occurred in 2021 and 2024, with five publications each. The author with the most publications was Sudarmin from Semarang State University with 7 documents. Ethno-PjBL research focused on several themes, such as ethnochemistry, ethno-STEM, creative thinking skills, development, and teaching materials. The visualisation results show that Ethno-PjBL research focuses on the integration of local culture in project-based chemistry learning. Meanwhile, new topics such as "natural products" and "Ethno-STEM approach" have great potential for further research.
